School looks different this year, but our commitment to safely serving the youth of the community remains. Our Boys & Girls Club’s Facilitated Learning Center currently has four socially distant classrooms with 10 students per room. Children follow their academic schedule, followed by after school activities after completing their schoolwork. From volunteering at a hospital to becoming a resident physician at a hospital! The pursuit of medicine seems so daunting for all of us. Between hours of research, volunteering, studying our ultimate goal is to one day become a physician. I still remember my first volunteer position as a front desk greeter at a hospital. I would see the residents and doctors thinking I would never reach that level. All I could focus on was doing well on my SAT, completing college and taking my MCAT. There are so many milestones on the journey to becoming a physician. It’s important to celebrate each one and realize it’s an important step to realizing your ultimate dream! Mark 11:24 🔸 I want to thank everyone for their prayers, uplifting thoughts, and positive vibes. I believe in the power of positivity. And, even though it has been difficult to stay positive over the last two months, the faithfulness and positivity of those around me, especially Mandi Byford, has given me a guardrail of faith so that I didnt swerve of the road towards the ditch of depression. All of your comments and messages have really helped to fortify me and my faith. 🔸 The good news is that I am having my thyroid removed next Thursday to remove the cancer (we named him Nigel the nodule) from my body. The surgeon will also remove some lymph nodes to biopsy. If the biopsy comes back clean, I will be cancer free! (if not, Ill have to do some radiation treatment.) I have faith that, either way, itll just be the next step in the process of healing. 🔸 For almost two months, Ive spent the majority of my time in bed or on the couch. I have been getting exhausted from just walking my dogs down the street. Not being able to move my body and get out of my head has been a real challenge. But dealing with those challenges and going through this process is giving me access to so much insight. I know that Ill be able to use my experiences, challenges, and triumphs to serve others in an even bigger way! I am hoping to be 100% and back to teaching, practicing, and living all out Byford-style by October! Since first year labs are all online this term, Sue has been working hard to ensure that the labs will still run smoothly, and that all of this years students still have the best learning experience possible. . We’ve got some GREAT news, some bad news and some encouraging news. ❤️ Today was my 3 month check-up with Dr. Merkle (pictured holding me) at the oncology department at LSU Veterinary Hospital. I was checked over from head to tail, with some x-rays and ultrasounds. Here’s the GREAT NEWS: the scans are clear! No new cancer growths! The bad news: there’s a small melanoma on my mouth. But we’re not gonna focus on that. Instead, we will focus on the encouraging news: we will have the melanoma removed soon and all will be well. So no worries... I’ll be okay. ☺️ I was sedated a little, but I’m home resting now. Peace Corps Volunteers serve where they are asked to go, under conditions of hardship if necessary, and with the flexibility needed for effective service. After returning back to the U.S. from Panama this past March (following the global evacuation of Volunteers), now Returned PCV Isabel was still feeling a strong call to service and decided to take her passion and talent to Peace Corps’ domestic sister agency, @AmeriCorps. My time with Peace Corps Panama strengthened my passion to serve, and the far-reaching impact of COVID-19 made me want to serve those communities disproportionately affected by the pandemic in the United States. I am a black professional stuntwoman and I am so proud of who that makes me along with what my career path entails. I love what I do for a living even though sometimes the job can be super sketch for various reasons. In those situations it honestly takes a lot to calm myself, take a deep breath and let all of my fear, anxiety and doubt go while appearing to be completely unbothered on the outside. I am human just like everyone else however, I rely heavily on the fact that I train my ass off, I can assess and react to situations fairly quickly, I have a lot of faith in myself and God and I am typically surrounded by my stunt brothers and sisters who with one reassuring look in my eye and a slight nod of the head can make me feel invincible and like I’ve absolutely got this. Please note: “this” can literally be anything lol...Being a stuntwoman has changed me in a very positive way as a person and I am beyond grateful to be the woman I am today. There have been more and more roles for black actors and actresses which in theory mean we as black stunt performers should have more opportunity to shine! I am thankful to all of the stunt coordinators who have chosen me as a black stuntwoman to double their black actresses and fill ND spots. Thank you to