IAN MC LAGAN & ROGER: 2014? Touring Beck’s acoustic oriented Morning Phase album. Smokey Hormel, our long time band member and all things fretted historian, of course knew Ian from I believe a Rick Rubin project they worked on together. He invited Ian down to this Austin City Limits performance. I had seen Ian’s “Bump Band” perform in Austin several times and had been as inspired by them as much as anything he had done w all of the greats he’d already been associated w in the past. starstruck is an understatement. In person he could not have made me feel more at ease as he was the literal fun-lovin, easy-goin’ cartoon character and epitome of the classic rock, British Blues-er ethos. We talked for hours and then we were both wisked away. He died within the year. @derekdraws sent me this photo that I mailed to him back in the day. Back in the early era of the Internet I was learning to make websites, I needed new pictures for the Link 80 website. We met at the house @steveborth2 was living at in Berkeley & I forced everyone to take a bunch of photos that I was going to use to redesign the website. It would have been a white website, and on the member page all six members would have stood across the bottom of the page. When you hovered over the member, they’d be holding their instrument, and it would bring up a short bio. This was an outtake, I’m pretty sure there was a more sedate picture of me holding my guitar. I can’t remember why I didn’t go through with the redesign I imagined, but it probably had something to do with the time it took to get the photos back after being developed, a line up change, & thinking the quality of the photos wasn’t good enough (looking at them now, they’re fine). Also, making websites back then was super time consuming, and I was a lot slower at Photoshop. I wanted to process the photos so they looked like high contrast photocopies, back then the best way to create that effect was to just make a photocopy. I wound up making a flyer with these photos for a show at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz that sort of mimicked how I wanted the website to look. It wasn’t made in a computer, I did it cut & paste. - @0mnig0ne on Instagram

This year – october 9th – John would celebrate his 80. Birthday. I miss him very much and I think often of the many experiences we shared . For example singing with him together in duet of his cover version of “Bring It On Home to Me” was very exciting for me. It was part of a medley on his Rock ‘n’ Roll Album (Release 1975). The amazing orginial was sang by Sam cook and Lou Rawls. My new artprint reflects this very special moment. A drop of bitterness was my bass sound and Jesse Ed’s wonderful guitar solo caused by the mixing sound engineer who used compressor and limiter. „AP65 - Bring it on home to me“ Now available in the shop.
