A magnificent kākāpō photographed by @tal_ttocs 🐦 #birdsofaotearoa #nzbirds Mod: @hollyneill Māori name: Kākāpō English name: Night parrot Scientific name: Strigops habroptilus NZ status: Endemic Conservation status: Nationally Critical Overview: The kakapo is a large, nocturnal, flightless, lek-breeding parrot – a real oddity. It is also critically endangered, and the focus of considerable conservation attention. Before humans arrived it was common throughout New Zealand’s forests, but predation by introduced mammals brought it to the brink of extinction - a low point of about 50 birds only in the mid 1990s. The transfer of the whole population to predator-free islands and intensive intervention in every stage of its life has led to a steady increase in numbers. Population: A total of 210 birds was known in June 2020. All carry radio transmitters and are intensively monitored and managed. Distribution: They disappeared from the North Island by about 1930, but persisted longer in the wetter parts of the South Island. The last birds died out in Fiordland in the late 1980s. A population of less than two hundred birds was discovered on Stewart Island in 1977, but this population was also declining due to cat predation. During the 1980s and 1990s the entire known population was transferred to Whenua Hou/Codfish Island off the coast of Stewart Island, Maud Island in the Marlborough Sounds and Hauturu/Little Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf. Since then birds have been moved between Whenua Hou, Maud Island and Hauturu, as well as to and from newly predator-free Chalky and Anchor Islands in Fiordland. Kakapo now occur only on forested islands, though they previously appeared to have inhabited a wide range of vegetation types. Threats: Adult kakapo are vulnerable to predation by cats and stoats, and their eggs and chicks can be killed by rats. Females alone incubate eggs and raise chicks. As they must spend long periods away from the nest feeding, eggs and chicks are particularly vulnerable to predation when the nest is unattended. Birds are very susceptible to hitting windows, particularly during migration, when they are on the move. They often cannot perceive the solid surface until it is too late due to reflections and/or perceived “fly through tunnels” when 2 windows are back to back or on a corner. The birds that are admitted to our hospital are lucky, but sadly many, many other birds are not. Please take action steps to make your windows bird safe! இன்றைய பார்வையில் நாம் காண்பது ஹிமாலயன் மோனல் ( Himalayan monal or Impeyan pheasant ). இனி இந்த மயில் போன்ற பட்சி பற்றிய சில தகவல்களை இனி காண்போம். இமயமலையில் , கடல் மட்டத்திலிருந்து சுமார் 2100-4500 மீட்டர் உயரத்தில் உள்ள காடுகளில் வாழ்கின்ற , Phasianidae குடும்பத்தை சார்ந்த , பெரிய அளவிலான ஃபெசண்ட் ஆகும். இந்த பறவையானது சுமார் 70 செண்டி மீட்டர் நீளம் கொண்டது. வயது வந்த ஆண் பறவைகள் பல வண்ண தோகைகளை உடல் முழுவதும் கொண்டிருக்கும். பெண் பறவைகள் மற்ற ஃபெசண்டுகளைப் போலவே , நிறத்திலும் குணத்திலும் மிகவும் அடக்கமாக இருக்கும். ஆணின் குறிப்பிடத்தக்க அம்சமாக ஒரு நீண்ட , உலோகப் பச்சை முகடு , பின்புறம் மற்றும் கழுத்தில் brassy feathers (செப்பு இறகுகள் ) , மற்றும் பறவை பறக்கும் போது மிகவும புலப்படும் ஒரு வெள்ளை ரம்ப் ஆகியவை அடங்கும் . ஆண் பறவைகளின் வால் சிறகுகள் ஒரே மாதிரியாக அடர்த்தியாக இருக்கின்றன, அதே சமயம் பெண்ணின் கீழ் வால் மறைப்புகள் வெள்ளை நிறமாகவும் , கருப்பு மற்றும் சிவப்பு நிறமாகவும் இருக்கின்றன. பெண் பறவையின் தொண்டையில் ஒரு முக்கிய வெள்ளை இணைப்பு மற்றும் வாலில் ஒரு வெள்ளை துண்டு உள்ளது. இந்தப் பறவையின் முதலாவது வயதில் ஆணும் இளம் பெண்ணும் பெண் பறவையை போன்றிருக்கும. ஆணின் எடை 2380 கிராம் மற்றும் பெண் பறவை 2150 கிராம் வரை இருக்கும் . இந்த பறவையானது திறந்த புல்வெளி சரிவுகள் , பாறைகள் மற்றும் ஆல்பைன் புல்வெளிகளுடன் உள்ள காடுகளில் வசிக்கின்றன. இது தன் இரையாக பனிக்காலத்தில் தாவர வேர்கள் மற்றும் பூச்சிகளை உட்கொள்ள தோண்டியெடுத்து உண்ணுகின்றன. இந்தப் பறவைகளின் இனப்பெருக்க காலம் ஏப்ரல் முதல் ஆகஸ்ட் வரை என அறியப்பட்டுள்ளது. I decided to go through photos from my last trip to #CostaRica; I haven’t edited them all out yet, so expect a few days of tropical species before it turns to fall owl research. The Green Honeycreeper is one of the most stunning species of tanager that calls Costa Rica home. While they don’t look like your typical tanager, they sure do act like it, often being found in mixed-species flocks racing through the rainforest in search of the next meal. There’s something magical to mixed-species flocks. As they approach, you hear the growing symphony of sounds moving towards you, the trees illuminate with movement, dashing colors flickering above you, and as soon as they’ve arrived there gone onto the next buffet. - @gourmetbiologist on Instagram

Locked on target! . Way back in 2017 I got this shot of a Swallow heading straight towards me. I was pleased to get the shot but unfortunately the background was just grey sky. So just for a bit of fun I decided at that time to add a different background (which is of the garden I was in when I took the shot) and added some radial zoom blur. This particular version is one Ive reprocessed this afternoon and to my mind, it improves on the one I uploaded 3 years ago. . En este caso de chorlo chileno (Charadrius modestus) especie migratoria visitante de invierno en Chiloé. El chorlo chileno es una especie poco estudiada y con este marcaje buscamos aprender más de ellos, de sus desplazamientos, la fidelidad a los sitios, entre otras preguntas que podremos ir respondiendo con los años de este trabajo. Glue traps are one of the cruelest methods of rodent control. These traps cause prolonged suffering as frantic animals attempt to escape. Death can take days! The sad truth....Without exception, every person who has rushed to our clinic with an animal stuck in a glue trap has expressed deep regret. Each person says that, had they known how intensely the trapped animal would suffer, no matter how despised that animal may be, they never would have used the product. SECRETARY BIRD The secretarybird or secretary bird (Sagittarius serpentarius) is a large, mostly terrestrial bird of prey. Endemic to Africa, it is usually found in the open grasslands and savannah of the sub-Saharan region. John Frederick Miller described the species in 1779. Although a member of the order Accipitriformes, which also includes many other diurnal raptors such as kites, hawks, vultures, and harriers, it is placed in its own family, Sagittariidae. The secretarybird is instantly recognizable as a very large bird with an eagle-like body on crane-like legs which increases the birds height to as much as 1.3 m (4.3 ft) tall. The sexes are similar in appearance. Según la lista roja de la IUCN (International Union of Conservation of Nature), el estado de conservación del jote de cabeza colorada se encuentra clasificado como una especie de menor riesgo, lo que quiere decir que su población se ha mantenido estable a través del tiempo. A pesar de esto, esta rapaz es considerada una amenaza para algunas personas que viven de la ganadería, ya que se dice que se alimenta de animales recién nacidos y que difunden enfermedades como la peste porcina o el carbuncos. Sin embargo, es todo lo contrario, pues su tracto digestivo tiene ácidos que destruyen estos virus. Lo cierto es que el rol ecológico que esta rapaz cumple dentro de la cadena es tan importante como el resto de las rapaces, ya que es considerado un purificador, esto es debido a su conducta alimenticia basada en consumir animales en descomposición. El jote de cabeza colorada está protegido por diferentes leyes y tratados internacionales alrededor de América, tales como el Tratado de Aves Migratorias de Estados Unidos, país en el cual se puede cobrar una multa de hasta 15.000 USD y cumplir sentencia en prisión de hasta seis meses; la Convención para la protección de Aves Migratorias en Canadá y México, la Convención de Especies Migratorias de Animales Silvestres que ha sido ratificada en 115 países, entre los cuales se incluye Chile.
