Incendiary bombs descend in a hail of fire and fury onto the city of Kobe, Japan from B-29 Superfortress bombers; 1945. This mission formed part of the strategic bombing campaign waged by the United States against military and civilian targets during the Japan home islands campaign in the closing stages of World War II. The sixth-largest city in Japan at the time, with a population of roughly 1 million it would be bombed once more a month later. The houses were mostly built with wood making them highly flammable. As Japans largest port, home to the largest concentration of shipbuilding and industry, and an important city for transportation Kobe was a high priority target. Its low water supply and poor firefighting equipment created quite literally a tinderbox for city wide destruction. Of the citys residents, 8,841 were confirmed to have been killed in the resulting firestorms, destroying 21% of Kobes urban area. More than 650,000 people had their homes destroyed. During the raid, 280 Japanese fighters were spotted, 96 of which engaged the B-29 bombers in 128 attacks; this constituted a higher proportion of fighters sighted to those attacking than previously experienced during a night raid over Japan. Three bombers were lost during the raid. Two of the airmen in the downed aircraft, Sergeant Algy S. Augunus and Second Lieutenant Robert E. Copeland, survived and were captured by the Japanese. They were subsequently tried by a hastily convened court for the indiscriminate bombing of Kobe and Osaka, sentenced to death, and executed by firing squad. - @lookthroughhistory on Instagram

Bobby Jones III and I have had 13 years of friendship, a big chunk of this time being very formative years of my life. A great deal of these memories include laughing until our faces hurt and roasting the ever loving shit out of each other, followed by the Bobby Jones gentle giggle + shoulder squeeze combo. There is so much to say about Bobby. But, in short; he was gentle, loving and kind, obscenely generous-to his detrament, so, so goddamn funny and self deprecating, incredibly curious and extremely intelligent, he had a talent for linguistics, he was a bit ocd, and he was fiercely protective and very proud of those he cared for. He defined a big part of him by the ones he held dear. Someone who knew him very intimately said to me, ‘he had so much love for everyone else, he didn’t save any for himself’. I wish that wasn’t so goddamn accurate. In our last conversation, he’d just gotten home from the hospital, deciding he wanted to come home to pass comfortably. The first thing he said to me on the phone was, ‘I’m sorry that I missed your birthday, what’d ya do?’ I fought back tears as I told him about how I’d spent my day. In some of his last moments, my birthday was on the forefront of his mind. That’s Bobby. When we got off the phone, he said he’d call me back once he got settled in. The last thing we said to each other was I love you. I am forever grateful for that. His passing is complex and tragic and unfair and quite frankly I do not know how to reconcile with it. This insidious disease had it’s grip on him, and the loss of his beloved brother was profound and the sadness that followed for years was debilitating. I will grapple still, with what I could’ve done better or differently as a friend, while I reassure everyone that there isn’t anything that we could’ve done. Because there wasn’t. Bobby was secretive and proud and stubborn and he never wanted anyone to make a fuss over him. True to Bobby, he did things his way and he fought like hell till the end. This still doesn’t feel real and I don’t know when it will. But I am thankful for this friendship, for all of it, even the hard stuff. I love you dumb dumb. - @emirirozu on Instagram

An Open Letter to NYC 9/11/2015 Five years ago my old friend Efar and I traveled to Saint Louis after hitting Detroit for the famous Mississippi River wall. We tried to pull on off at the @paintlouis festival which is reaching back to 1995 and hosts a lot of good writers the us. The event really supported us with 3 days time, three nights with a roof, 20 cans (15 black, 5 white) and huge wall. We wanted to stand out and cover most of it with not spending more money in material. Since it was 9/11 we organized a free and big bucket of white roller paint and painted the famous cover of @beastieboysstory album „To the 5 Boroughs“ which holds a song „An open letter to NYC“ in memory of the twin towers. Everything was painted with spray, freehand and under quite some heat while efar had to do some work on the side I painted the background. The festival was very inspiring and I hold strong feelings and good memories. Griffin is thrilled to introduce the recipient of our Summer 2020 Griffin Art Projects North Shore Studio Residency Award, Lindsay McIntyre! Lindsay will be presenting a live artist talk over Zoom on Saturday, August 29th at 1 PM. Lindsay McIntyre is a film artist with an MFA in Film Production from Concordia and a BFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Alberta. She applies her interest in analogue technologies, film chemistry and structure to make award-winning short 16mm films and expanded cinema performances. Her works are often process-based and involve documentary and experimental techniques. Interested simultaneously in the apparatus of cinema, portraiture, representation and personal histories, she bridges gaps in collective experience and remains dedicated to integrating theory and practice, form and content. Her current research involves the autoethnographical exploration of intergenerational trauma and the grandmother effect as a biological survival mechanism and also the ways and means of Indigenizing institutions. Internationally, she has contributed a body of knowledge to the practice of silver gelatin emulsion making and coating for motion picture film and teaches this and other celluloid-based practices wherever anyone will listen, aiming to make analogue filmmaking accessible. She was honoured with the REVEAL Indigenous Art Award from the Hnatyshyn Foundation (2017) and was awarded the Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award for Excellence in Media Arts by the Canada Council (2013). She is Assistant Professor of Film + Screen Arts at Emily Carr University of Art and Design on unceded Coast Salish territories and is of Inuit and settler Scottish decent.