the actresses I’ve worked with who‘ve made coming to work fun and rewarding. I have posted a few of the actresses I’ve had the pleasure to double. It’s great to know all of you strong black women and I’m so very proud of all you’ve been able to accomplish in your careers thus far! Three years ago around this time, I was spending every night at this hospital bedside next to my Dad. He was battling cancer, he fought it like the true champion he was. It was the the extended family at Sloan Kettering that kept me positive through the most difficult period of my life. Spending my nights here and then rushing to Bully every morning to get it up and running so I could open up my first restaurant in time for him to see. Dad never got to eat with me at Bully, but I feel his presence with me everyday. Ninja Nerds!! As you all know we just started posting videos again recently. The reason we were not posting very much was multifactorial. One of the reasons was obviously due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the need for social distancing. The other reason is that I was finishing up my clinical rotations in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine in different states. I also was preparing to take my PANCE which I have recently passed and am now a Board Certified Physician Assistant. I am now looking for jobs in Critical Care, Trauma and Emergency Medicine. Me, Rob, and Kristin will be back at it again making videos for your enjoyment and learning experience. I am so thankful for all of you Ninja Nerds support during these past two years while in PA school looking at all your extremely kind emails, messages and comments gave me the strength to keep pushing, learning and becoming the best practitioner I can be for my future patients. Heading in to work today feels heavy. Isolation with my kids has been a beautiful reminder of family connection and my littles that I love to watch grow, play, and even fight 🤣. But for me, and for Derrick, there’s another side of this season. The side where we leave isolation and the safety it creates, and choose to go where we will be in harms way in order to take care of those who need it. Covid positives are now in my hospital. Supplies are dangerously low. Derrick is working extra shifts to cover those fireman out now with symptoms and in quarantine. This dance between peace and anxiety has been surreal. It’s a period of anxiety where we wait to see what this pandemic will look like- especially as we watch those countries ahead of us fight this. At work, I’m surrounded by people who have also chosen to serve others medically through this time. I’ve been more connected with my colleagues in other areas of the country, and I have felt a deep sense of community and camaraderie that I haven’t felt ever since becoming a PA. I’m humbled and deeply grateful for the hours of preparation and behind the scenes work that all healthcare workers are putting in, that no one can see. We prepare and guess at what’s coming, and we wait. It’s also been an incredible time watching people and communities come together to support each other, small businesses, the marginalized, and humanity as a whole. I’ve seen more smiles from neighbors out on walks this week thank ever before! We knew what we were signing up for going in to these careers, but the reality of it has been intense. This is our part of fighting this battle, showing up to work for those who are sick and vulnerable. Let’s all do our part in this battle; even if staying home feels small- it’s significant and will protect so many. Help lower the impending burden on the healthcare system, and help protect healthcare workers as we choose to fight this pandemic on the front lines. I just finished my Internal Medicine Sub-Internship at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, GA, last week. My partner was Mohammed Ajwah, a third-year from the Athens campus of our medical school. Meet Dr. Janice Lee!! Dr. Janice Lee is currently the Clinical Director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial research center at the National Institutes of Health. Before joining NIDCR in August 2013, she was the Professor and Vice Chair at the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Lee earned a DDS and an MS from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Dentistry and an MD from Harvard Medical School. She completed a residency in OMS at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard University and a two-year research fellowship at NIDCR’s Craniofacial and Skeletal Diseases Branch. Her research is focused on craniofacial anomalies and regeneration and has published over 70 peer-reviewed journal articles, numerous abstracts and poster presentations, and several book chapters. Dr. Lee was the AAOMS Chair of Special Committees on Women in OMS. She was the host of the first AAOMS Women SIG and was also the first keynote speaker at University of Michigan’s Women in OMS symposium. She is the first OMS leader at the NIH and also the first to establish a craniofacial anomalies research program. Additionally, she is the first woman OMS to