The last 24 hours have been a whirlwind. Yesterday my grandfather, my Da, sailed his last sail and peacefully passed at 90 years of age. He showed up. He fought for the little guy. He was a notorious imp who flipped pancakes at 5.30am for the Brunswick Street Mission, poked you in your ribs in the middle of a church service, and who would convince you to empty your pockets into the Salvation Army pot each Christmas, bouyed up by a handful of his own twentys. He told me to take everything seriously, except for myself. I think it stuck. He started each conversation by asking where in Cape Breton you were from. It didnt matter if you were an Islander or not. If you werent, he would offer to drive you back to Gods Country himself. He has gone back to Gods Country at peace and with love. He is sailing his last endless ocean on the perfect tack, with the perfect wind. Ayer saliste de 8 hs y media de cirujía a los gritos y queriéndote sacar todo y no lo podíamos creer, sos un toro bebé, te la bancas te como el mejor, ya las palabras me están quedando chicas. Gracias a todos x el amor rezos cariños, velas, reikis y energías positivas, tuvo una operación muy buena según su cirujano, asique una felicidad inmensa. Aún queda batalla x darle y pasito a pasito, pero este niño tiene poderes sobrenaturales, tiene a todos los seres de luz a su favor y como ya dije otras veces, es gracias a esa red Avatar de amor y apoyo q nos brindan amigos, familia , colegas y conocidos de amigos de amigos de amigos jejeje es increíble... I debated whether or not to post these photos but decided to share and express what a very humbling experience I had on August 15th while visiting El Paso Texas. After a team meeting where @o2shawn and I joined @beatalovesyoga and @yvetted143 in sharing love from the Nest to our local @origamiowl Family members, they invited us to join them in visiting the memorial representing all those who so tragically lost their lives on 8.3.19. I started walking the Memorial wall which seemed to spread out across the entire parking lot. Flowers, messages, candles, pictures and more were positioned as far as I could see. When I turned around and started to head back to the beginning I noticed our O2 Peeps circling up in preparation for what turned into a group prayer. As we linked together arm in arm, prayers were said by four different individuals. Even though my Language skills are limited, I was able to understand the prayer delivered solely in Spanish because of the power in how it was delivered. Over a week later as I type this message my thoughts are directed back to that moment and more importantly the love felt in that circle as people from all backgrounds and walks of life came together to pray for all those who are suffering during this time. THAT kind of love is needed now in this world more than ever. So I would invite you to continue what was started in that circle and take a moment today, tomorrow, or whenever you finally read this to reach out to someone who is hurting and show them the love! Always loving, always smiling, always selfless, always a source of strength. I feel a strange dichotomy of emotions today. Deep sadness at the loss of my Nani yet extreme happiness and gratitude that I got to experience her unconditional love for the past 38 years. Up until very very recently words like blessed and angel sounded like religious mumbo jumbo to me. Something people said to make themselves feel better. But as I grow older, wiser and spiritually grounded i realize the true significance of what these words mean, not some deity in the sky but people that love us. Today I can say with every fibre of my being that I believe truly and wholeheartedly that I was beyond blessed to be born her granddaughter and there is an angel up there watching out for me and everyone that she loved. Her courage, her silent strength, the grace and dignity with which she conducted herself, her selflessness, her deep capacity for love and empathy and I could go on and on. These are just few of the things I would like to emulate, in short I want to be just like her. I have a long way to go before I achieve these but always have her as a guiding light. She lived an extremely blessed but by no means an easy life. Through it all, the many many high highs and very low lows, she remained calm and steadfast, never complained, no why me, never begrudged her own life or held onto a grudge against another. Those who know us well know that not everyone in the family has been blessed with this natural calm of hers. We can be fiery, led by anger, particularly me and I remember her words urging me to be calm and handle myself maturely. I promise here today that from today until forever I will never ever stop trying to be better, for her. There are so many things about her that I will miss... Her haath ka Khanna particularly the kadhi and rajma. They will never taste like that again. Her smile that greeted us the minute we would arrive and the tears that would flow quietly everytime we left. The first phone call on every birthday or anniversary. Keeping tabs on all her grandchildren on Instagram, so damn cool. But above all her deep, unconditional and never wavering love. ♥️ - @avantikamalik18 on Instagram

