A #throwbackthursday from 2005: my first endurance road bike race, the “Furnace Creek 508.” This is a 508 miles (820 kms) race in Southern Paiute and Western Shoshone lands going through Death Valley, northern Mojave Desert and surrounding areas in California-Nevada. 🚴🏾♀️ I rode in a 2-person team (#TeamCoonhound) with Bruce Gungle plus support crew members Sean and Cory. Greetings from Benton Hot Springs! We want to reaffirm our dedication to providing a safe and clean place for you and our staff during this current situation with the coronavirus. It has been and still is our top priority. While our remote facilities, generally provide ample space and limited public interaction, we our stepping up our cleaning efforts in the midst of this situation. Currently there is little evidence that indicates the coronavirus can survive in outside elements. Nevertheless, we continue to clean each tub after every use with a strong bleach solution. We will disinfect all portable toilets daily. We have just completed deep cleaning in all the rooms, houses and common areas. This situation is fluid and we will reassess our procedures and operations as conditions warrant. We understand everyone is in a different place when it comes to this situation. However, we would like to reiterate that the director of the CDC stated that the risk is low and encouraged people to go about their life with a common sense approach. True story: This past June I started my Shasta hike a couple hours or so too late and turned around at the top of Avy Gulch. I took the next day off to recover and checked out nearby Castle Crags State Park and Lake Siskiyou, then successfully summited Shasta the following day! This is probably going to be the only big thing I do in 2020, so Im glad I made it count! . We lugged a dozen full-frame cameras and two dozen lenses into the woods and up mountains, and then pointed literally all the cameras at the same subject from miles apart, and took 15,000+ photos while 50 people climbed down the Half Dome Cables with headlamps. . The last bits of light coming down from “outer space.” It was one of the longest days I’ve spent on the wall outside. It was also one of the first times I had feelings of doubt pretty much the whole time I was climbing.