receive the AAOMS Gies Award in 53 years. She is an avid advocate of women in OMS and has published several articles on the subject in JOMS. What a crazy last two months for me. With moving, changing bases, driving from Arizona to Seattle with a uhaul ,working (4 )six day blocks back to back with one day off in between each,celebrating my one-year anniversary, completing ground school recurrent certification yesterday 🙌 and then beginning a new 4 day trip starting today. As a 1st gen immigrant doc, I am familiar with poverty and culture. “Racial minorities- all come from non-Western cultures where most people seek to adjust to outside conditions rather than seeking change, —Westerners are moralistic about social order, demanding that behavior respect universal principles, while in the non-West norms are less rigid and depend mostly on the expectations of others. “. Unfortunately, I am not surprised of a “research piece” designed to illustrate why people of color are fundamentally not enough to take advantage of the professional and social opportunities presented to them. But everything I have become is because of the change I seek and bc of other POCs. NOT because I took advantage of “western world opportunities”. POCs showed me I could become who I am in spite of opportunities for western people whose lever of poverty and culture were very different from mine. . I owe everything I am to my grit, to my Latina power house family who never doubted my potential and showed me that there was no limit. . To my Black female English teacher in high school who saw a new immigrant kid who dared to take AP English and constantly reminded me to be patient with myself bc with hard work I would accomplish anything I set my mind to. . To my Latino pre Med friend, an incredibly talented surgeon now, who in undergrad showed me there was room for me in medicine and encouraged me through every step of my application/ med school/ residency application. . To the amazing Latinx physicians I met in #lmsa and social media that showed me #sisepuede. Because of them, I get to care for the people I have had the honor to serve in this pandemic and young career. . Not because of my “Western” high school adviser who said I should reconsider college and go for a technical degree because -as a Latina- I would become pregnant soon, my male pre Med adviser who said my GPA and MCAT were not high enough for med school and I should give up, my Med-school advisor who had no idea how to help me study for boards, or the racially biased institutions who made me feel I didn’t belong every step. Cassie, Public Relations Business Specialist with Renown Health came down with COVID-19 in late June. From June through July Cassie fought the virus, leaving her very fatigued. If you need a good cry, I had to share this heartfelt story. Yesterday @flagnyc was contacted by the husband of a nurse that traveled all the way from ARKANSAS to NYC as part of the 900+ nurses heading to Roosevelt the 350-Bed Temporary Hospital on Roosevelt Island. This hospital hadnt been opened for 10 years, they were expected to transform it into a Covid19 hospital basically overnight! She is there with her team with NO COFFEE, NO FOOD, NO SNACK PANTRY, NO MUSIC/ TVs ...it is silent there.... Within 10 minutes I was on the phone with the only place still open on Roosevelt Island @nisikitchen and sent over Bagels and Coffee...the owner of this father/son restaurant was beyond grateful, the husband said the nurses were in tears just thinking about food...this is why I am doing this. When the results for my COVID test came two days later, doctors were doubtful about my reaction. I told them not to worry since Im a doctor myself. I knew that I could handle whatever the situation might be. Thats when they revealed that I was COVID-19 positive. As soon as the news spread, many of our neighbours panicked. The city administration council put up posters outside our door. People clicked photos and shot videos of my house. They shared it with my name, address, and personal details on different WhatsApp groups. Since people love to gossip on WhatsApp, ugly stories about me started circulating in social media. Even the news media put out the wrong kinds of stories. Despite going straight to the hospital from the airport, I had to be the victim of social media hatred. I didnt even go home to collect my personal belongings to make sure that I didnt transmit the virus to anyone. Thankfully, I started recovering and, after a few days, tested negative. But the hounding didnt stop after I was back home. I knew that going back home will be an unpleasant experience. Therefore, to avoid attention from neighbours and media, I insisted on going home late at night. Not just me but my entire family had to experience the harassment. My younger brother didnt step out of the house for two months. Neither did I. I would only step out during the night to avoid people. When I step out, I can still sense the eerie stares and gossip. It is like a bad dream - Im all alone. People refuse to hear when I plead to them that I didnt do anything wrong. The only way we can