Thank you everyone for the birthday wishes and for sharing my new song! It’s a little self-indulgent to release new music on my birthday, but frankly I’ve been feeling blue all cooped up in my home and missing making music with my friends. . I’m used to writing music for musical theatre, where all the specifics of the music are derived from a story, and therefore there’s a bit of anonymity that I experience as the songwriter. This song is different. Ever since I was a child I’ve always written music to help me work through difficult moments in my life. I’ve got hundreds of songs tucked away in notebooks that haven’t really seen the light of day. . I wrote When it Rains it Pours over 3 years ago. I was really struggling to be honest about my insecurities in my marriage and I allowed myself to silently grow resentment and sadness without ever expressing any of it. I wrote this song to help me “face the music” and push through those insecurities and be more vulnerable and trust my husband with the deep insecurities and fears that I kept tucked away under my smiling face. As it often goes, once you start you can’t stop. Word vomit much? This song just tumbled right out of my heart and onto the piano all at once. When it rains it pours. . Over the years I shared it with some friends. @wizzypoww and @rkpallen would come over to my house and sing harmonies with me and helped me hear how the vocals could be. @jluna8391 and @camwomackdrums spent an afternoon recording a demo of the song with me years ago so I could hear it with rhythm. But I was still too nervous to share the song publicly. . Then comes this pandemic. Isolation. Missing my theatre family. Missing my students. Missing my band mates. But my dear friend @andrewheringer kept texting me on a nearly daily basis “send me your songs!” Good grief he reassured me over a hundred times that he wants to hear my songs. So over the past two months Andrew worked on mixing the song in LA while I recorded at my home in Sacramento.
