Today is World Cassowary Day! Here are 6 facts about this amazing bird Cassowaries are the worlds most dangerous bird. They have a large claw on the inter toe of each foot. When threatened, Cassowaries can jump & strike using this claw which can potentially result in fatal wounds. The male cassowary looks after the chicks. Once the female has laid her eggs, the male incubates them for around 50 days and once hatched the males raise them for around 9 months, teaching them to forage for food until they can fend for themselves. A Cassowaries most distinctive feature is their casque, the helmet like crest on their head. It begins to develop when the bird is around 2 years of age. Scientists still have not yet discovered the true reason for the casque. Cassowaries are a part of the ratite family meaning large flightless birds, other members of this family include Emus, Ostriches, Rhea & Kiwis. All of these birds have a flat breastbone that is unable to support the muscles required for flight. Although these birds cannot fly they can run extremely fast, the cassowary can run up to 50km per hour & the fastest being the ostrich at 70km per hour. Cassowaries are generally solitary animals meaning they do not live in pairs or groups. During breeding season they communicate by very deep bellows, one of the lowest sounding bird calls known to humans. The sound waves actually cannot be picked up by any video or recording device. Cassowaries main food source consists of fruit, they eat the fruit whole and can actually swallow fruit up to the size of a mango whole! இன்றைய பார்வையில் நாம் காண்பது ஹிமாலயன் மோனல் ( Himalayan monal or Impeyan pheasant ). இனி இந்த மயில் போன்ற பட்சி பற்றிய சில தகவல்களை இனி காண்போம். இமயமலையில் , கடல் மட்டத்திலிருந்து சுமார் 2100-4500 மீட்டர் உயரத்தில் உள்ள காடுகளில் வாழ்கின்ற , Phasianidae குடும்பத்தை சார்ந்த , பெரிய அளவிலான ஃபெசண்ட் ஆகும். இந்த பறவையானது சுமார் 70 செண்டி மீட்டர் நீளம் கொண்டது. வயது வந்த ஆண் பறவைகள் பல வண்ண தோகைகளை உடல் முழுவதும் கொண்டிருக்கும். பெண் பறவைகள் மற்ற ஃபெசண்டுகளைப் போலவே , நிறத்திலும் குணத்திலும் மிகவும் அடக்கமாக இருக்கும். ஆணின் குறிப்பிடத்தக்க அம்சமாக ஒரு நீண்ட , உலோகப் பச்சை முகடு , பின்புறம் மற்றும் கழுத்தில் brassy feathers (செப்பு இறகுகள் ) , மற்றும் பறவை பறக்கும் போது மிகவும புலப்படும் ஒரு வெள்ளை ரம்ப் ஆகியவை அடங்கும் . ஆண் பறவைகளின் வால் சிறகுகள் ஒரே மாதிரியாக அடர்த்தியாக இருக்கின்றன, அதே சமயம் பெண்ணின் கீழ் வால் மறைப்புகள் வெள்ளை நிறமாகவும் , கருப்பு மற்றும் சிவப்பு நிறமாகவும் இருக்கின்றன. பெண் பறவையின் தொண்டையில் ஒரு முக்கிய வெள்ளை இணைப்பு மற்றும் வாலில் ஒரு வெள்ளை துண்டு உள்ளது. இந்தப் பறவையின் முதலாவது வயதில் ஆணும் இளம் பெண்ணும் பெண் பறவையை போன்றிருக்கும. ஆணின் எடை 2380 கிராம் மற்றும் பெண் பறவை 2150 கிராம் வரை இருக்கும் . இந்த பறவையானது திறந்த புல்வெளி சரிவுகள் , பாறைகள் மற்றும் ஆல்பைன் புல்வெளிகளுடன் உள்ள காடுகளில் வசிக்கின்றன. இது தன் இரையாக பனிக்காலத்தில் தாவர வேர்கள் மற்றும் பூச்சிகளை உட்கொள்ள தோண்டியெடுத்து உண்ணுகின்றன. இந்தப் பறவைகளின் இனப்பெருக்க காலம் ஏப்ரல் முதல் ஆகஸ்ட் வரை என அறியப்பட்டுள்ளது. Cassowarys most distinctive feature is the casque, also known as the helmet that develops on top of their head at around 1-2 years of age. Scientists have long speculated about its purpose. One theory is that the casque helps the animal push aside forest underbrush. The casque might also be used to attract the opposite sex. A more interesting hypothesis involves how these birds communicate ; they emit very deep bellows - the lowest bird calls known to man. Perhaps their casques amplify these sounds by acting as a resonation chamber. Glue traps are one of the cruelest methods of rodent control. These traps cause prolonged suffering as frantic animals attempt to escape. Death can take days! The sad truth....Without exception, every person who has rushed to our clinic with an animal stuck in a glue trap has expressed deep regret. Each person says that, had they known how intensely the trapped animal would suffer, no matter how despised that animal may be, they never would have used the product. The African Harrier-Hawk is a distinctive looking raptor, best known for its remarkable double joints. It inserts it long legs into crevices and holes in tree trunks to extract nestlings and lizards, while it systematically works its way through a tree from