I was sitting in a crowded cafe, waiting for my hot coffee to get cold. Loud music played, people chatted away, and the pings of story updates didnt leave thoughts any space. I put my sound cancellation headphones on, and revelled in the white noise while swaying to the tunes of my thoughts. My back away from the crowd, eyes set on the hills of McLeod Ganj through the pretty window frame. I felt a tap on my shoulder; just an old acquaintance asking how much has changed, and walking away after a few pleasantries had been exchanged. But it wasnt a random exchange, or random acquaintance. My mind whirled over how I wasnt startled at the sudden touch; and if there was any anxiety, it hadnt shown much. I smiled wide at their back, saw them kiss a freshly gotten in significant other, through the pretty door of the cafe. Turning away from the crowd again, I sat on the chair, put my headphones, they were blasting Tonight Im Getting Over You loud in my ears. Who gets me? 🙋♀️ I work with many clients who when first coming to see me are weighing themselves multiple times a day and feeling like failures because they cant understand why the number goes up. Their self worth and how they go about the day is determined by what that number does. So why DOES weight change over the course of a day or a week? Well, we arent machines and our bodies are forever changing. Heres what the change might reflect 👇 ▪ hydration status ▪ how much 💩 is in your gut ▪ glycogen levels (stored carbohydrates attract 3-4 molecules of water when stored in muscles and the liver so are heavy) ▪hormone levels ▪how much we have eaten or drunk ▪muscle or fat gain Dont let the scale fool you into thinking you are not worthy or not working hard enough. I’ve been talking more about inner child work lately. . We all carry a little version of ourselves around with us. Sometimes this little person is quiet and unnoticeable. . Other times, she can get loud and let you know something from the present day has opened up wounds from the past. . For people who had less than ideal upbringings...this younger person can come online more frequently and intensely, piping up with sometimes decades old painful beliefs from wounds that haven’t been healed. . These old wounds are often not obvious to other people-even those closest to you. Something seemingly innocuous might unleash a big response in you, and this may really surprise your partner. They had no idea what happened hit a very old nerve. Sometimes the fact that these wounds are invisible to others can be another source of the pain. . For people who carry with them a painful story from when they are young, practicing kindness towards themselves today- as well as to their younger self is so important. . Kindness comes in all forms: going to therapy to begin (or continue) along the healing journey is a profound act of kindness. Letting go of self judgement is another one. Paying attention to old pain in a loving way is another supreme act of kindness. . A big piece of this work is knowing that you’re okay, and it’s okay to have these old wounds and scars. They’ve never affected you at your core, who you are is complete and intact. You’re not broken- you never were. Self compassion can go a long way here. . I can’t talk about how I feel because… . “People will think I’m weak.” “Where I’m from I have to be strong.” “People will take advantage of me.” “This is how I protect myself from others.” “Women don’t like men with feelings.” . I understand that culturally, regionally and societally men are taught to “save face,” “be strong” and not be caught “slipping.” This inability to be expressive is beyond interpersonal dilemmas and conflicts. This is a collective issue. One that must be addressed and normalized. I also come from a culture that looks down on emotional expression, especially when it comes from men. It simply isn’t taught or valued. I have seen the effect it has on the men that I work with, the men that I personally know and the men I have witnessed growing up. Perhaps, we can start with a small step of self-expression in the home, where it feels safe. Co-existing With Other Sexual Orientations I was around 22 years of my age when I found that I don’t feel how other girls in my college feel about women. I, initially resisted and ignored it, and told myself that it could just be the devil in my mind or my proactive self or perhaps a curiosity to explore the same gender but gradually the attraction towards the same gender multiplied ten folds. Even then, I was still attracted to men. I also started to read about gender, gender fluidity, homosexuality and what is it to be bisexual. I couldn’t talk much about the feeling I persisted in myself because of the fear of how it would make people treat me. My journey as a bisexual person was becoming tougher- I needed someone to tell me it was alright to feel that way. It was when, I, found out that sexual fluidity and identity has always been a challenge in cis domineering society. The colonisation of binary/straight/cis gender men and women is in the making. The problem lies not with their sexual identifications but with their thought process; with homophobia and a meek belief that homosexuality is unnatural. I was disheartened to not be able to do anything about my urges, feelings and thought process. I was experiencing a major sexual shift between a man and a woman at the same time. I read more. I realised, that amidst a huge spectrum of sexual identities, both men and women get lost and end up in an identity crisis. I was under one. Despite, I knew I liked people regardless of their gender, but was sceptical on how to identify myself.
