A common mistake with trying to train the sternal pec is to push the elbows straight out. - - - This puts more stress on the shoulder joint, coracobriachiallis, and decreases range of motion. Understand that the sternal fibers are going to extend along the top 3-4 inches of the sternum. - - - If you want to line up your arm path to maximally recruit these, you would want the insertion of your pec on the humerus to line up with the middle of that sternal pec origin. This will put the arms at a slightly lower position than the shoulder. Its still the widest pressing position, but is not elbows in line with the shoulder joint. - - - If you bring the arms up to parallel with the shoulders you will actually be misaligned with a large portion of the sternal fibers. This puts more stress on the coricobrachiallis, a smaller muscle that crosses the shoulder underneath the pec and bicep. If you have been staying in RPE ranges between 7-9 you may want to step things down a bit for your first couple of weeks back. Keeping an RPE of 5 or 6 can make a world of difference. Those extra 4-5 reps in reserve will allow you to practice the movements and still reap those muscle memory benefits. 2. Your training volume is also an important thing to keep in mind. A good general rule of thumb is to take the volume you would do at the peak of a training program, and cut it in half. Dont worry, you will be back to clanging and banging those high volume amounts before long. 3. Do not go in using completely new exercises. If you had a good periodized programming style with solid exercises selection before, take advantage of this by relearning the movements. Half of your training is your form and skill so using these familiar exercises will cut down the time it takes to get your groove back. Also, dont forget to bring those headphones.
