Let’s talk about “Trash Island,” or the Pacific Garbage Patch • The Great Pacific garbage patch, also described as the Pacific trash vortex, is a gyre of marine debris particles in the central North Pacific Ocean. It is located roughly from 135°W to 155°W and 35°N to 42°N. The collection of plastic and floating trash originates from the Pacific Rim, including countries in Asia, North America, and South America. • An ocean current about 6,000 miles long, referred to as the Subtropical Convergence Zone, connects the two patches, which extend over an indeterminate area of the widely varying range, depending on the degree of plastic concentration used to define the affected area. • It is estimated that 1.15 to 2.41 million tons of plastic are entering the ocean each year from rivers. More than half of this plastic is less dense than the water, meaning that it will not sink once it encounters the sea. • Despite the common public perception of the patch existing as giant islands of floating garbage, its low density (4 particles per cubic meter) prevents detection by satellite imagery, or even by casual boaters or divers in the area. This is because the patch is a widely dispersed area consisting primarily of suspended fingernail-sized or smaller bits of plastic, often microscopic, particles in the upper water column known as microplastics. • Research indicates that the patch is rapidly accumulating. A similar patch of floating plastic debris is found in the Atlantic Ocean, called the North Atlantic garbage patch. • Do your part to recycle today to stop the growth of the garbage patch! É meio misterioso, afirmou Melvin, professor assistente do Departamento de Ciências Biomédicas do campus de Duluth da Faculdade de Medicina. O pesquisador ressaltou que, de acordo com o Centro de Controle e Prevenção de Doenças dos EUA, não há evidências de que banhistas possam se infectar através da água nas praias, mas ele acredita que a recente descoberta abriu caminho para responder mais perguntas. A new enzyme ‘cocktail’ could help tackle plastic waste and recycling issues.⁠ ⁠ A team of scientists at the University of Portsmouth in England have developed a new “super enzyme” that can break down plastics up to six times faster than standard enzymes, according to a new research paper published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. ⁠ This combination of enzymes can speed up the decomposition process for the most common thermoplastic, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is used in single-use bottles, carpets, and clothing. One of the biggest ways you can help protect the oceans is by reducing your use of plastic. Most plastics are made for one time or short time use but they last forever in some form or another. . We know it’s easy to think that you are only one person and therefore you can’t make a difference... But remember, everything that ever happened in human history happened because one person either decided to do or not do something. It’s the domino effect, my friends. If you make a difference in your life that inspires someone else to make a positive change in their daily life and so forth, one person can make a huge difference. . Reduce, reuse, recycle goes in that order. First and most importantly, REDUCE. Reduce your overall use in general. Secondly, with what plastic you still acquire, REUSE it! There are plenty of ways to reuse many packages and containers. Third, RECYCLE. Remember, there is a right way and a wrong way to recycle. Take the time and care to simply look up your local recycling information to ensure that the effort that you are making is actually being put to good use. . I did a thing yesterday. It wasn’t fun, and I wish it wasn’t something I felt compelled to do, but I did. I went to the beach and picked up trash. Tiny bits of trash. The kind that’s easy to over look, but can still do major damage to birds and sea life. • No one told me to do this. I wanted to do it. Cause every time I’m at the beach I see trash. All. The. Time. It’s never ending. It’s disgusting. And this stuff doesn’t belong in nature. Any bird could mistake any of this trash as food. And why let that happen if it could be avoided? • I love going out in nature. Whether it’s the beach, or hiking. But I don’t enjoy seeing trash while I’m there... I filled this bag in about 30 minutes and in less than a mile. That’s just what I could find/see that wasn’t probably buried... Bottle caps, wrappers, finishing lines, plastics, and mostly