Tra le più alte espressioni dell’artigianato della nostra Isola, il processo di produzione della seta di Orgosolo è probabilmente quella più singolare ed affascinante. La produzione della seta ad Orgosolo, appartiene dunque al patrimonio storico e culturale del paese ormai da numerosi secoli ed è da sempre stata finalizzata alla tessitura de “su lionzu”, la benda del costume tradizionale, tessuta con della seta grezza prodotta e lavorata da alcune esperte donne del paese. Lallevamento dei bachi da seta ha solitamente inizio ai primi di maggio, in coincidenza con il germogliare degli alberi di gelso; dopodiché “su semene” viene tenuto per un intero anno in un ambiente fresco, per evitare che le uova si schiudano e finché le foglie di gelso non iniziano a germogliare. Secondo la tradizione la schiusa del seme avvenne per la prima volta il 25 di aprile, in concomitanza con la festa di San Marco; in tale occasione le donne del paese si sarebbero recate in processione dalla Chiesa di San Pietro fino alla chiesa campestre di San Marco, tenendo nel seno un involucro di cotone contenente il seme. Lallevamento del baco da seta ad Orgosolo presenta inoltre alcuni aspetti originali: innanzitutto la colorazione gialla del filo di seta che la differenzia dalle produzioni realizzate a livello industriale, nelle quali si è da sempre scelto, per motivi economici, di produrre seta bianca, a causa della sua maggiore facilità a colorarla. Il giallo di Orgosolo è legato al tipico colore intenso de “su lionzu”, tinteggiato con lo zafferano locale; un’altra particolarità è data invece dal fatto che il baco da seta allevato ad Orgosolo non ha subito in questi secoli incroci con altre razze, facendo sì che nel tempo si sia selezionata una vera e propria specie riconosciuta oggi come razza Orgosolo. Si può assistere al processo che porta alla creazione del prezioso copricapo nel centro di Orgosolo, nel laboratorio Tramas de Seda di Maria Corda, discendente di una famiglia che porta avanti la tradizione da più di 200 anni. Ainda é absurdo e dói de jeitos diferentes a cada dia, mas acontecem também um milhão de outros processos que não são dor, que são ressignificados reaprendizados reposicionamentos... Me conforta um pouquinho conseguir entender como a gente não é só vida, a gente é o que aprende e ensina, a gente é troca e conexão. E eu sou um pouco ele e ele um pouco eu. Ele é a minha forma de me comprometer, de cuidar das pessoas, ele é o meu magnetismo, e a minha falta de paciência. Ele é tão vivo em mim que a morte física vira quase um paradoxo. Confieso que olvido los aniversarios de las muertes. Y cuando olvido es sin excepción. Mi vieja me recordó que ayer hizo dos años del fallecimiento de mi abuela Marina. Septiembre se empeña, al parecer, en alegrarme y arderme el alma con igual intensidad. Ese fue un día de mierda. Sonaba insistentemente mi teléfono. Eran las 6:00 am. Cuando el mar, el huso horario y miles de kilómetros es una separación física con los afectos, una llamada antes que amanezca nunca es una buena noticia. Solo llevaba una hora de sueño. Entre dormido alcancé a ver que era de Cuba, donde es una hora menos. Me negué por unos segundos a despertar y atender. Hola..., contesto tímido. Del otro lado nítidamente como nunca la comunicación, escucho: Kalo, soy tía Vicky. Es Marina... Se me desplomó todo. Solo atiné a gritar ¡Ay, PINGA!, del dolor y la impotencia. Había fallecido mi abuela (mi gran primer amor) en Cuba un par de horas antes. Mi único temor desde que vivo fuera de Cuba son estas noticias. Por más naturales y esperadas que sean nunca estás preparado. Yo no extraño Cuba porque la llevo a todos lados. El cielo en Buenos Aires es tan azul como el de La Habana. No hay mar pero esas callecitas de Buenos Aires tienen ese no sé qué.... No siento la lejanía porque aunque hace 10años que vivo a 7 mil km de la Isla, nunca me fui. Pero tiemblo y padezco esa lejanía física cuando caen estas llamadas. La impotencia de no estar en Holguín, entre los míos en ese instante para el dolor compartir, es poderosa. Mi relación con la muerte es inversamente proporcional a la vida. Más que el tiempo como una categoría duración/vida he aprendido a quedarme con las intensidades/vida compartidas. Quizás por eso me olvido de las fechas de los fallecimientos. Con mi abuela Marina tuve una relación de muchas intensidades desde mi nacimiento cuando, sin ser mi abuela de sangre, eligió cuidarme, mimarme y educarme con la potencia amorosa transferida a un primer nieto. - @kalofotoian on Instagram

