The 2020 Outstanding Dietitian of the Year Award goes to Shira Hirshberg, MS, RDN, LDN! Shira received two anonymous nominations from her peers on the RIAND board for taking initiative in educating RI dietitians and relevant providers on weight stigma. Shira has provided ongoing leadership to the RIAND board and membership throughout the year in several ways. Shira has spearheaded several events and ideas that aim to further our profession and serve our members. Shira coordinated a successful weight stigma CEU event for health practitioners in Rhode Island. To our knowledge, this event was the first of its kind in RI and allowed clinicians from a variety of backgrounds (RDs, social workers, physicians, psychologists, etc.) to come together to discuss the critical questions surrounding weight stigma. The event had 80 attendees and was very well received by those who attended. Coordination and planning of events that discuss important topics such as this are what makes for an outstanding dietitian and sets an example for the future of our profession. During the surgery, the patient unexplainably starts to bleed profusely. The doctor checks all medical reports to see if he has overlooked something, and finds nothing amiss. No apparent causes, and also no blood thinners were being consumed by the patient.⁠ ⁠ The surgery gets done and the patient is wheeled back into the room. Later, the doctor brings up this episode and asks if he missed mentioning something. Deze afdeling kunnen we relatief eenvoudig op- of afschalen afhankelijk van het aantal coronapatiënten. Daarnaast zorgen we voor extra IC-bedden. Ook hebben we collegas van andere afdelingen opgeleid ter ondersteuning van onze IC- en SEH-verpleegkundigen. Zij werken naast de IC- en SEH-verpleegkundigen, en nemen taken van hen over. Jij helpt onze zorgverleners, artsen en verpleegkundigen het meest door verdere verspreiding van het virus te voorkomen. Blijf dus thuis bij klachten die passen bij het coronavirus en laat je testen, houd afstand en vermijd drukke plekken! Natuurlijk blijft het spannend, want niemand kan voorspellen hoe de komende tijd gaat verlopen. En daar maken we ons best zorgen over. 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐉𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓 When I started this fitness and nutrition thing, I realized fairly quickly that it was a lot harder than I anticipated — in fact, it felt nearly impossible  A few reasons ❌I was uneducated  ❌I lacked commitment and did not understand the word “consistency”  ❌I didn’t prioritize it  ❌I didn’t make it a habit What ended up happening was that in this area of my life I found myself not advancing one bit or getting slightly worse in it, yet not bad enough to make me want to take a massive turn Until at one point I started doing one thing consistently — waking up early to workout 4-5 days a week.  At first, we are conditioned to expect this massive outcome quickly. When we don’t see it that small change vanishes and it’s easy to fall back to what we knew was easier at the beginning — sleeping in —  But if you become part of that small percentage of people that says F*ck it, I am going to keep on going and see what happens, then the magic happens.  𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗣𝗢𝗪𝗘𝗥 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗬 𝗚𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗦 𝗮𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝟭% 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗮 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲. According to this if you do one small thing to change a habit or get better at something and you repeat that every day, after one year you will be 38 times better at making that happen   I can certainly say I was 38 times better at building training habits that are now is part of my weekly non-negotiables Here is a reality — we overwhelmingly underestimate what it takes to accomplish big goals and we overestimate what it takes to accomplish small little tasks We think doing something small will not matter so we don’t do it.  We start to believe that change can only happen if there is a massive visible outcome that happens quickly.  If you start to believe that there is more power in small improvements, you will master habits that will yield the results Now my question to you is simple… Where are the 1% improvements in your life? - @vivenutrition on Instagram

A major national study led by experts from Bristol and Nottingham has found that oral antibiotics are just as effective as intravenous antibiotics in killing a common germ that causes dangerous complications in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. The study looked at the effectiveness of the two types of treatment in tackling Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which causes a chronic destructive lung infection in CF patients and which cannot be eradicated unless it is caught in the early stages. Dr Simon Langton Hewer, a consultant respiratory paediatrician at UHBW, and chief investigator of the study with colleagues at the University of Nottingham, said: “Our study found that traditional oral antibiotics are just as effective as intravenous antibiotics, which means that CF patients who have a new Pseudomonas aeruginosa can be treated at home and saved the inconvenience of having to be admitted to hospital for treatment.” Adele Farrow’s daughter Niamh (pictured), who is aged 13 and who has cystic fibrosis, took part in the trial. Our Engineering Design course (listed as General Engineering ) has been ranked best in the country by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021! 🍾🥂🎉🎈 Five of our courses were included in the top ten this year.
