Being Black, I am privileged to have been raised in a Afro-Caribbean community that values the past and presence of its culture. Growing up I never had to think about my skin color which gave me freedom to explore my creativity and sexuality as Queer. GHS, My alma mater was the best place for my education especially in a historical town like Frederiksted that had a significant revolt. I was able to take courses like African American and Caribbean history that provided insights on the turmoil of slavery. My father has told me about personal struggles and racism he has dealt with. Listening to him I knew my dreams had to continue a legacy that his family started from Barbados, Grenada and Trinidad. My dream was to live in NYC with the intention of broadening the freedom I had growing up. I enrolled into great colleges that pushed my creativity and worked for people that provided me with unforgettable life experiences. In the beginning I was happy to be in a thriving place of influence but never realized myself assimilating to an industry that didn’t embrace Black culture. Most of the time I was the only Black person unnoticed because I had to be appreciative for the position I was in. Being Black in the United States is very different from being Black in the Caribbean and my privilege wasn’t distinct to me until experiences or people forced me to notice my way of being as different from others. These brutal current events have been happening to Black people for centuries and still inhumane. It’s painful to read about horrific experiences, visualize the ordeals of slaves at plantations I’ve visited or endure my own disregard from people who don’t understand. The importance is protecting my mental health and dealing with occurrences of being Black in a world that devalues my existence. To cope with the oppression of my feelings, meditation is a practice that decipher my thoughts into embracing who I am in a world of suffering. I am grateful to be alive during a time of Black culture transforming our world. Being Black is a privilege that comes with discrimination but it’s empowering to know I carry ancestral strength. #BlackLivesMatter - @julienalleyne on Instagram

Thankful to make it to my 25th birthday. This has been a year of mostly ups and also downs but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Some highlights of this year have been moving up in my career, traveling to Thailand and Japan for the 2nd and 5th time, and riding a motorbike because I was late for my reservation at Asia’s best restaurant Gaggan. Llegamos a Tirta Empul (Ubud, Bali) con Dharma, quien nos llevó a recorrer los templos de la región, además de a conocer casa y su familia. La atracción del templo, construido alrededor de un arroyo al que se le atribuían poderes mágicos, es bañarse, para lo cual hay que cubrirse con un sarong que se alquila en el lugar. No puedo explicarles lo congelada que estaba el agua 🥶! La primera vez que fui me hice la sota y sólo me mojé las piernas, pero en ese segundo recorrido no lo dudé y bueno... me congelé 😂 pero viví la experiencia completa! Story time - My trip to Bali really did make me feel like I was a part of a thriller movie. My trip was planned for 6 days and my return flight was booked even before going on the trip. Everything was absolutely normal the first three days and on the forth day there was a volcanic eruption of Mt Agung, all the flights were cancelled indefinitely. It got really chaotic with tourists stranded at the airport and all the hotels being overbooked. My flight was postponed indefinitely as well. I went through a travel agency and thankfully they came to our rescue at the last minute and arranged accommodation in another hotel. On day 7 there was a mini earthquake. A volcanic eruption and an earthquake, accompanied by heavy rains on the same trip with flights cancelled indefinitely! The locals made us feel calm and comfortable. My vacation was extended to 18 days and I decided to not let the panic get in my way, and ended up seeing the most beautiful side of Bali after being stranded there. (I was very hesitant to post this). Heartbreak is diving down to discover that the coral reef is completely dead and no creatures, save for some minnows, inhabit the waters anymore. I grew up going to Costa Rica to visit my family and every year, we go to Isla Tortuga. A stunning island by all means. I remember that on my last trip there, I noticed a lot of garbage in the ocean. I didn’t remember that from when I was young. But nothing would prepare me for what I was going to see later that day. My beloved reef-once filled with gorgeous fish species of all kinds, and colorful coral, was completely dead. There was nothing left. In the few short years since my last visit, over-tourism, pollution. as well as a lack of respect had resulted in a decimated marine environment. I swam for a few hours and headed up to the beach where I took this picture. I had a really amazing time. But that trip was equally haunting. I never expected the reef to be dead within a few years. It was extremely jarring. Please take care of our oceans. Ocean and wildlife conservation is more import now than ever. Also: please check your sunscreen prior to swimming in a reef. Many of them are extremely toxic and tragically destroy the reefs that are a cornerstone of our ecosystem. Please do research prior to swimming in the ocean and use reef-friendly sunscreens when possible. Please share this. 🇹🇭 Koh Phi Phi Lee, Maya Bay, Thailandia. . . 🏝 Esta playa paradisíaca se hizo muy famosa gracias a la película “La playa”, protagonizada por Leonardo DiCaprio y estrenada en el 2000. La película cuenta la historia de un mochilero enfrascado en la búsqueda de una legendaria playa que no ha sido tocada por el turismo. En la realidad Maya Bay es impresionante pero realmente estaba abarrotada de gente, en un solo día, durante la temporada alta, esta diminuta costa de 300 metros recibía cerca de 3.500 visitantes. A causa del masivo turismo, los corales de Maya Bay estaban muertos en 2017, por ello los funcionarios de la isla Phi Phi señalaron que, por tratarse de un área de reserva natural, los arrecifes de corales necesitaban desesperadamente un tiempo para recuperarse. Así pues, el 1 de junio de 2018 se estableció una demarcación hasta la cual los botes podrían llegar, pero no cruzar. 📍Ahora mismo se puede visitar Maya Bay, pero solo se puede llegar a 300 metros de la playa en barco, no se permite el acceso a tierra.