My sweet grandpa passed away on Friday night. He passed away peacefully with all 12 of his kids by his bedside, his wife and several grandkids. My Grandpa has always shown me love and how to be a better person. He wasn’t given an easy life, he suffered physically but I never heard him complain. He was the smartest person I knew. I really mean that. He went to medical school, law school, and loved learning about the gospel. He moved to Hawaii just because he loved it that much. I was lucky enough to spend time with my Grandpa in Hawaii a few years ago. I will cherish that time forever. He wrote me weekly on my mission, and I always loved his encouraging letters and words of advice. He genuinely cared about me and what was going on in my life. In this period of confinement that forces us to slow down on everything, we are enjoying our house, the wonderful Italian spring days, Minerva our youngest granddaughter, great books of epic stories, nature and Renata knows how to keep us happy as she cooks divinely well. Thoughtful Thursday. Thankful Thursday. Therapeutic Thursday. All of the above indeed. My maternal grandfather died on Monday at age 101 in Seoul, S Korea. These photos show the funeral process in S. Korea plus the #tbt photos of him (and my grandmother who died a few years ago) at my wedding in 1998. I’ve been processing all week what I’m feeling and able to share it now in words. It feels like the end of an era. He was the last of my grandparents to go, and lived a very long, fulfilling life! I am at peace not only about his death, but my upbringing. I am thankful to say, I am proud of my family, Korean heritage, and what my grandparents have done and signify in my life. Yes, I did struggle greatly with my identity and know that I was definitely not a favorite mainly because I was the third oldest grandchild, second girl and didn’t compare with the other two cousins! 😭 However, a poignant moment I will always recall was the time my grandfather told me in 2002, I was raising my kids very well. That. Was. A. Moment. The first, the last, the only positive affirmation I had ever received from my grandfather. We were in Seoul visiting over the holidays and my son at the time was only 8 months old and never cried. :). So, he called him an “angel” in Korean and acknowledged that it must be from my parenting. 😂. In all honesty, my son was just a really good baby. 🤣However, I graciously accepted the compliment and owned it because it was so IMPACTFUL. It was then that I realized I had finally come to a reconciliation in my self-identity crisis. Transformed from that day on, and so passionate about the work I do today in mental health. 🤗 Grandfather 왜 할아버지wrote a book last year and he chronicles his life and includes his grandchildren. Yes, me too! And, he makes me sound much more accomplished than I am. Η ζωή δεν έχει μόνο χαρές... Χθες έφυγε ξαφνικά ο πατήρ Βασίλειος Αποστολόπουλος... ένας σπάνιος άνθρωπος, πνευματοπαίδι του παππού μου, που ήταν επίσης ιερέας -ο πιο Φωτισμένος ιερέας του κόσμου. Πέρυσι, τέτοια εποχή, την ώρα που με πάντρευε, μου ψιθύρισε: «Αυτός είναι ο σταυρός του παππού σου. Είναι μαζί μας αυτή τη στιγμή» Τότε έπνιξα τα δάκρυά μου, σήμερα όμως είμαι απαρηγόρητη. Μόλις λίγους μήνες μετά τον παπά-Λουκά μας, που έφυγε εν μέσω lockdown και δεν μπορέσαμε να αποχαιρετήσουμε, χάνουμε αναπάντεχα και τον δεύτερο πνευματικό μας και φάρο πολλών οικογενειών... Γλυκέ μου παπά-Βασίλη, φυλάω στην ψυχή μου σαν θησαυρό τις τελευταίες ευχές που μου έδωσες πριν δύο εβδομάδες... Όταν ανταμώσεις τον παππού μου να του πεις ότι 15 χρόνια μετά, εξακολουθεί να μου λείπει αφάνταστα... Θα συνεχίσω να περπατώ απερίσπαστη στο Φωτεινό μονοπάτι που χαράξατε... What I’d like you to know about my grandmother is that her voice was a song. She carried each sentence like a tune, a bird chirping sweet positivity. Each syllable, a small laugh. Each breath, a tempo. And sure, there are other things, too. Like how she used to secretly bribe me when I was young to quit bad habits, but it rarely worked because she always gave me the reward first. Or how she insisted on making chocolate cake with chocolate frosting any time I was in town, even after my taste had advanced beyond my childhood cravings. Or how she had a talent for delicate crafts, like calligraphy, needlework and 3D paper art. But yes, what I mostly want you to know is that, while I never once heard my grandmother sing, I only ever heard her sing.
