Yesterday we wrapped up the last of our guided paddle/beach clean ups and presentations on the presence of Microplastics in Lake Huron with Ocean Bridge @oceanwise Students at @campceltic. Grateful to Camp Celtic for these experiences and for these students doing the work of cleaning up our shorelines. In the passage of a few years since starting this observation based work, the problem is evidently only getting much worse. Imagine the volumes we dish out to the lake through our laundry detritus annually, or what is left behind by thousands of seasonal visitors or even our reaction to the current pandemic. What problem do we solve in trying to protect ourselves by trashing the vital source that supports our health and home? Navigating solutions to these problems may seem not possible. But water works in mysterious ways and shapes us all. It is clear the formula and education of treating the water as resource and utility hasn’t benefited the living lake. Although what we clean up today will be twice littered tomorrow, the potential for healthy water -and vibrant ecosystems of the lake- will find passage into the future through those who experience the water and its residents as living relatives. Treating the lake as a resource doesn’t require us to understand it or nurture it when it isn’t well. This song was taught to me by dear friends and it assures me the future for the lake is strong, when I hear them sing it. As chuvadas dos últimos dias puseram em evidência algo que já se esperava: podemos agora encontrar no lixo marinho peças da época, como máscaras e luvas descartáveis. Havia muito outro plástico descartável, copos de todo o tipo incluindo os pequenos que vários cafés servem à porta, muito sacos transparentes e toalhitas de limpeza. E claro cotonetes e beatas. Tudo isto é transportado nas abundantes águas pluviais que se juntam aos esgotos e descarregado no meio aquático, acabando aos nossos pés nas praias. Good news! A team of scientists from Northwestern University in Illinois (US) have found a way to break down the bonds that make polyethylene. Polyethylene is one of the most common types of plastic. We find it many household products like plastic bags, bottles, etc. The process cuts the plastic polymer turning it into liquid oil. It does that through a catalytic technique using metal nanoparticles to chop the polymer apart. This liquid oil can then be used for other purposes, like lubricant, and scientists are looking into other potential uses. The strong bonds that make polyethylene are what makes plastic so durable. It is why plastic never degrades. Un grupo de investigadores que estudia el efecto de la ketamina en las ovejas puede haber descubierto la razón por la que la gente cae en un estado parecido a la muerte conocido como el agujero K (K-hole en inglés).⁠ ⁠ Un equipo de científicos de la Universidad de Cambridge estuvo midiendo las ondas cerebrales de animales sedados como parte de un estudio que pretendía entender el efecto de las drogas terapéuticas en pacientes que sufren la enfermedad de Huntington, una condición en la que las células nerviosas del cerebro se desgastan, provocando complicaciones motoras, cognitivas y psiquiátricas.⁠ ⁠ En la primera y la segunda fase del experimento, los investigadores administraron 12 mg/kg de ketamina a un grupo de ovejas y estudiaron su actividad cerebral mientras estaban anestesiadas y mientras el efecto de la droga desaparecía gradualmente. En la tercera fase, los investigadores monitorizaron la actividad cerebral de seis de las doce ovejas tras ser administradas una sola dosis de ketamina de 24 mg/kg.