The Greek minister for Asylum and Migration Mitarakis announced in the press on Wednesday that the government will close Pikpa camp by the end of October. Pikpa camp is an open, community-run place where some of the most vulnerable refugees in the island are hosted. For years, many actors have come together in Pikpa camp to support some of the most vulnerable people in the island. The news of the planned closure of Pikpa camp comes after the earlier announcement by the government that Kara Tepe camp, also accommodating vulnerable people, must be closed by the end of December. We reiterate: As long as Europe and the Greek government refuse to provide dignified accommodation and reception to refugees, we will keep defending Pikpa, now more than ever. This is not a struggle to defend a place. This is a struggle to defend solidarity, dignity, equality and inclusion. This is a struggle to resist the toxic agenda of segregation, containment, degradation, repression, xenophobia and hate. We know that we can count on support from all across Europe - across organisations, institutions, politicians and individuals - and we will mobilise this support with all our power. Decongestion of the island is the only solution, combined with keeping up capacity to receive people in dignified accommodation like Kara Tepe, Pikpa and existing apartments for the people who newly arrive in the island. The new, inhumane camp is unacceptable. The protection, safety and well-being of the residents at Pikpa camp is the first priority. We will not accept that they will be transferred to the new camp. One week ago I wrapped my last day at @we.are.alight - and it’s taken several days (and I’m sure many more) to wrap my mind around the bigness of this moment. The past almost 6 years have been one wild, wondrous, action-packed, joy-filled, and sometimes incredibly challenging adventure. I’ve had the privilege of working on issues close to my heart and sharing the stories of so many different wonderful people I’ve met along the way, who have made navigating those challenges worth it and then some. Cócteles molotovs, barricadas, sogas en las calles, toda una rebelión popular, el estado ya no es el único que ejerce el monopolio sobre la violencia. No solo se trata de la explosión, sino del régimen podrido y sectario, del desempleo, de la inflación, de la inestabilidad en la región, del imperialismo acechante. Las masas ya han conseguido su primera victoria, echar al Gobierno. Aún así no es más que una maniobra desesperada del régimen, cambiar un gobierno por otro afín. Pero las masas los quieren a todos fuera. Las movilizaciones y la lucha se extenderán por todos los países árabes, empezando por Iraq que ya ha retomado las calles. Por supuesto que cuando se presentan hechos como este, tanto el gobierno municipal, provincial y nacional, como así también los responsables de ejercer el poder judicial, no deben mirar para otro lado, ya que son quienes tienen el deber de cuidar a la población. Contrariamente, este año, confirmamos rotundamente que estas personas son tan responsables como el empresariado ejecutor: No les importa el bienestar popular y arrasan con naturaleza, salud, y vida, sin remordimientos. Es por esto que no nos sorprendimos en estos días cuando nos enteramos que el gobierno nacional planea modificar la Ley de Bosques, para que la misma sea menos restrictiva y así poder continuar arrasando con la mayor cantidad de hectáreas de vida posible. Hace tiempo que, excusándose con la reactivación de la economía, desde estos sectores de poder no dan lugar a discusiones que tienen como objetivo el verdadero cuidado del pueblo, a partir de actividades de generación de dinero federales e integrales, que verdaderamente podrían generar un cambio en el porcentaje de pobreza nacional y en la preservación de la salud pública. We decide to watch lectures and learn for the 10 days and then stop until the next mosque program. We think about Imam Hussain, his companions and the women and children for the 10 days and then we send them to the back of our minds. Someone beautifully put it, “the tragedy doesn’t end on the 10th of Muharram - that’s when it begins”. It is now that Imam Zaynul Abideen (AS), the ladies and children are being taken captive and they now have even more hardship to endure. 💥Imam Hussain (AS) did not sacrifice his life for us to remember him for only 10 days throughout the year💥 That being said, we’re going to continue making highlight videos for the amazing and insightful lectures we’ve had this year. Vanessa Guillen was a 20 year old US soldier who went missing at the Fort Hood army base on April 22nd. Before she disappeared, she told her family that she was being sexually assaulted by a sergeant but didn’t feel safe reporting it. ⠀ Fort Hood didn’t take her disappearance seriously and it’s heartbreaking that its taken over 2 months that we finally found out what happened to her. She was bludgeoned to death with a hammer by another soldier Aaron Robinson who has now committed suicide, but his accomplice and girlfriend Cecily Aguilar has been arrested and charged for helping dispose of the body. They burned Vanessa’s body, chopped her up into pieces with a machete and poured concrete over her. No one should ever have to go through such a horrific and brutal death. ⠀ The military is supposed to protect their country and its people, but what does it say if they can’t even protect their own people? Many suspect there are more people involved and responsible for Vanessa’s death and cover-up that need to be held accountable. This is just one of the many tragic stories out there. 