On Wednesday evening just after dusk, the International Space Station will fly directly over Orlando, will be visible to anyone in the Southeast, and provide a nice break in these long days as it races through space at 17,100 miles per hour -- which is about five miles a second (nearly as fast I drove in high school). Watching it is always a fun activity for families and all you have to do is look at this map to see where it will be and when. Follow the path of the arrows and then look at the time in the 24-hour format. If you live within the circle (and the skies are clear) just watch for a very bright star moving steadily across the sky from the southwest to the northeast. Week 11 of MappingAtoZ: Kevo, Finland 🇫🇮 There hasn’t been an easier letter to pick a place for than K... Kevo Research Station Now this may seem like a pretty random choice to most, but for the few who have had the chance to visit know it’s magic. For me, Kevo was a place for research, albeit amateur. It was the study area of my undergrad dissertation. Spending a couple of weeks trudging though 4ft of snow, collecting data on the snow pack and the environment over, certainly left me with a lot of memories. I wasn’t sure how to represent this unique arctic environment, the map I settled on was ‘My Journey’ across this valley. Over seven days I spanned the valley collecting data at 65 locations, these are my transects and their elevation profiles between the 6th and 12th March 2016. I tried to work on some styling here that shows the routes fading into the white snowy hilltops and cutting over the icy lake surface. A broad low pressure system located over the eastern Florida Panhandle is producing disorganized shower activity. The low is forecast to move southward to southwestward and emerge over the northeastern Gulf of Mexico later today. Once the system is over water, environmental conditions are expected to be conducive for tropical cyclone formation, and a tropical depression is likely to develop by late Wednesday or Thursday while the system moves westward across the northern Gulf of Mexico. Regardless of whether or not a tropical cyclone forms, this system has the potential to produce heavy rainfall along portions of the northern and eastern U.S. Gulf Coast later this week. As of the 8pm EDT Advisory: #HurricaneFlorence continues to weaken, but remains at powerful category 3 storm with winds of 115mph moving NW at 16 mph.