⁠ ⁠ Lo que descubrieron fue que las ovejas mostraban una actividad de las ondas cerebrales “inusual” al salir de la sedación —que probablemente se corresponde con los efectos alucinatorios y disociativos de la ketamina— mientras que las ondas cerebrales de las ovejas que recibieron las dosis más intensas parecían haber parado durante varios minutos —un parón que los investigadores creen que podría explicar la experiencia del agujero K—.⁠ ⁠ La ketamina se utiliza comúnmente como analgésico en humanos y animales en entornos clínicos. Pero en los últimos 60 años, también se ha vuelto popular como droga recreativa por los mismos efectos disociativos y psicodélicos que se observaron en el estudio de Cambridge.⁠ ⁠ Como cabía esperar, la actividad cerebral de las ovejas tenía una baja frecuencia mientras dormían. International Plastic Bag Free Day Today is International Plastic Bag Free Day and is an annual observance held on the 3rd of July. It’s a global initiative, placing an important spotlight on either eliminating or rapidly reducing one’s dependency on single-use plastic bags. Furthermore, it is about making society aware of the over-consumption of plastic bags as well as disposable products, working towards developing more responsible and more environmentally friendly habits. It promotes environmental conservation as it encourages people to reject plastic bags. All over the worlds group hold events to place a spotlight on the threats plastic bags pose for marine and land ecosystems, and prohibit the production and distribution of single-use plastic bags, to decrease the use of plastic bags and what the alternatives to single-use plastic bags are. Single-use plastic bags are usually used only one time and has become a symbol of a consumer society. Not only that but these bags are usually found on the coast and in the ocean, which means that it has dire consequences on the marine environment. It’s also responsible, coupled with other litter items, for the deaths of about 100,000 marine mammals every year. Thankfully over the last couple of years, there has been a considerable growth in raising awareness internationally. As part of this, many countries have already banned plastic bags. On this day retailers are encouraged to not supply plastic shopping bags and consumers are encouraged to not use plastic shopping bags. Instead, reusable bags are promoted. I WAS WRONG - You can recycle blister packets! Did you know this? It turns out Terracycle recycle the plastic packets that contain medicinal tablets - with drop-off locations across the UK. Recycling is a minefield. As we know, so much of the plastic recycling we put into our council bins doesnt end up getting recycled with some of it dumped in South East Asia - not ideal... Ive cut down my plastic so dramatically I barely use any at all - but one area of my life Ive struggled to do this is healthcare. This is where Terracycle comes in. Once youve dropped off your empty blister packets, the plastic is separated by polymer type and extruded into plastic pellets to be repurposed. Great! *The bad news bit.....* Currently there are only 13 drop off centres for blister packet, our closest is in Stockport with other UK participating pharmacies in Newcastle, Stamford, Wellingborough, Great Yarmouth, Tiverton, Falmouth, Brighton, London & Belfast. 👊🏼A limpeza de praia da Cruz Quebrada, no Concelho de Oeiras, foi um sucesso! Não temos palavras para agradecer a todos os 32 voluntários, cheios de motivação e energia, que se juntaram a esta iniciativa do Movimento Claro Oeiras, promovida pela Oceano Azul Foundation no âmbito da comemoração do Dia Internacional da Limpeza Costeira!