I know we are in the midst of strange and frightening times, but I’d like to indulge myself for a moment to celebrate a pretty major personal milestone. 🚨Warning: Long post ahead🚨 For those of you who don’t know, I’ve struggled with painful cystic acne for the majority of my life - pretty much since I was 12 years old. I tried every prescription topical and pill known to man, and nothing helped. I had girls at school ask me if I had the chicken pox. I’ve waited weeks for a cyst that changed the whole shape of my nose to go down. In the last 17 years, I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve left my home without makeup on, even for something simple like going to the laundromat. It has affected nearly every major aspect of my life for as long as I can remember - my self esteem, my social skills, my relationships, you name it. There were times I wore concealer to bed because I was too self conscious for a partner to see me bare faced, which would only cause angrier breakouts, lower my confidence, and the cycle would continue on. It was actually very difficult to find “before” pictures to post here, because I so rarely would take a picture if I wasn’t covered up. And I’m honestly still terrified to share them at all! Last August, I bit the bullet and started Accutane. It’s a very harsh drug, and I won’t lie and say it’s been an easy journey - the side effects are pretty harrowing, and I’ve struggled through many of them. But as of today, I am officially done with my course, and after many long years, my skin is CLEAR!! YOU GUYS. I haven’t had a breakout in TWO MONTHS. I haven’t worn foundation in WEEKS. I know these seem like small victories, but to me, it’s monumental. I am just so excited to live a life where I can literally feel comfortable in my own skin.