cigarette butts. • It saddens me to see this. It makes me angry to know people purposely leave trash on the beach like it’s no big deal. It is a big deal! Cause if you don’t pick up you’re own trash then who will!? Then the trash continues to add up, it’s never ending! • I felt good about filling up this bag. It’s not a lot compared to how much trash really is scattered about our planet. But even the smallest amount picked up is worth it. And it’s worth it to any animal that may have tried to eat it. • The next time you’re outside and come across trash, don’t leave it. Even though it’s not yours it’s still a duty of ours to help our planet when we can. We won’t be able to stop inconsiderate people from leaving trash, but we can try to make things a little better by picking it up. It’s our home too. • I challenge you to the next time you’re out in nature to bring a bag with you, and a glove. Fill it up. You’ll feel good about it, I promise. Un cumulo di rifiuti lasciato a bordo strada, buste e vecchi oggetti lasciati in balia delle intemperie. In particolare una busta attrae l’attenzione di un ragazzo ed il proprio cane. Una busta dal contenuto raccapricciante. Il corpo, ormai senza vita, di un cane. E allora? Vi chiederete voi. E allora noi siamo disgustati, schifati, arrabbiati e tanto tanto delusi. Ogni giorno cerchiamo di sensibilizzare le persone al rispetto per la vita altrui, anche per quelle considerate, da molte persone, inferiori. Il corpo di quel cane è l’ennesima conferma di quanto la specie umana sia tossica, nociva e corrosiva per questo pianeta. Si parla tanto di evoluzione, di progresso. Ma capite che il progresso non è solo quello tecnologico. Il progresso lo si evince dall’accrescimento morale e intellettuale da parte di una determinata specie. E noi stiamo miseramente fallendo. Anzi, questa volta preferiamo dissociarci. Nessun “noi”. Perché azioni di questo tipo non ci appartengono. La vita di quel cane non valeva meno di quella di un bambino. No, non è utopia. Il corpo di quel cane, crudelmente morto, ha subito un ulteriore abuso venendo chiuso, con tanto di corda spessa, in una busta, da parte di chi di umano ha solo le sembianze. Gli animali uccidono per istinto, gli animali AGISCONO per istinto. Non hanno colpe, è la natura a guidarli. L’essere umano è una specie senziente, l’essere umano non ha giustificazione per la sua spietatezza, cattiveria, invidia e crudeltà così viscerali e incastonate nel proprio animo. La vita è una sola, la vita non puoi comprarla, la vita non è una creazione umana. È qualcosa al di sopra, di intoccabile e di intaccabile. E se tu “uomo”, osi sottrarla ad un altro essere vivente, qualunque esso sia, fallirai nel tuo essere “uomo”, nel tuo essere specie senziente e pensante. Sarai la sconfitta per l’umanità intera. I took Stopplastics challenge to pick up plastic beverage bottles and caps and look what I found! It was shocking how little time it took to collect 2 bags full of plastic bottles...they are everywhere. I picked these up in central Etobicoke in my local playground and it’s parking lot in no time at all. Why are we buying water in plastic bottles and why are we just tossing them wherever? Clearly this is an issue that needs to be addressed. Toronto city council please ban plastic beverage bottles...recycling is not the answer! None of these items are recyclable.⁠ ⁠ Yet beyond these essential items, the modern plastics industry has been taking advantage of the pandemic to further increase its profits, strategically planting unfounded fears and exploiting concerns over surface transmission to encourage greater consumption of all single-use plastic items. Compartimos una reflexión escrita por @camiprudente, voluntaria de @org.conservacioncetaceos: ⠀ SEA IN PLASTIC IS NOT FANTASTIC!⠀ ⠀ “No tiro basura en la playa”, “la basura siempre la tiro dentro de un contenedor”, “cuando voy a la playa, si no hay un contenedor, me llevo la basura conmigo”.⠀ ⠀ He escuchado muchas opiniones de diferentes personas. Pero si todos hacemos las cosas bien con la basura que generamos, ¿por qué la mayoría de nuestra basura termina en los océanos? ¿Cómo llega verdaderamente la basura al mar?⠀ ⠀ Mucha gente seguramente se hace estas preguntas y más, en especial esa gente que sí trata de cuidar el medio ambiente.⠀ ⠀ Hay muchas formas en que esos plásticos llegan al océano:⠀ ⠀ Gente que tira basura en la calle, personas que viven en situación de calle y revuelven los contenedores en busca de comida, tirando todos los residuos para la vereda, el perro del vecindario que también está en busca de algo para comer y rompe toda la bolsa que dejaste fuera del contenedor.