🌎 Graças a todos foi possível a recolha e encaminhamento de todo este lixo: ❌30,1 kg de resíduos de plástico; ❌3,5 kg de vidro; ❌88,25 kg de resíduos indiferenciados; ❌100 gr de palhinhas e paus de chupa chupa; ❌1 kg de tampas de garrafas; ❌1 pneu de trator; ❌1 kg de paus de cotonetes!!! Este valor é realmente incrível (vejam a foto!); LIXO COVID 19: -4 máscaras; -2 luvas descartáveis; Retirámos assim cerca de 133 kg de lixo da praia! É incrível a quantidade de lixo que uma praia de pequena dimensão pode conter! As marés fortes dos últimos dias deixaram a praia cheia de resíduos mas todo este lixo é produto da atividade humana! A quantidade absurda de COTONETES encontrados diz-nos que ainda há muitas pessoas a deitarem os cotonetes na sanita por desinformação e descuido! Mañana queremos hablar con distintas empresas para que nos cedan elementos y aparatos de limpieza y así colaborar los almerienses para tener su ciudad limpia y cuidada ya que parece que nadie lo hace. Esta claro y siempre lo decimos que el ser humano mancha y ensucia mucho, pero por eso hay que tener un equipo de limpieza para dar soluciones a tantos problemas. Aprovechamos para hacer ese llamamiento a ferreterías, viveros, etc etc para que nos donen equipos de limpieza como escobas, bolsas, guantes, recogedores, semillas para plantar plantas y arboles en tantos parques abandonados como el boticario donde posiblemente comenzaremos etc etc ... A social distanced covid cleanup! Stopplastics did a trial run cleanup following all of the rules in these times of the corona virus. There were three of us...we each brought our own supplies, we distanced while walking and we cleaned up a mess of plastic waste. The cleanup took place in south Etobicoke along lakeshore blvd. and some side streets. It was blazing hot so our pace was slow. Nonetheless we managed to pick up a lot of stuff in the short time we were out there...lots of water bottles, candy wrappers, cigarette butts,plastic gloves and of course plastic bags. I am a member of StopPlasticstoronto but I also belong to a local walking group so I decided to incorporate the two! When walking in local parks and ravines I carry my grabbers and a bag and cleanup what I can. This mess was the result of only four walks and I could have picked up much, much more but my bag filled quickly. And then it hit me...I cannot take responsibility for all of this plastic waste. 28મુ અઠવાડિયું શિયળાની ઋતુ પુર્ણ થઈ રહી છે અને વસંત ઋતુ આપના આંગણે આવી છે. આ ઋતુમાં ઝાડ અને વનસ્પતિ પર નવા પાંદળા અને ફૂલ ખીલી રહ્યા છે. એક સુંદર અને સ્વચ્છ ફૂલ રૂપી સંકલ્પ આપણે આપના મનમાં પણ વસાવીએ કે આપણે આપની આસપાસ સ્વચ્છ અને સ્વસ્થ વાતાવરણનું નિર્માળ કરીએ. અને હાં, આ ફૂલ આપતું છોડ મુરજાઈ ના જાય એ માટે સમય-સમય પર પાણી આપવાનું ભૂલસો નહીં. પહેલું સુખ તે જાતે નર્યા આ ગાંધીજીનું વાક્ય એટ્લે યાદ આવ્યું કેમકે આજે અમે લગભગ બધી કચરાપેટી સંપૂર્ણપણે ભરાઈ ગયેલ છે તે જોયું. તો કચરો હવે તેની બહાર આવી રહ્યો છે. તો તે પણ સાફ કરવા થોડું કર્યા કર્યું. કચરાપેટીને સમયસર સાફ કરવા અમે યોગ્ય તંત્રને નમ્ર વિનંતી કરીએ છીએ.એક મોટી વાત પર ધ્યાન આપવા જેવુ છે કે અમે, વન વિભાગ, માંડવી અને ગીર ફાઉંડેશન ના આર્થિક સહયોગથી રાખેલ 8 કચરા પેટી કદાચ પૂરી નથી પડતી.ફરવા આવતા પર્યટકો સાથે વાત કરી એક જ વાત સામે આવે છે કે વધુ થી વધુ કચરા પેટી ની જરૂર જણાઈ. માંડવીના બીચ નો વિકાશ થયો છે ત્યારે અહી ઓછામાં ઓછી 25 જેટલી કચરા પેટી ની જરૂર છે. જેમાં અમને તમારા સહયોગની જરૂર છે. પ્રકૃતિમાથી પ્રદૂષણ ઓછું થાય તેમજ બીચ પરથી પ્લાસ્ટિક સાફ કરીને દરિયાઈ જીવસૃષ્ટિ ને લાભ થાય તે માટે નો અમારો આ પ્રયાસ છે. અમે આ કાર્ય વિના મૂલ્યે અને પોતાની ઇચ્છાથી કરીએ છીએ.