fight this pandemic is with the right balance of precaution and empathy. Yes, we need to be careful. But we also shouldnt let our fears overpower humanity within us”. Ordinary glass panels can act as solar panels when a layer of nanoparticles is sandwiched between two panes. This could help us take advantage of solar energy in cities where space for solar panels may be limited. . “If we’ve done our job, no one will even know that they’re there,” says Hunter McDaniel at UbiQD, a materials manufacturing firm in the US. He and his colleagues have developed transparent solar panels that are indistinguishable from regular glass. . Test installations, involving panels that are 1 square metre in size, are under way in buildings in the US and the Netherlands. The panels have a power conversion efficiency of 3.6 per cent, a measure of how much sunlight is converted into electricity. Opaque solar panels, in comparison, have efficiencies between 15 and 20 per cent. . These transparent panels are made from two layers of glass glued together with a polymer that contains nanoparticles known as quantum dots. With a core of copper indium sulphide and a shell of zinc sulphide, these quantum dots are tiny semiconductors that can manipulate light. . When the nanoparticles are excited by exposure to UV light, they release photons that travel along the transparent panel towards its edge. The perimeter is fitted with solar cells, which convert the photons into electrical current. To see many pronounce this pandemic as overblown and hear increasing calls to reopen our country. And then this weekend to see NYC’s parks crowded with people without masks. It leaves you feeling discouraged. I promise you. It is not overblown. It has had a very real impact. Especially on our family. Over the last 2 months, I’ve lived in constant fear about the safety of my sister, brother, and father who are all NYC frontline physicians. I’ve watched my father and sister fall sick to the virus while treating patients with insufficient PPE. My mom was forced to move out once my dad became ill. And my sister and I both moved home to do everything in our power to prevent him from being hospitalized. Simultaneously, I was redeployed to work on the front lines in a Brooklyn COVID unit. Which has entailed long hours, caring for critical patients, watching coresidents fall sick, dealing with unexpected death, and communicating to families that their loved ones have passed. And then this past weekend, I lost my grandfather to a 6 week battle with COVID. And it has left me feeling guilty. That I couldn’t completely be there for him. That the last time he saw me I was covered head to toe in PPE. And that the last time I held his hand it was through a glove. This pandemic has hit our family hard. It has been physically and emotionally exhausting. And for those who still dont believe it. Yes, the devastation of COVID has been very real. I get it. I too want more than ever for everything to return to normal. But I am concerned with summer around the corner and a hasty reopening of cities, that we are on the verge of a second wave. Yes, we cant all isolate forever. But when we reopen, let’s all be smarter about it. We stay at work for you. Please stay at home (within reason) for us. Let’s talk about vaginismus! I’ve gotten so many messages recently on this. Unfortunately I cannot give advice on social media. However I would like to share some education! What is primary vaginismus? Primary vaginismus is when vaginal penetration has never been achieved ever. So this means you have never been able to put in a tampon, have penetrative intercourse or digital penetration. What is secondary vaginismus? Secondary vaginismus is when vaginal penetration has happened before, but is no longer possible, potentially due to factors such as gynecologic surgery, abuse, trauma, menopause or radiation. When people have pain with intercourse this is called Dyspareunia- just the medical term for it. It is often confused with vaginismus. People can have painful intercourse for many reasons that are not vaginismus (like endometriosis). Vaginismus is an involuntary tightening of the vaginal muscles which makes penetration difficult or impossible. Many people who have vaginismus often have a fear of vaginal penetration and decreased sexual desire related to penetration. Which is not surprising! My vaginismus patients are a motivated bunch seeking help! I am incredibly proud of my patients when they make progress with their treatment! Its daunting to work with a therapist, use dilators and suppositories and have injections to an area that is sensitive. To all the women struggling with vaginismus do not give up!! I see so much success so often! It’s truly amazing to see when women are able to have a sexually satisfying experience with or without penetration! (Which is key to remember that penetrative intercourse is not the only way to have sex.) You are not broken! Mental health has been a big topic in Bollywood recently after the suicide of a popular actor. Though people seem to “have it all” most of us don’t. Especially now. As an allergist, mental