Mask, 52 years old. He is one of the oldest Giants in Poland. Now homeless for over 37 years. From the beginning of the pandemic, I have been working on a project about the Giants (in polish a word describing somebody who ran away from home), people in a homelessness crisis. For several weeks I have been roaming the streets of Warsaw. Sometimes we talk for hours charging phones from street lamps. I listen to stories. Stories about old life, about reality in times of the virus, indifference and non-existence. Slowly, I’m trying to understand and see a pattern. A combination of bad luck, unequal opportunities and personal traumas. Sometimes, coming back home, I am struck by a wave of emotions that I cant digest. My privilege, my happiness, my home. I met former paramedics, soldiers, drivers, hairdressers, pizza delivery guys and foremen. No one refused to talk to me. Everyone offered me what they had. Many lost their homes when their businesses fell or they fell ill. When the streets are empty and many help centres have been closed or isolated, they especially need help. There are over six thousand people without a home in Warsaw today. When we can stay at home and hashtag our posts #stayhome, we need to pay attention to those, who we don’t notice on a daily basis. Today it is extremely easy to meet the Homeless in the city streets. Ask if you can help. Check if someone in a homelessness crisis is not hungry, does not need a mask or additional clothing. Many of my friends sew masks. If you can give some away, I will gladly hand them out on the street. Hi there, I’m @parisa.ae an Iranian filmmaker and photographer based in Amsterdam. I’ll be taking over @doc_photo_magazine and @fotodok_org Instagram accounts for today and I would like to share with you: Tehran Diary, my long term series featured in the latest edition, issue #46, of the Doc! Photo Magazine. Tehran Diary is a project on my mothers life in Tehran, and while visiting her three children living abroad. After printing the images, I sensed an urge to use black and white paint on each photo. It was as if every image offered the possibility of becoming a living moment capable of offering a three dimensional setting for the world I was trying to create. Photographing her and spending time on each photo through the addition of paint, had a therapeutic effect on me. I realised that by going through this process I was eventually spending more time with her when she was not around. I have signed up for a sculpting course and here’s my finished 1:1 head bust. Sculpting is a really great observation practice. Great for getting better at anatomy too, which is crucial in drawing. I’m hoping to do more of these in the future, but either on a smaller scale or just in Zbrush (less messy) 😄. Have you ever thought about what you would do if war broke out in your home country? Yesterday I spent the afternoon with photo-journalist Hazir Reka / @hazirreka listening to stories and looking through his archive. As a student Hazir would be on the front-line of protests in Kosovo documenting the fight against authoritarianism, by the time war had broken out he found himself at the centre of the bloodiest conflict Europe had seen since WWII. After the fall of Yugoslavia, Kosovo faced aggressive expansion from Serbian Forces. Villages were burned to the ground, civilians were tortured, raped and brutally murdered. Hundreds of thousands fled the country as Kosovo lay as a centre ground in a battle between East vs West. Following a NATO led intervention, and the deaths of thousands more, the conflict came to an end in 1999 and in 2008 they gained their independence. The country today still faces a battle to stabilise their democracy and eradicate Sectarian division but they are on the path to forge their own future. I don’t think anyone really knows what they’d do during a war, until they are in one. For many the fight will be fought with guns, but for Hazir, he fought with his camera. He, and others like him, expose the reality of war, they force us to watch and without them the Kosovo I’m standing in today, would be a different place altogether. Woman with dead Child, 1903. /Well be looking at some work by Käthe Kollwitz for a few weeks. Käthe Kollwitz was a German artist whose artworks often depict the effects of poverty, hunger and war on the working class. Despite the realism of her early works, her art is now more closely associated with Expressionism. / . For this particular composition, she reveals in a letter that she used herself and her youngest son Peter as models. looking in the mirror for reference. Swipe to see studies done for this piece. . /The letter reads/- .....When he was seven years old and I was working on the etching (Woman with dead Child) I did a drawing of myself, holding him on my arm, in front of the mirror. That was very exhausting and I groaned. Then he said in his little child’s voice: Stop groaning, mum, it is going to be very beautiful… . Hans Kollwitz, the artist’s elder son, associated the death of his younger brother Peter who fell in the war with these two picture series: . I asked mother where she got the image of the mother with her dead child from – years before the war – which featured in almost all her pictures from that period. She thought she foresaw Peter’s death even then.