આપણે શા માટે પ્રકૃતિ ને સાફ રાખવી જોઈએ તથા દરિયાઇ જીવશ્રુષ્ટિ ના મહત્વ જેવા વિષયો પર અમે શૈક્ષણિક સત્રો(educational sessions) પણ રાખીએ છીએ. એક નોંધનીય બાબત એ છે કે બીચ પરથી પ્લાસ્ટિક સાફ કર્યા પછી અમે તે બધું પાલિકા દ્વારા પૂરા પાડવામાં આવેલ ડસ્ટબિનમાં ફેંકી દીધું હતું. આ સફાઈ જુંબેશ ના માધ્યમ થી અમે પર્યટકો ને વિનંતી કરીએ છીએ કે તમને નજીકમાં ડસ્ટબિન ન મળે તો તમે પ્લાસ્ટિકનો કચરો તમારી સાથે બેગમાં મુકો અને જ્યારે તમને ડસ્ટબિન મળે ત્યારે ફેંકી દો. જ્યાં સુધી આપણે આપણી આસપાસના પર્યાવરણનું સાનમાં નહીં કરીએ અને તેની સાર-સંભાળ નહીં રાખીએ આસપાસનાનું સન્માન નહી રાખો અને તેને સાફ નહી રાખો ત્યાં સુધી આપણું રાષ્ટ્ર સમૃદ્ધ નહીં થાય. અમારી પોસ્ટ્સ શેર કરીને અને તમારા સ્થાનો પર આ પ્રકારની ઝુંબેશ ચલાવીને પોતાનું યોગદાન આપી શકે છે .. !! સ્વયંસેવકો અને સભ્યોનો આભાર Kunal Kapta Vinod Maheswari Dharmik Bhatt Milan Mehta Hiren Gadhavi Arjan Gadhavi Yashesh Shah Mihir Shah #NoPlasticWaste #noplastic #cleanupchallenge #cleanindia #ourkutch #naturelover #environment #cleanbeach #beachcleaning #beach #mandvi #beachcleanup #securenature #swachbharat #savetheearth #saveocean - @securenature on Instagram

Esse é o saldo do feriado de 7 de setembro na Praia Grande, em Ubatuba, no litoral norte de São Paulo. Além do grande número de visitantes, uma imensa quantidade de lixo foi deixada nas praias. Did you know 94% of plastics in the ocean are not visible because they sit below the ocean surface? Plastics such as HDPE, LDPE and PP have a density less than seawater, allowing them to float. On the other hand, single use plastics (PET, PVC, PS and PLA) have a higher density than seawater causing them to sink. Over time, algae and marine life attach to the floating plastics, causing them to sink into the depths of the ocean. I took Stopplastics challenge to pick up plastic beverage bottles and caps and look what I found! It was shocking how little time it took to collect 2 bags full of plastic bottles...they are everywhere. I picked these up in central Etobicoke in my local playground and it’s parking lot in no time at all. Why are we buying water in plastic bottles and why are we just tossing them wherever? Many Sydney and Central Coast-based volunteers headed out to clean up Tower Beach, Collins Beach, Malabar Beach, and many more! It was a monumental effort from the ocean lovers on our NSW coastline. ⁠ ⁠ The AUSMAP team also headed out to sample #microplastics on both Collins Beach and Tower Beach. Paper or plastic? Try neither! NJ is serious about the growing waste crisis, banning plastic bags, straws, foam containers and even paper bags from stores and restaurants. The bill was just passed by state legislature and is now headed to the governor, where it will become law 18 months after its signed. Paper bags require more energy and greenhouse gas emissions to produce compared to plastic bags. Scientists have created a new super enzyme that can break down plastic up to six times faster than their previous enzyme. A team of researchers that previously re-engineered a plastic-eating enzyme named PETase have now combined it with a second enzyme to speed up the process, according to the University of Portsmouth. The super enzyme could have major implications for recycling polyethylene terephthalate, or PET, which is the most common thermoplastic used in single-use drink bottles, carpets, and clothing. A new enzyme ‘cocktail’ could help tackle plastic waste and recycling issues.⁠ ⁠ A team of scientists at the University of Portsmouth in England have developed a new “super enzyme” that can break down plastics up to six times faster than standard enzymes, according to a new research paper published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. ⁠ This combination of enzymes can speed up the decomposition process for the most common thermoplastic, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is used in single-use bottles, carpets, and clothing.
