One day I went to invite Rabindranath Tagore for the annual Hindi SammeIan, when he started a discussion with me During the course of our conversation he asked, “Besides teaching what else are you doing over here?” “I write stories in Hindi which are published in the leading Hindi magazines. During my stay here, I have written a lot and also earned a good name for myself.” ‘But your mother tongue is not Hindi. You are a Punjabi. Why don’t you write in the Punjabi language?” I felt that Tagore was a narrow-minded, provincial man; at that time I did not realize that an artist must first be nationally known in the true sense of the word, before he is internationally acclaimed. “But Hindi is the national language. It is the language of the entire nation. Why should I write in any provincial language, when I can write for the entire country?” I said. “I write in Bengali, which is a provincial language; yet, not only the people of Hindustan but people all over the world read what I write.” “I am not a great writer like you, I am just an insignificant writer.” “It is not the question of greatness or smallness; a writer has a relationship with his own birthplace, his people and his language. It is only from them that he can receive the warmth and feeling of being one of them.” “Probably you do not have much knowledge about the conditions prevailing in my State. In Punjab, we either write in Hindi or in Urdu. No one writes in Punjabi. Punjabi is a very backward language. If you want an honest opinion, it cannot be called a language. It is a sub-language, a dialect of the Hindi language.” “I do not agree with you. The Punjabi literature or the Bengali literature is very old. « De nos minutes photographiques avec @nikosaliagas » - ACT II/Flashback 17h33, je viens d’appuyer sur le bouton stop de mon enregistreur. Nous avons fait l’interview en une prise une seule, dingue. La pièce où nous sommes est comme peinte de reflets de lumière du soleil qui entre à grandes salves qui claquent sur le sol les murs les portes. Me revient en flashback ce lundi matin de février 2016 où une amie d’une radio m’adresse un sms « Nikos Aliagas veut ton numéro pour te parler personnellement d’un truc, j’peux lui donner? » / je réponds illico « Well, c’est quoi ton délire c’est une blague ? » / « non non d’ailleurs j’ai pas attendu ton accord, j’lui ai donné ton numéro 😬 ». J’vais me chercher un café, 3 minutes chrono, je reviens, 1 appel en absence, pas de message, je rappelle et la voix à l’autre bout du fil me lance « Ah Romain salut c’est Nikos Aliagas, ça va tu vas bien t’es en forme, dis moi, une amie à moi @daphnez va monter une expo en hommage aux victimes des attentats de l’an dernier, sur le thème de la liberté, des terrasses, on voudrait que tu fasses partie de l’expo, t’es ok ? »... «Euh ouais...bien sûr...euh... », j’ai l’air con, je le sais, je remercie, on discute un peu, « bon bah rendez à l’expo dans 1 mois ». Le week-end qui suit je shoote la photo pour l’expo, 3 semaines plus tard nous nous voyons dans cette galerie où ma photo en grand format est exposée juste à côté de la sienne, nous échangeons longuement, le courant passe, sa bienveillance est rare et fraternelle, je suis comme un gamin, un lien se tisse, solide, vrai, il ne se coupera jamais. 4 ans 1/2 plus tard, mon boîtier à la main je cadre très serré, le regard est déterminé, les mains s’élancent, il est 17h34, je shoote capte et clique...l’histoire d’une minute...photographique. _____________________________________ _____________________________________ Model : @nikosaliagas Lieu : Paris @laseinemusicale / sept. 2020 Photo/texte : Romestebanr Shooté with @canonfrance EOSR - @romestebanr on Instagram