⠀ ⠀ Los buques cargueros de diferentes países que les es más fácil tirar la basura en el mar. En la pesca, las llamadas “redes fantasmas” (redes de miles de kilómetros) son abandonadas por los pescadores. Las tortugas, focas, lobos y leones marinos, entre otros, terminan llevándose lo peor de todo esto. En la mayoría de los casos, termina causándoles la muerte.⠀ ⠀ Como podemos ver, hay varias formas de contaminar, pero todas terminan en un solo responsable, y ese es el HOMBRE.⠀ ⠀ Actualmente podemos encontrar plásticos en todos los océanos del mundo. El 80% de los residuos plásticos que hoy contaminan provienen de la tierra, de nuestros hogares, de la no clasificación de residuos para reciclado y de los desechos deliberadamente vertidos en el mar en forma directa.⠀ ⠀ Esos papeles, bolsas, y demás elementos que vemos por la calle a diario, terminan en una cañada, esa cañada desemboca en un río y ese río/s desemboca en el mar. Great @npr article about the truth we have been sold about plastic recycling. Putting a plastic bottle in the recycling bin has been advertised to make us feel like although we consume a harmful product we are doing the most to offset environmental damage, but that’s just not true. Once freed from the rocks the seal was pup-sat by us then taken by British Divers Marine Life Rescue down to RSPCA - Mallydams Wood to be checked over and recuperate as it is rather underweight and has a few grazes. Unfortunately it was too windy to SUP to Enoshima today so instead I cleaned the beach with @kugezo99 Later we met @mk575 and @sdgs_shonan on the Hikichi River sandbar! What the actual 🦆? Our coastlines should be considered a hazardous waste zone! Seriously, Look at it! Its estimated that 8 million tonnes of this plastic waste enters our oceans every year. With about 80% of it originating from land-based sources. Ok this REALLY sucks, BUT heres what you can do about it: ✽ Always bag your trash because it could blow out at any given point once your bin is collected. ✽ Switch to reusable products such as resealable silicone snap bags, metal straws, glass containers, bring your own utensils when eating out and carry them in your car at all times in case you need them. ✽ Make a conscious effort to buy products that have as little, or no packaging as possible. ✽ Ditch the “It’s not my trash” mentality and 🦆ing pick it up! Tomorrow (Saturday September 19th) is #worldcleanupday! World Cleanup Day is an annual social action to address the issue of solid waste and marine waste globally. It is estimated that 8 million tonnes of plastic enter our oceans every year. And this year, we have increased amounts of single use PPE that are already making their way into waterways. This is overwhelming, but we can do something about it. Wherever you are, you can take action. If you feel safe to go outside, you can participate in a beach or trail cleanup. It doesn’t have to be in a group, I am planning on picking up litter as I walk my dog. If it is not safe to be outside where you are located, due to air quality advisories, you can participate in a digital cleanup. Did you know that the internet accounts for approximately 3.7% of GHG emissions? To participate in a digital cleanup, spend time deleting unnecessary files, which will extend the life of your devices, and help reduce the carbon footprint of the internet. DIY makeup wipes! 🙌🏽 by @lowtoxcreations 💃🏼⁠ ⁠ Low waste, chemical free, cheap and effective makeup wipes you can make at home! 🌟⁠ ⁠ What you’ll need:⁠ - Fractionated coconut oil⁠ - Reusable makeup pads (I use @ecosophist)⁠ - Witchazel⁠ - A jar⁠ - Water⁠ - Lemon, Peppermint, Tea tree, Purification and eucalyptus EO - for their properties, you don’t have to add them all⁠ ⁠ Add your reusable makeup wipes into a glass jar⁠ In a bowl mix 2 table spoons of coconut oil, 1 squirt of witchhazel, water and the oils of your choice - I did 3 drops of each (I chose the ones above as they are antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral etc)⁠ ⁠ Add the mixture to your jar and top with water. Once you use wipes just put them in the wash and add them back into your jar - it should last you a while before you have to replace the mixture.⁠ ⁠ This is a super cheap (much cheaper than the cost of using disposable ones over time) and easy DIY and has next to no waste 🙌🏽⁠ ⁠ What do you think?
