Vorige zomer trok ik met fotograaf Brenda van Leeuwen langs de Zeeuwse kust. We hadden gehoord dat bij Bruinisse, in de haven aan het Zijpe een klein visrestaurant staat waar een woeste zeeman met baard Oosterscheldekreeft van de BBQ serveert. Zijn Zeeuwse oesters durft hij trouwens ook op die grill te leggen, wat de oester-puriteinen onder ons er ook van mogen vinden. Eigenaar Dirk-Pieter Arkenbout zijn motto is ‘eigen vis eerst’ en alles wat er hier op het bord komt, wordt voor de deur - of misschien iets verderop - gevangen. Op tafel stonden die dag gegrilde scheermessen en kokkels bereid met lekker veel knoflook. Er waren oesters van de BBQ met een dressing van sojasaus, nam pla, gembersiroop, citroengras, kokosbloesem, koriander, limoensap en een sjalotje. De middag eindigt in een slagveld: bergen lege schelpen en gekraakte kreeftenpoten. Four years ago today, a dog died and took a boy’s heart with him. Each year I meditate on that dog and that loss because I know Eko is not done teaching me. The wisdom of his memory waits ready for the man who was too young or in too much pain to understand the lessons those years ago But as today loomed, I resisted the quiet communion with my puppy. I feared Eko’s memory would no longer recognize me. The boy he left is gone, replaced by a man who finds it harder and harder to remember the boy Just a few short years later and I struggle to recall who I was before. Before Eko’s death broke me, before Penny demanded I get out of bed, before Zero helped me find my way, before becoming a father restored me, and becoming a father again remade me I avoided shining the light of Eko’s spirit on my faded memories of the boy he loved so dearly. I was too afraid it would reveal that by forgetting myself I was forgetting him. To lose Eko again would be too much to bear, so I decided to set aside reflection and focus on simple remembrance. To go back to the beginning - the photos, the blogs, the videos, and remind myself of our time together I found the story no less thrilling for knowing the end. I discovered the memory of Eko’s smile remains as vivid as ever. I closed my eyes and knew with certainty my hands recalled the exact shape of his head held between them. And in remembering Eko, I remembered myself. My hopes, my dreams, my love and the dog who forged them together In a moment of revelation I understood the memory of the boy is not truly fading. He now lives in the memory of the dog I have profound gratitude for this difficult truth. It means the boy and the dog are bound as one, forever. As it should be. And though they are both gone, they have left me a truly priceless inheritance - a life and a family that would have been impossible without either of them There’s so much to mourn, both in the past and present. Our lives and our world are teetering precariously. But this day I devote to gratitude for a boy and his dog. And all of you who joined us along the way. Albie Barden and his partner Michele now live on a sliver of that old flint corn ground in Norridgewock, and are acutely aware of the history there. They grow and save locally-adapted flint corn varieties to share and preserve through the present and into the future. Writer Katy Kelleher interviewed Albie for our story in the Maine Farms Journal: “Corn started in Mexico. It took about a thousand years for it to cross the country, hand to hand, farmer to farmer, mouth to mouth. “(...)every time it moved from one community to another, it was adapted by the indigenous farmer to meet the needs of the climate. It was being selected by the farmers. And guess who they were? They were women. Women were the biologists, the scientists, the farmers who were watching every stalk of corn. “(...)The only grain that is truly North American is corn. The corn belonged to the Native people; as their cultures were broken and stolen, as their territory was taken, their tradition of growing corn was taken. “Pockets of corn survived. Those ancient varieties of flint corn, some of it has survived in vaults (...) some in a shoebox with two or three ears of corn in an attic. “We can grow that corn again. We are growing it now. If you have a five-gallon bucket and a backyard, I can give you five seeds of flint corn. And you can begin to redevelop the sacred relationship to the corn and the earth.” . I’ve been out filming the last 10 days on the island of Bornholm and touched it in depth through the scope. • At the same time I’ve been listening extensively to John Coltrane who touches my soul with good vibes. One of his insightful quotes gives an insight into the man whose mind was as fascinating as his playing: “I never even thought about whether or not they understand what I’m doing … the emotional reaction is all that matters. Here I am in signing action at the wonderful @halfwayupthestairsbookshop yesterday. Taken this time last year when the world was a very different place, this photo signifies for me what a proper community grocery store is all about. Dedicated, hard-working, knowledgeable staff who are more like family than employees; a hand-picked array of British produce celebrating artisan producers from all corners of our country; and all in place to serve the wonderful people of Bermondsey and beyond. The three of us here have been working flat out since lockdown and been happy to keep our customers fed and watered. But we are now ready for a break and have decided to close the shop for a week and a bit to give us all a good rest, ready to celebrate our 3rd anniversary at the beginning of September. We will shut up shop at 6pm on Saturday 22nd August and reopen on Wednesday 2nd September. There is still time to stock up on your favourite goodies and for the next 9 days we are offering a 10% discount if you spend over £60 in store.
