13K views · 356 reactions | 30 Years of WOMADelaide - Peter Gabriel | 🦁Good morning and welcome to 30 years of WOMADelaide from the World of Music, Arts and Dance founder Peter Gabriel WOMAD Festival | By WOMADelaide | Hi, this is Peter Gabriel in London and I cant believe its now 30 years since WOMAD was first created. Um it was 90 the ninety2 festival Adelaide Festival that Rob Brookman invited us to become a part of and I remember the excitement in the WOMAD camp when we got that invitation. And to see now what its become and Um how many great artists have traveled through that festival. Um its a wonderful thing and I really want to thank all the amazing people that made it possible and all the extraordinary people that have been interested enough to turn up and make it a regular part of of their lives because it now does have that regular audience that I I hope will guarantee it a long future. Um So heres to the next 30 and big congratulations. But when we began WOMAD you know it came out of a a crazy idea just to try and pull artists together from all over the world. It was really hard to find and to to see particularly live. And so I called the people that I knew that had shown some interest as this young group of journalists who ran this magazine record thing called the Bristol Recorder. Um Ricky Stein who worked with Fella and was as an label experience himself and then Mark Caddell whod done films and we started brainstorming and trying to build something and it was the essence of the Bristol Recorder team under Thomas that sort of brought WOMAD into the world then as a regular event after that first year and its been really exciting because it we were able to export the festival not just to Australia but I think to more than 30 other countries and its done different things in different places. It means different things. Uh sometimes these are open public sort of council funded events. And and other times theyre more like what WOMAD is or WOMAD in the UK. Um and three day events with campaign and workshops and a lot of other things that people have grown to love. Um its been a transformative thing for me. You know the tours Ive done with WOMAD and just some of the artists that Ive met and worked with blew me away. And you know I know Yusu well ended ended up spending quite a lot of time in Senegal. One of the things that happened with it you know however inhibited and white you may be once youre amongst a group of African musicians youre youre in there youre making a noise and youre dancing theres no judgement fortunately and Im sure those of you that are lucky enough to celebrate this 30th anniversary will be in there and hopefully dancing in exactly the same way that I was.