💔 The struggle in Lebanon for designers and the design sector as a whole has been long and arduous already. The recent and massive devaluation of the Lebanese pound has made it impossible for designers to be able to afford the inflated costs demanded for materials, and the state of the economy has further driven down the existing business for local design, forcing galleries to close. Designers have few places to exhibit, and little to show in any case. Combined, the effect has been to generate significant hardships for everyone within the sector. On August 4th in Beirut, Lebanese creatives lost their studios and saw their homes devastated. We need to start by helping them return to basics – by reequipping them and providing them with the means to work. Myself and together with you must continue to provide support by identifying global opportunities through which their work and their message will find greater exposure around the world. For sure, there is no better – nor more urgent – a time for patrons and the design community to come together to breathe life into the sector in order to keep it alive and to release Lebanese talent and creativity. They say kindness is magic and can change the world. Parul Dua (@_raysofhappiness_) decided to sprinkle some of this magic around. Earlier this year, Parul began serving sherbat to construction workers, maids and her watchman, to help them combat the heat. She soon met their children and decided to help them with their education. Parul started by teaching them basics and giving them stationery. Over time, she noticed that these kids were fast learners and extremely enthusiastic. She began to push them; they learnt about the importance of Independence Day and she gave them different kinds of books to study and read. From helping each of them with the English language to sponsoring the complete education of two children in her class, Parul has showcased how one person can make a change. Besides teaching, Parul gave her students soaps and masks during the lockdown because safety first. Her next goal is to set up a parent-teacher meeting so that she can communicate the importance of regular attendance and education. Once the worst affected country in Europe, Italy has learnt its lesson and adapted to deal with coronavirus. ⁠ ⁠ While countries such as Spain, France and the UK are suffering an increase in Covid-19 cases, Italy has managed to keep the disease under control. ⁠ ⁠ What has it done differently? Experts have highlighted three main reasons for Italy’s resilience.⁠ ⁠ 👉 First-mover advantage⁠ As one of the first countries to face a high number of cases and deaths, Italy’s government and health system have had more time to plan a post-lockdown response and the lifting of restrictions has been more gradual ⁠ ⁠ 👉 High public compliance and stricter enforcement⁠ Compared with places such as the UK, Italy has a higher public acceptance of restrictions such as compulsory mask wearing in shops. Es momento de hacerle honor a este día y no con flores y felicitaciones, sino con lucha, una lucha dura, de esas en las que cuando se tira una pared se levantan dos castillos, de esas que cuando crees que ganas una batalla, descubres que la guerra ni siquiera ha empezado. Hoy es un día importante. Hoy es el Día de Acción Global por el Acuerdo de Escazú – a un mes de su entrada en vigor. Este Acuerdo nace del mismo impulso del que nace la Agenda 2030, la Conferencia de Naciones Unidas sobre el Desarrollo Sostenible (Rio+20) en 2012. La Agenda 2030 es una agenda cuyo objetivo es cumplir al año 2030 con las 169 metas de los 17 Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS), tratando transversalmente objetivos como la Pobreza (1) y el Hambre (2) hasta la Producción y Consumo (12) y el Cambio Climático (13). El Acuerdo de Escazú – nombre proveniente de la ciudad donde fue adoptado – cumple la función de vincular a los países en su rol de garantes de Derechos Humanos. Este acuerdo entiende que la vida se desarrolla sobre la tierra y que para que cualquier forma de vida prospere, necesita de un medioambiente sano sobre el cual cultivarla. Y lo hace desde 3 pilares fundamentales: derecho de acceso a la información, a la participación y a la justicia en temas medio ambientales, además de buscar garantizar la protección de quienes defienden los territorios – en la región más peligrosa del mundo para hacerlo.