health comes up more often that I thought it would. I’ve had a few patients tell me they think their asthma is flaring as they are feeling more shortness of breath and chest tightness. Upon further questioning, I find out the inhaler isn’t helpful and they are feeling anxious. Let’s be mindful of these heightened emotional times. Zoe Welham developed an interest in bowel cancer while she was working on a complex scientific research project in graduate school. As the inaugural PhD recipient of The Penn Foundation Scholarship, Zoe’s research will provide valuable new knowledge regarding the biological rules that govern bowel polyp growth – something which is still not fully understood. Comparing the microbiomes of polyps at different risk levels for developing bowel cancer, Zoe’s research aims to better understand how the gut microbiome influences the growth of bowel polyps. Research that she hopes will ultimately lead to a reduction in bowel cancer. Zoe will work under the supervision of the Lawrence Penn Chair of Bowel Cancer Research, Professor Mark Molloy. The majority of funding comes from national charity Bowel Cancer Australia, which has committed $6.4 million to establish the Lawrence Penn Chair of Bowel Cancer Research and will be supported by additional funds of $4 million available to the University to advance research into bowel cancer. Big shout to @thebrosen 🙏🏽 ・・・ I got the call to start ASAP at the Nightingale and within 48hrs I was living at a hotel and working a 13hr shift. 2 days, 2 nights, 3 days off. Repeat. It was so bizarre, no natural daylight and the lights were on 24/7. Time warped. If you looked up, the ExCel could be really disorienting with its high ceilings. It was this massive reality check each time. Communication was such an issue too. No one can see your facial expressions or hear you clearly because of the face-masks, visors and sheer space, so at the induction they had taught us scuba diving hand signals, which came in handy in some emergencies. Another challenge was telling the patients apart. They all had the same disease, connected to same ventilators and machines to support their organs. One of the nice (and helpful!) things they’d done though, was to put a picture of them and messages from their family at the head of each bed - it definitely helped. You’re talking to these patients all the time too. You have to do that, because it humanises them. If you’re not doing that, you’re not doing medicine, you’re just doing science. I think it was my fourth shift when I was looking after a patient who met the criteria for transfer out. Taken off ventilator support the day before and well enough to be on a ward for rehabilitation, so I put the recommendation forward, and they became the first patient we discharged. It was really exciting to pull that together and see how they planned things given the media spotlight of the Nightingale. As a healthcare professional working alongside the consultant, our responsibility was to advocate for the patients best interests despite the media presence. Patients were sick when they arrived, but in the end around 70% survived for transfer out. There will always be questions raised about if NHS Nightingale was actually needed, but I like to think it was an incredible demonstration of what’s possible. If I had one word of advice to new grads on how to improve patient compliance - it is to EDUCATE! 📖 Even speaking in laymans term, patients often are overwhelmed by the information given to them and the eye is quite a complicated part of the body. ✨ Here are my top three things to help you get the message across: 1) Eye Models - everyone loves 3D models, and it helps a patient understand where exactly the problem is located! (Is a cataract a film over the eye or a clouding in the lens inside?) 2) Diagnostic Imaging- a picture is worth a thousand words. Describe a retinal tear in someones eye isnt the same as showing them the tear! Likewise, imaging can be expanded to anterior problems. 3) Brochures- you might think thats old school and will just go to waste, but people do glance at them, especially your elderly patients! Woah! Talk about an inspiration! 🌟 Medina is a mother of 2, a nurse and a teacher. Her husband traveled to Nepal earlier this year and was supposed to return back home to the US at the beginning of summer. However, due to the covid pandemic, the airport in Nepal is still closed and all international flights from there to US are still canceled. Medina has been working and providing for her family by herself for 9 months. She goes to work everyday to look after her elderly patients, then comes home to look after her family. She never complains and does it all with a smile. On her days off, she also tutors students who are studying nursing via Zoom video conference call and provides free mentorship and advice. Medina is a strong, hard-working woman and loving mother. She is an immigrant who believes in the American dream. 🌟 Medina, you are our hero!! 