We’ve been seeing for the past couple months, ever since COVID started, how geopolitical tensions have been rising between the US and China. War is not an impossibility. And something that is crucial for war is manufactured consent. The government manufactures consent among the people by creating propaganda stories. One such piece of propaganda is news surrounding Xinjiang. I grew up in China and have been hearing about Xinjiang since I was a child. “Business as usual”..... unfortunately this is not true! We are OPEN as usual with the same hours and have been lucky enough to keep all of our staff working full time. 2 of our 3 landlords have been great and understanding in regards to paying rent. We are fighting here everyday to not only keep our doors open but to keep the hard working staff of Cut & Sew employed. Business is down massively... 30-60%.... We have a small bit of support from the government which is appreciated / needed. For years we’ve been campaigning to #supportlocal and now more than ever as dublin is in another lockdown ( it’s a ghost town ) and think the government need to and should open up places of business and allow them to act responsibly like they were. We’ve seen NO evidence that cases came from restaurants or bars! MADNESS! Anyway, we have a bulletproof mindset here at C&S and wont give up! We WILL and DO support plenty of local businesses and WILL continue to look after you guys the valued customers and make your experience as good as ever! WATCH OUT MATE YOU COULD BE UNDER THAT: A dodgy contractor has sent chills down even the hardest tradesmen’s spine this afternoon, following a dicey joke about killing people. The self-employed career concreter by the name of Ernie Margolis cackles to himself with a proper gold tooth glistening in the sun, after insinuating that he has engaged in buried bound and gagged victim of organised crime or personal vendetta. In fact, Ernie follows up his joke by suggesting he’s actually killed more than one person. After an initial smoko conversation about how the severe heat was making his job harder, as the concrete was setting faster than usual, Ernie refers to the concrete slab in front of him as both the livelihood and bane of his existence. “These fucking things cause me so much shit. I don’t know why I fucking put up with them [laughter]” The rest of the site joins in on the chuckling, before Ernie shows his true colours. “I shouldn’t laugh too much. A lot of my problems have been solved under those slabs” Everyone goes a bit quieter except for a few equally as dodgy bikie-affiliated labourers who laugh even harder. “Loooots of problems” says Ernie, as to emphasise how much of psychopathic criminal he is. A young apprentice drops his water bottle out of confusion and nervousness, before Ernie and the dodgy bikies break into laughter again. Ernie assures the young bloke that he needn’t worry about drowning to death face-down in a thick layer of wet cement. “Don’t worry young fella. #bushfirebrandalism Last week 41 Aussie Artists took to the streets of Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne for the nation’s largest unsanctioned art campaign. As a collective group, we have been driven to reclaim public advertising space with posters speaking to the Australian government’s inaction on climate change and the devastating bushfires. We do not accept that this situation is ‘business as usual’. Driver Plaza, also known as The Island, has been a longtime hub for Black seniors in Oakland. And for years, the community has been fighting for the right to pee in their gathering place. Time and time again, community members (like @villageoakland) have paid to place a Porta Potty in the triangular plaza. COVID-19: Why we are temporarily postponing our events On Friday 13 March 2020, the federal and state governments met to discuss strategies for containing the COVID-19 virus in Australia. The advice from health officials to governments was that events over 500 people should not go ahead until the pandemic is contained. This move is designed to slow the pace of spread and keep our health system from being overwhelmed like we have seen in countries like Italy. Whilst The Makers and Shakers Market doesn’t strictly fit the criteria of a ‘mass gathering’, it also doesn’t feel right to go ahead with our April markets until Australia’s health and political authorities signal that this situation is under control. The phrase ‘uncharted territory’ has been used a lot and that’s the one thing we’re all experiencing together: nobody knows how this crisis will unfold and it’s that uncertainty which makes things so difficult as we simply can’t predict the outcome. We are acutely aware of how important events are to the livelihoods of our makers. Organising events is our livelihood and deciding to postpone these events will hit us personally very hard in the short term (and we can’t think of a business that won’t be affected). But our duty of care to the health of attendees and stallholders is paramount. Sadly, we are all facing some really challenging times ahead. Like the entire events industry, The Makers and Shakers Market will bounce back soon. Until then, take care and be kind to each other. Great article in The New York Times this morning about how to protect children’s eyes while they spend so much time on computers for remote learning! Here is a small summary of the article: ▫️ 1.) Take frequent breaks from looking at material up close - use the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away, for 20 seconds. This relaxes the focusing system. ▫️ 2.) Hold devices and material further from your face. We tend to hold things like phones very close, forcing us to converge our eyes, accommodate, and put strain on our focusing system. The Doctor in the article recommends holding reading material at about 2 feet from your face. ▫️ 3.) Pay attention to signs your child needs glasses or a new prescription including: closing one eye, squinting, moving closer to see things, and difficulty with sustained reading. ▫️ 4.) Take your child for an eye exam! Many parents don’t know their child needs glasses because children don’t know the difference between blurry and clear when they are very young and don’t know how to articulate that they can’t see well. I wrote about how almost/kinda losing my restaurants pushed me to care about politics (@KCRW LINK IN BIO). I was intimidated by the assignment, a little afraid/ashamed to share that I knew so little about the subject before. It was @gillian_ferguson’s suggestion to try (this was pre-DNC). There is a lot about politics that I still don’t know, and there is a lot that I question as far as worth + impact, plenty that I feel overwhelmed by. . I am used to waking up every day, startled by the weight of responsibility to keep a restaurant in operation. But since mid-March, I found myself shifting my priorities to learn about the system. Legislation. It became abundantly clear that, in this country, we lacked the leadership in the White House to be in control of this virus in any kind of timely way, and a lot would suffer because of it. I do not know where independent restaurants fall as far as what’s MOST important + vital, but I can just share from an intimate perspective what my experience as a restaurateur has been like, how deeply afraid I am to disappoint + fail — and attempt to speak somewhat universally. And hopefully, these elected individuals in position of power would listen, spread the word, and massage their influence to find solutions to help. As we all have had to do. . I am *amazed* that the RESTAURANTS Act, this thing we’ve been fighting for, has been included in the HEROES Act. The Senate will vote on it as early as tomorrow. It could help restaurants inch along … but again, this is a game of time. . My distraction last Fri was to drive all over the city + deliver cocktail grams by @jfiguer1. I knocked on doors + was greeted with a lot of suspicious looks, which soon turned into all-out shock: Someone got you a gift from All Day Baby, I would say! All the grams arrived with a some CA voter info that I put together. A BIG shout-out to @alicesbrink for helping with the deliveries (she did the 110 route!). And to @leighva5 for her guidance + donated @votesaveamerica stickers. .
