A social distanced covid cleanup! Stopplastics did a trial run cleanup following all of the rules in these times of the corona virus. There were three of us...we each brought our own supplies, we distanced while walking and we cleaned up a mess of plastic waste. The cleanup took place in south Etobicoke along lakeshore blvd. and some side streets. It was blazing hot so our pace was slow. Nonetheless we managed to pick up a lot of stuff in the short time we were out there...lots of water bottles, candy wrappers, cigarette butts,plastic gloves and of course plastic bags. Cause you know, karma....I cannot tell you how angry, disappointed and sad I feel! As most of you saw my post on Saturday that a group of us, 15 volunteers cleaned up a park, 35 bags of litter. It was arranged with the council like on other previous occasions that the litter will be collected on Monday morning. We never had an issue. Then the above happened... some low life scum decided its great fun to set fire to some of the litter we collected. Why?! Why on earth would you do that?! Im lost for words.... some people give up their very little free time to do something good for our planet. We are volunteers, we dont get a penny for litter picking, we do this to make our planet a bit nicer and cleaner. COVID 19 is a big distraction to the environmental movement in Cameroon. To many, people COVID 19 presents a life threatening situation and requires more urgent action than environmental issues. The enthusiasm and passion that many had before the pandemic has dropped . People are more concerned about how they will survive in the face of the pandemic rather than engaging in eco-friendly activities. This might not be the case in other parts of the world but in Cameroon this has been my observation. I took Stopplastics challenge to pick up plastic beverage bottles and caps and look what I found! It was shocking how little time it took to collect 2 bags full of plastic bottles...they are everywhere. I picked these up in central Etobicoke in my local playground and it’s parking lot in no time at all. Why are we buying water in plastic bottles and why are we just tossing them wherever? Clearly this is an issue that needs to be addressed. Toronto city council please ban plastic beverage bottles...recycling is not the answer! I am a member of StopPlasticstoronto but I also belong to a local walking group so I decided to incorporate the two! When walking in local parks and ravines I carry my grabbers and a bag and cleanup what I can. This mess was the result of only four walks and I could have picked up much, much more but my bag filled quickly. And then it hit me...I cannot take responsibility for all of this plastic waste. It is disheartening, disturbing, appalling etc. etc. I will continue to pick up what I can but it is so clear to me that action needs to be taken against single use plastics NOW! - All the white bags and some of the trash cans contain about 10-20 containers of food all because a company was too greedy and because customers were too impatient.

- Neighbor refuses to take steps to keep their dogs at home. Almost every trash day we wake up to find our bags torn to shreds. They dont even offer to help (we set a trail camera up to make sure it was her dogs doing this).
