Pause before you offer up any “advice” because it may be logical, but your support/shoulder is typically what he/she is looking for. 3. Be kind. Infertility + Hormones + Financial burden can do a number on a person/couple. Try to cut one another some slack, but abuse should never be tolerated. 4. Don’t point fingers. You guys are in this together, a team. 5. Keep doing things you love to do. 6. Have the tough questions. How do you feel about adoption, donor egg, donor sperm, donor embryo, child-free? 7. Be involved. I know it’s difficult with COVID these days, but at least know when appointments are and procedures are happening. 8. Be curious. You both have questions/concerns...I know you do! Ask the doctor. 9. Be honest. You both need to be on the same page. 10. Love, love, love one another ❤️ .. Not saying Dan and I didn’t struggle during our journey, some steps above were extremely challenging. We fumbled...a lot! Some days were better than others. But we learn from our journeys and reflection is a great way to educate and support. .. Vitamin D deficiency and calcium balance is underlying nearly every chronic disease process. There is a big body of evidence suggesting it induces fibrosis (calcification) of the lungs. [STUDY LINK AT END OF POST] And it unmasks a really important Lung-Kidney connection Makes sense? So why haven’t we made this link before? The key, is to look at the mouth first. For teeth, vitamin D deficiency increases the risk of tooth decay. Tooth enamel exists in constant calcium flux. Actually your whole body is, muscles, nerves, cells all depend on the movement and balance of calcium. Tooth decay is the body’s inability to replace the flux of calcium into tooth enamel. That’s why we have to really put a microscope to what is happening with our teeth. Because it leads us straight to the root cause! And vitamin D is the king of calcium. Ok so in this study:v“Chronic vitamin D deficiency induces lung fibrosis through activation of the renin-angiotensin system” What did they do? Induced Vit D deficiency in a group of mice: They used a vitamin D deficient diet to induce a vitamin D deficiency in the experimental group: What did they find? • Chronic vitamin D deficiency destroys lung structures, impairs lung development and induces fibrosis (calcification). • Fibrosis induces a shortness of breath due to a sudden buildup of fluid in the lungs Why did it happen? • They found that it imbalanced KIDNEY hormones (renin-angiotensin) • Kidney hormones balance calcium and phosphate excretion from the kidneys. • Vitamin D deficiency increases the release of kidney hormones (RAS) to stop the excretion of calcium. • The lungs are effected by kidney hormones because extracellular fluid is retained. • As vitamin D deficiency gets worse, calcium becomes more sparse, and mitochondrial calcium levels drop, a series of changes shift cell remodeling and induce fibrosis The result? To often it seems like we are so close to our destination in life and then all of a sudden a massive setback derails us from our goals and we never end up achieving them, leaving us with dreams and outcomes that could have been. For me what I’ve learned in my health, relationship, and business is the more the pain you can endure for a longer period of time the more opportunity and greater outcome you can achieve. 58 years ago tonight, Deputy United States Marshals operating under the authority of the White House and enforcing a court order from the Supreme Court, stood their ground on the steps of the Lyceum on the campus of Ole Miss facing off against more than 3,000 protestors. As a result of their actions, James Meredith, a Black United States Air Force veteran, was able to exercise his civil rights, enrolling in the previously all-white university. While the Marshals enforce the ruling using only tears gas, the mob threw bricks, bottles, and rocks ath the deputies and fired guns in their direction, defacing the facade of the building, injuring multiple deputies, and nearly killing one deputy from Indiana. Additionally, two individuals not associated with the Deputies were killed by members of the mob. Completing the highest number of robotic assisted head and neck cancer surgeries in Australia today A/Prof Richard Gallagher hit his 300th Robotic assisted procedure, an incredible achievement 👏 • Robotic assisted procedures have transformed the way in which our surgeons are able to deliver patient care👨🏻⚕️🏥🩺 • We asked A/Prof Gallagher to share an insight into this technology and what it now means for patients with head and neck cancers. • “Cancers at the back of the tongue and tonsils, in most cases are related to the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and in about 50% of patients we are able to treat them successfully with an operation alone using robotic assisted surgery, this means often these patients do not need any other treatment such as radiation and / or chemotherapy. Ultimately it translates to better patient outcomes with minimal to no disturbance to speech and swallowing. Time to shout out the TYAC unit at Royal Surrey. Today was just meant to be a zolendronate infusion and a counselling session. It turned out to be much, much more. The nurses welcomed me and listened to my concerns- even reaching out to one of the consultants and organising an impromptu visit for me. They make living with cancer just that little bit (a lot) easier- Thank you! PS, zolendronic acid is a bisphosphonate which helps slow down any cells that break down bone. Where the cancer has spread to my bones the zolendronate helps prevent it spreading any further. First timers might experience short term side effects such as flu like symptoms, bone, joint and muscle pain but these usually subside by day 2. Bukan berarti aku jago, tapi suka dengan pekerjaannya. Nah... Tertarik ambil spesialis bedah mulut? Belum tentu, hampir semua bidang kedokteran gigi aku suka. Jadi masa koass dulu tersiksa ga? With a spike of 82,170 coronavirus cases and 1,039 deaths in 24 hours, Indias tally on Monday breached the 60 lakh-mark with a total of 60,74,702 cases. Out of these, 9,62,640 are currently active whereas the number of discharged cases stands