This month, I’m helping Community Town Federation (CTF), a women-led community organization of city-wide informal settlement (‘slum’) dwellers in Korail, Dhaka, reach their goal of $5k. Korail is the largest informal settlement in Bangladesh and is home to over 100,000 residents. These urban farmers and daily-wage earners fall among the millions of Bangladeshis who lost jobs and have no source of income due to COVID-19. Many of these women are coping with food insecurity by relying on their existing urban farming practices to feed and sustain themselves. Taking Care Of Yourself. In the midst of living life, being busy or rushing around, are you conscious of how you’re taking care of yourself? Taking care of one’s self is fundamental in life. Often we can forget or overlook how important this is for our daily existence. Prior to burning out, I thought I was taking care of myself. I exercised regularly (and likely at times, too much, as I was also teaching fitness) and I ate my regular meals, (although looking back, not nutritionally), but there were other areas of my being where I failed to look after myself. Can you relate? I was focused on taking care of the physical aspects of my being, but neglected other areas and perhaps even assumed that they would take care of themselves. It was only after my health crisis that I realised the gaps in my self care. At one time, whilst working with me, one of my clients commented: “Lillian, I didn’t realise that taking care of myself is a full time job”. And it is. We live in our bodies and function from our brains 24-7, and if we’re not taking good care of our vessels, as well as, creating a healthy lifestyle and environment in order to thrive, we’ll start to see our health, and well-being collapse. This is why I created the Wheel Of Wellness as a reminder of areas we get to take care of, so that we can flourish and flow in life. The report released on Tuesday indicated how the women in India are increasingly becoming unsafe. The latest case before us is the Hathras gang-rape and murder where a 19-year-old Dalit girl was brutally violated by four upper-caste men in Uttar Pradesh. The girl, who was allegedly raped on September 14, died at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital on Monday during treatment. The latest NCRB report further reveals how a woman is raped every 16 minutes in India, while a dowry death occurs every hour. The data further shows that a woman is subjected to cruelty at the hands of her in-laws or husband every four minutes, said a report in News18 online. The 2019 NCRB report further reveals that a woman becomes a victim of acid attack almost every two days. While a woman is gang-raped and murdered every 30 hours in India. A woman faces a rape attempt every two hours. The case of assault with intent to outrage a woman’s modesty is reported every six minutes. Been late to update (been waiting till the right time to protect our brave allies). This is from 4th of July (but in the works since even earlier—back in March)! a couple months ago, our networks of nurses and doctors were being walked out in handcuffs for passing out PPE so we had to start an underground bottom-top network (the real roots of PPEforHCP) of free donations that even included the US Veterans Affairs. A few of us on OSCMS spun off a Signals group to design (medical) protective equipment for peaceful protesters (inspired by Hong Kong) as soon as June 1; this was to keep our community healthy/reduce hospital resource impacting (on the bigger scope/support freedom, liberty, and justice). We couldn’t do it without your support, the support of a few brave individuals going against the grain (sacrificing the REAL threat of getting fired for not “staying in their lane” or often worse) in US Customs, UPS, SJPD, hospitals, FEMA, fire department, Hong Kong/mainlanders, etc. Advocates for health and good doctors/nurses and frontlines come from all sides. Until today (April 3rd), this model of masks was not even allowed to be used by healthcare professionals. Our nonprofit was almost over before it started. We didn’t want to take from healthcare workers but also felt it was extremely important that people were able to wear masks in grocery stores everywhere. Mindful of this, we did as much research as possible. We found that the FDA approving the KN95 mask for medical use didn’t mean that every KN95 mask was approved. The masks that we import aren’t made in a factory certified by the FDA. Therefore, it will not take away from medical PPE supply chains. In fact, there are billions of these masks already. It’s the most readily available mask in the world. They’re just not commonly used in the Western Hemisphere. We need to take quarantine a little more seriously and masking up for every grocery store trip is how. Dr. Fauci, the head of our infectious disease task force stated the other night that quarantine could last until we get a vaccine approved. He then said a vaccine could take 12 to 18 months best case scenario. Imagine.. this would be devastating for so many. We have to find a way to make our quarantine effective. Every grocery store customer should be wearing masks and every grocery store employee should be wearing PPE. Last year, while our aftercare team was following up with a survivor in one of our partnering aftercare homes, they found out about a need that another young girl had in the home. We believe in supporting survivors, children of survivors, and aftercare homes as a whole. Little 2-year-old “Mariana” was born with club feet, a seizure disorder, and a heart condition that made doctors in her country hesitant to perform surgery. We sent out a message looking for doctors in the states who would be willing to help, and a team leader in Utah asked his roommate if his father, Dr. Nelson of Cache Valley Hospital, would be willing. He and Dr. Daniel Huff gladly obliged to help. This incredible act of service would not have happened without our amazing network of volunteers! We seek to echo the original mid-19th century Underground Railroad, which utilized a network of people with different abilities to support needs and bring more people to freedom. - @ourrescue on Instagram