💥Tips for Success in the New Academic Year💥 ___ 🙌🏽Happy Tuesday ! As the new academic year begins across the country (virtually or in person), we wanted to share a few tips that can be helpful to succeed over the upcoming academic year👣 ___ 1️⃣Stay Organized: Whether you are an expert studier or whether you are an all night crammer, everyone studies differently. Depending on the class or program you are in, cramming may not always work. The more organized you can be, whether through your computer or through a paper planner, the easier itll be to get stuff done in a timely manner; whether you use paper based or computer based sticky notes to make a list of things to do, this will help you stay on top of whatever is going on‼️ . 2️⃣Check and use your calendar regularly: As someone who also has a ton of stuff going on, it certainly helps me to enter stuff into my calendar and set reminders! This allows me to ensure that I dont lose track of various tasks, endeavors and meetings. Even though I remember most things, I definitely check my calendar often to avoid missing important deadlines . 3️⃣Do a little bit every day: There’s always going to be stuff to do and you can’t get it all done in one sitting. I wish I could go back and tell myself to just take a minute and do a little bit every day. I really try to spread the wealth of work across my days during the week, prioritizing things that are the most time sensitive . 4️⃣ Find resources that suit your study style; no matter what discipline you are studying, there are a zillion text books out there. You don’t need to buy or borrow all of them ! Check out texts or other review sources that allow you to retain information and are easy to mentally manage . 5️⃣Make time for yourself: I wish I could go back to tell myself to prioritize my own well being (physically and mentally). There is always more to do, more to read, more to get involved with, but make sure that you take time every week to focus on you and what is important to you. I may be a surgeon for a living but LEMME TELL YOU ABOUT MY MAMA. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -Growing up she sewed our clothes when we couldn’t afford them.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -She stuffed envelopes to help us get by.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -She cleaned facilities to ensure that we had food on the table.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -She cooked incredible meals to make sure that we had family time.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -She is always the first we call with problems.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -She is always the first to point us to our God as the source of our hope in times of struggle.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -She went BACK to school while raising 4 children to become an RN. Throwback to a couple of very excited first year dental students 😂 Alot has changed since my first year of dental school. I remember it being such an exciting time in my life everything felt surreal, I was so glad to finally be a dental student after the arduous application process 😅 I really feel for you guys that have to go through this ‘COVID era’ of dental school. I’m not going to lie having online lectures during your first few weeks isn’t ideal. It can be difficult to make friends and actually feel immersed into the course. However, do not fret. The the future may feel uncertain at the moment and many new changes and modifications have been introduced into dental practice, but you guys are going to be the most equipped to face these situations if anything like this happens again. It’s one of those things that you just have to embrace. I hope things start to feel more normal over the next few months and you guys get to enjoy the rest of your time a dental school! If you have just started first year or returned back to dental school I would love to know how you have you been finding it so far? We are six months into the new abnormal. Everything has changed. Everyone has concerns. We are all stressed out, confused. No one seems to be happy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This whole thing? Its just exhausting. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ive been immensely fortunate to be in an office that has remained open, continuing to see kids throughout the months of turmoil. As the proverbial dust has settled, however, the reality of our new situation is taking its hold. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I am really starting to miss seeing my patients’ faces. I miss seeing their parents faces. I miss them seeing mine. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I understand and value the importance of masking up for our communities. Within the medical community, however, I see mask-wearing as a normal part of our wardrobe for a long, long time. I’m just feeling bummed out. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Yes, I want a successful and safe vaccine. I want more accurate and faster testing. I want reliable therapeutics. But when will it feel like we have reached the other side? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When I can see my patients whole faces again.