at 50,16,520. While 95,542 lost the battle against the viral disease. On July 17, India had logged 10 lakh cases, which then doubled to 20 lakh on August 7. The country added another 10 lakh on August 23 and went past 40 lakh on September 5. In 11 days, it added another 10 lakh cases, amounting to 50 lakh cases. Twelve days later the tally has mounted to 60 lakh. @vicky.doing.science is a second-year Biochemistry PhD student at Florida International University. Victoria’s research focuses on uncovering the role of JNK signalling in neurodegenerative diseases. Neurodegenerative diseases affect millions worldwide, but the available treatment options are lacking. For example, around 90% of Parkinson’s disease (PD) cases are sporadic, meaning there is no underlying familial (i.e., inherited) genetic mutation to explain these cases. This makes treatment a challenge since the cause of many sporadic PD cases is unknown. However, the etiology of PD is widespread neuronal cell death, and studies are pointing to long-term exposure to environmental neurotoxins, over ones lifetime, as a potential culprit. ⠀ ⠀ Organophosphates, the main chemical component of widely used herbicides, pesticides, and insecticides, are an example of such environmental neurotoxins. Interestingly, JNKs are a class of cell signalling molecules that stimulate the process of neuronal cell death following exposure to neurotoxins. Therefore, uncovering how neurotoxin exposure activates this JNK signalling pathway may lead to the discovery of a therapeutic to treat the symptoms of patients suffering from neurodegenerative diseases such as PD. To study this, Victoria exposes neuronal cells to organophosphates. If I had one word of advice to new grads on how to improve patient compliance - it is to EDUCATE! 📖 Even speaking in laymans term, patients often are overwhelmed by the information given to them and the eye is quite a complicated part of the body. ✨ Here are my top three things to help you get the message across: 1) Eye Models - everyone loves 3D models, and it helps a patient understand where exactly the problem is located! (Is a cataract a film over the eye or a clouding in the lens inside?) 2) Diagnostic Imaging- a picture is worth a thousand words. Describe a retinal tear in someones eye isnt the same as showing them the tear! Likewise, imaging can be expanded to anterior problems. 3) Brochures- you might think thats old school and will just go to waste, but people do glance at them, especially your elderly patients! What better way to celebrate 400K on IG than to share with you my friends that I had #COVID19 and am okay thankfully and recently went to @mountsinainyc to donate plasma! My experience of the virus was something similar to the flu, I never had trouble breathing fortunately, but I know many others have had different, more severe experiences and my heart goes out to those who have. I think in this crazy time it’s important to figure out what concrete steps we can take to help get everyone through this. Let’s be smart not afraid. Mt. Sinai and many other hospitals are doing this amazing thing which you can read more about in the LINK IN BIO. They’re collecting plasma from folks like me who’ve had it and recovered in an effort to distill the antibodies into a more concentrated form to help treat other folks and protect our much needed frontline workers. It’s called #HyperimmuneGlobulin So if you’ve recovered from Covid I highly recommend donating your plasma. Took about an hour and was relatively painless. I don’t believe in any politician as much as I believe in people and our ability to help each other when times are tough. I’m excited for the day when we can get back to human connection, people working to feed their families and pay their rent, kids back in school... not to mention all those beautiful things that make life extraordinary like a good meal out with friends, live music, theatre, sports... all that fun stuff. And we will. With the help of amazing folks like the health care workers at Mt Sinai. I had hoped to include a few pictures of the staff who helped me but Dr. Choo bravely declined any Instagram glory :) But THANK YOU Dr. Choo, Crystal, Katherine, Merle and all the amazing folks at Mt. When the results for my COVID test came two days later, doctors were doubtful about my reaction. I told them not to worry since Im a doctor myself. I knew that I could handle whatever the situation might be. Thats when they revealed that I was COVID-19 positive. As soon as the news spread, many of our neighbours panicked. The city administration council put up posters outside our door. People clicked photos and shot videos of my house. They shared it with my name, address, and personal details on different WhatsApp groups. Since people love to gossip on WhatsApp, ugly stories about me started circulating in social media. Even the news media put out the wrong kinds of stories. Despite going straight to the hospital from the airport, I had to be the victim of social media hatred. I didnt even go home to collect my personal belongings to make sure that I didnt transmit the virus to anyone. Thankfully, I started recovering and, after a few days, tested negative. But the hounding didnt stop after I was back home. I knew that going back home will be an unpleasant experience. Therefore, to avoid attention from neighbours and media, I insisted on going home late at night. Not just me but my entire family had to experience the harassment. My younger brother didnt step out of the house for two months. Neither did I. I would only step out during the night to avoid people. When I step out, I can still sense the eerie stares and gossip. It is like a bad dream - Im all alone. People refuse to hear when I plead to them that I didnt do anything wrong. The only way we can fight this pandemic is with the right balance of precaution and empathy. Yes, we need to be careful. But we also shouldnt let our fears overpower humanity within us”. Since first year labs are all online this term, Sue has been working hard to ensure that the labs will still run smoothly, and that all of this years students still have the best learning experience possible. .
