Looking at this picture of my mom (Emily’s grandmother) from the late ‘40s after WWII has really encouraged me the past few weeks. Seeing the strength in her eyes after surviving the war by hiding in the jungles of the Philippines for two years during the Japanese military occupation just makes me realize that “this too shall pass” and that what I am going through because of COVID-19 is nothing new. In fact, I think being quarantined in my nice suburban neighborhood, in my nice home, being able to swim in my nice pool, is not suffering at all compared to what my mom went through. She endured great suffering and saw many horrible things, but she along with her little brother, her dad, and his Filipino family, were able to persevere. She told me that her older male cousins would hide her and the other teenage girls whenever the guerrilla fighters (local Filipino militia) would come into their jungle camps because they would often times rape the teenage girls. Thankfully they were all finally rescued by the U.S Military and she sailed back to America aboard a navy troop ship where she celebrated her 16th birthday. She said her dad had to constantly keep the young sailors away from her as you can see that she was quite a beauty! THE WORLD TO COME is premiering this week at the Venice Film Festival. The film is based on a short story by Jim Shephard. Jims short stories, novels, and non-fiction are all EXCELLENT. Dont take my word for it. If you like movies, start with his essays, THE TUNNEL AT THE END OF THE LIGHT. The script was written by Jim and Ron Hansen (ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES). Ron is also a brilliant novelist and one of my most favorite historical fiction writers. HITLERS NIECE, JESSE JAMES and DESPERADOES are all perfect. The movie is directed by Mona Fastvold, a Norwegian filmmaker who made SLEEPWALKER. She did a GREAT job,and put her own totally unique stamp on this movie. Thank you, Mona! The film belongs to @katherinewaterston and @vanessa__kirby. These are two of the best actresses I have ever worked with. Their characters meet, fall in love, recite poetry, tolerate husbands, endure a million hardships, sit by the fire, and have a first kiss that is incredibly sweet. My character spends most of his time outside with his horse (we kissed a little bit too- its fine). Chris Abbot rounds out our cast of 4. He is fascinating as always. We dont get enough of him in this movie, but you can go back and rewatch CATCH-22 or JAMES WHITE. The man can hold a screen! I acted in and produced the movie, and I am honored to have worked with all of the people involved, including @killer.films and the hard working Romanian crew. The film would have collapsed without @Patriciapoienaru and @whitlader who produced and also doctored stray dogs. Whit, you were heroic. I dont know where films like this end up these days, but the Venice Film Festival is one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world, and definitely a personal favorite, so it’s an exciting start. We are all grateful to the festival for having us. Everyone says “the show must go on” but only a few make it happen.