bottom to top. I photographed this subadult during a particularly wet summer in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. I decided to go through photos from my last trip to #CostaRica; I haven’t edited them all out yet, so expect a few days of tropical species before it turns to fall owl research. The Green Honeycreeper is one of the most stunning species of tanager that calls Costa Rica home. While they don’t look like your typical tanager, they sure do act like it, often being found in mixed-species flocks racing through the rainforest in search of the next meal. There’s something magical to mixed-species flocks. As they approach, you hear the growing symphony of sounds moving towards you, the trees illuminate with movement, dashing colors flickering above you, and as soon as they’ve arrived there gone onto the next buffet. - @gourmetbiologist on Instagram

We’d like to introduce you to our newest addition, meet Bentayga aka “Little Benny”. He is a Aplomado Falcon and native to South America. He is currently 10 weeks old and will be taking part in our displays in a few months time. These pictures are of him being “manned” this is the process of sitting with the bird for hours, therefore building a bond with them. The secretarybird is instantly recognizable as a very large bird with an eagle-like body on crane-like legs which increases the birds height to as much as 1.3 m (4.3 ft) tall. The sexes are similar in appearance. We rescued a juvenile House Martin that had fledged the nest on a baking hot day last weekend. S/he couldnt fly so we fed hundreds of flies, mealworm tails (not the heads, they cant digest those!) and successfully released this week. Hirundines (swallows and martins) and swifts are the exception to the rule about leaving fledgling birds on the ground. Posee un vuelo característico, en el que intercala planeos con las alas horizontales y seis o siete aleteos fuertes. El jote de cabeza negra se distribuye desde el extremo norte del país hasta Aysén. Generalmente se le ve volando en pareja o en grupos dispersos, y es común que se encuentren acompañados de tiuques y caranchos a la hora de alimentarse, quienes aprovechan la comida y la protección de las bandadas de jotes. Debemos proteger a esta grandiosa ave rapaz, que limpia nuestro planeta de cuerpos de animales en descomposición, pues sin ella podrían acumularse y propagar enfermedades, lo que habla de la importancia de su rol ecológico. Locked on target! . Way back in 2017 I got this shot of a Swallow heading straight towards me. I was pleased to get the shot but unfortunately the background was just grey sky. So just for a bit of fun I decided at that time to add a different background (which is of the garden I was in when I took the shot) and added some radial zoom blur. This particular version is one Ive reprocessed this afternoon and to my mind, it improves on the one I uploaded 3 years ago. . Según la lista roja de la IUCN (International Union of Conservation of Nature), el estado de conservación del jote de cabeza colorada se encuentra clasificado como una especie de menor riesgo, lo que quiere decir que su población se ha mantenido estable a través del tiempo. A pesar de esto, esta rapaz es considerada una amenaza para algunas personas que viven de la ganadería, ya que se dice que se alimenta de animales recién nacidos y que difunden enfermedades como la peste porcina o el carbuncos. Sin embargo, es todo lo contrario, pues su tracto digestivo tiene ácidos que destruyen estos virus. Lo cierto es que el rol ecológico que esta rapaz cumple dentro de la cadena es tan importante como el resto de las rapaces, ya que es considerado un purificador, esto es debido a su conducta alimenticia basada en consumir animales en descomposición. El jote de cabeza colorada está protegido por diferentes leyes y tratados internacionales alrededor de América, tales como el Tratado de Aves Migratorias de Estados Unidos, país en el cual se puede cobrar una multa de hasta 15.000 USD y cumplir sentencia en prisión de hasta seis meses; la Convención para la protección de Aves Migratorias en Canadá y México, la Convención de Especies Migratorias de Animales Silvestres que ha sido ratificada en 115 países, entre los cuales se incluye Chile.
