One of the older varieties we grow, Roxbury Russet! Discovered growing in Roxbury, Massachusetts in the mid 1600s- it can be eaten fresh or pressed into hard cider or juice. Yet another apple we have growing here that used to be one of Thomas Jefferson’s favorites, grown at Monticello. The russeting is the reason commercial growers won’t touch this apple. Some final #peachglamourshots for 2020 season. Like most things this calendar year, our 2020 peach crop followed suit with massive disappointment and heartache. Don’t get me wrong! Quality was great! Especially mid season. But, as anyone with a wholesale relationship with our farm learned long ago, five unique frost events in March reduced our peach crop by 50%, thereabouts. If you purchase from us at a farmers market, you likely had no idea anything was wrong. Because our market customers come first. Yes, even the handful of folks who are rude and snap at me and my staff for following COVID protocols. We saved these peaches for you too. Wholesale buyers who purchase sometimes thousands of dollars of peaches a week got none so our market customers could get what they need. Just a gentle reminder that getting up early in the morning is just the tip of the iceberg - it’s the only part visible to most. There’s so much more that goes into this job. Likely nobody reading this far would have the insensitivity to get snappy with us and far be it me to make a bigger deal out of this than it is with everything else going on in our world right now. Wednesday September 23rd we’ll open Jonagold and Crimson Crisp Varieties at $1.25/lb. These two have a super light crop so they will not last long. We’ll continue picking Jonathan and Cortland at $1.25/lb until they’re picked clean. We have Gala apples pre-picked in 1/2 bushel boxes for $28/box. Nana Mae’s Organics is a small, family-owned business, which grows and produces more than 25 Heirloom varieties on 400 acres of historic apple orchards in Sonoma County. Kenwood couple Paul and Kendra Kolling, owners of Nana Mae Organics pick each apple at the peak of maturity, ending up with a tasting palate similar to a winemakers. First come the Gravensteins in late July, followed in succession by more than 20 other apple varieties, including Jonathans and Rhode Island Greenings. The season is still in full swing and closes in late September with the Rome Beauty. This bounty is used to produce an award-winning line of products, such as their 100% Gravenstein Apple Juice, Mid-Season Heirloom Apple Sauce, and Gravenstein Hard Apple Cider, that reflect apple variety and Sonoma County terroir. I dag, den 25 september, är det Äpplets Dag. Huvudsyftet med dagen är att öka intresset för och kunskapen om svenska äpplen och skötseln av fruktträd.
