Gabriel Martinez’s hand-stitched paintings are created from fragments of fabric found on the streets of Houston, Texas. The paintings preserve traces of global capital, evoking the persons who dyed and printed the fabric, those who assembled the garments, those who wore them, and ultimately those who lost them. Martinez recovers these remnants and circulates them back into the market through this series of works. “Make America What America Must Become,” An Exhibition of Gulf South Artists is on view at the CAC until January 24, 2021. Today, Kunsthalle Lingen is opening the exhibition “Grundrisse” with our artist Susa Templin. The complex work “Liquid Crystal Labyrinth” is a photo installation, whose transparent image carriers hang from the ceiling, creating a luminous atmosphere of light and colour. The artist, working with analogue photography, seemingly deconstructs and distorts photographed space with a multiple exposure technique and thereby creates new abstract spaces, reminiscent of memories.
