Converse Brand Book I designed which included photos from their image vault. Really incredible to use these photos of the Harlem Rens (Renaissance) who invented, mind you, the fast break...and Chuck Taylor himself back when he still wore leather shoes. CT first devised rubber soles on basketball shoes. The third installment in our #blackcreators series comes from Talysha Bujold-Abu. February 2017: Position As Desired: Exploring African Canadian Identity Photographs from the Wedge Collection opened at the Art Gallery of Windsor (AGW), an exhibition marked by a curatorial examination of Black Canadian identity – a largely underrepresented history. Curator Kenneth Montague, born in Windsor, ON and now based in Toronto, ON is the Director of Wedge Curatorial Projects; a non-profit organization that collects, exhibits and lectures both locally and internationally on Black identity. During the curatorial walk-through of Position as Desired, Montague discussed the conceptual frameworks and anecdotal testimony present in the work, contextualizing the Black identities that create within the African diaspora, and the contemporary matters of radicalized difference. November 2019: States of Flux: Black Art as Cultural Archive a panel discussion at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD), was a thoughtful examination of archive, in how sameness and difference break from the western canon. As a collector and curator, Montague re-imagines more than the ‘single story read’; Black archive transforms into intimacy and leisure, validating Black creatives as they explore memory and oral tradition. Kenneth Montague is a cross-border curatorial agent between Windsor-Essex and Detroit, these exhibitions simultaneously address our Black communities – cultivating hybrid spaces for critical dialogue and storytelling. THE GIN VENUE Ive been quiet about this for ages. The reason being was I was waiting for planning permission to come through. Its taken 6 months, but its finally here🎉 In the end I chose not to write about it as everything seemed so uncertain. The whole world was so strange, and my little world was so uncertain!! I applied for Change of Use, but needed to supply flood risk documentation to the Environment Agency that was far beyond anything I ever imagined, due to me changing the premises to a Drinking Establishment thats near a river in Chelmsford. The answer to everything is ££££. I just couldnt spend £3.5k on a flood risk specialist out of my contingency budget. Trust me, I explored every avenue....I wont list them because when I go for it, I go for it... Everyone was supportive, but no one could actually help. So, I upskilled myself, and after one failed attempt, many days of studying and writing reports, my last risk assessment passed!! It is great news, but I am left wondering if this country actually wants small businesses to get off the ground at the moment. - Extremely sad. This Swedish girl was severely brain damaged ten years ago during a cheap breast enhancement surgery in Poland. Shes now 41 years old, living with her 67 year old mother as her full time carer. The anesthesiologist and two of the nurses were sentenced to jail.
It’s the end of September which for me means it’s been 1 year since I told my abuser to get lost and to never speak to me again. I drew this in my private journal during the height of his abuse. It was not meant to be shared but with September also being about suicide prevention I hope that my honesty in this illustration can help others feel less alone. For a while there I didn’t think I’d make it to a year. I thought terminating our relationship would instantly make me happy but instead it only revealed how many toxic relationships I have endured through so much of my life that I always thought was “normal” For an entire year I’ve been unlearning unhealthy patterns and building myself up. It’s been a lonely road—I’ll be honest. I expected more support in this journey but the road to healing only has a seat for one. So this is me patting myself on the back. Earlier this month I had in opportunity to reopen this Pandora’s box and I choose not to which was a huge win for me. I don’t need closure from him or need to know what he’s up to or who he’s manipulating now. I don’t need anything from him because instead of pain when I think of him now I feel...nothing. And that’s the greatest feeling of all. I wish I could go back in time to those weeks—months I could barely get out of bed and tell her she’s gonna make it. So instead if you are reading this now in the depths of your depression for thinking you’re not going to make it...you will. Le papa de Catherine a ce truc flou quont, en fait, souvent les parents quand on est petit et quon ne comprend pas exactement le métier quils font et que de toutes façons, nos parents, cest des pas comme nous. This beautiful, remarkable magazine is now on newsstands. Many of you started following me because of the 2018 Outside Magazine piece that I wrote called Were Here. You Just Dont See Us. This piece, Out There Nobody Can Hear You Scream, is the story of what came after. It contains the rawest, realest piece of writing Ive ever published about the outdoors. There is a piece of my soul in those pages, and I will never get it back. If youre able to make it out to a newsstand, I hope that youll pick up a copy. I am still in recovery mode from writing this, and not on social media as much. I want to let you know that I see all your messages, even though I might not be quick to respond. These deep dives--into Americas truth, into Americas history are incredibly heavy, and the state of our nation demands that I keep doing them. But they come at a cost. Please, charge it to my energy levels, and not to my heart. I know many of you enjoyed the Black Excellence issue of Outdoor Retailer that I helmed back in July. I think the current issue of Outside is what change looks like for a consumer facing magazine. Ive been captivated by @urbanclimbr L. Renee Blounts smile since I first saw it about a year ago, and Im elated shes on the cover, and that @ayanaeliza Ayana Elizabeth Johnsons voice is in these pages. It is a joy to see @badgal_brooky Brooklyn Bells face in an ad for GoRVing, and @zionwilliamson Zion Williamsons face (hes from Spartanbug yall) mid-dunk for Gatorade. To see work from photographers like Brad Ogbonna @bradogbonna and Kennedi Carter @internetbby, and a photo of Team Onyx from Worlds Toughest Race: EcoChallenge Fiji. We are getting closer, but there is much work to do. This essay was hard but there is great rejoicing for me in these pages because the people in these pages are getting PAID--not in gear, but in actual money, which is what I asked for in my Outdoor Retailer editorial letter. What do you think about Madonna’s aging? I suspect 50’s photo is after a good amount of fillers while 60’s (62 to be precise) is after a facelift. My viewpoint is that there comes a time when you reach a crossroads: ↗️ use fillers/non-surgical means to improve the signs of aging but understand that while you will look better, it’s not possible to get back to what you looked like 15 years ago. If you try too hard with fillers at that point, you will not look better, just weird. Caminaba con ansias esas dos cuadras que separan mi casa de la tienda sabiendo que detrás del mostrador del almacén me esperaba Rolo con un grito de cancha: “QUE DICE EL HINCHA NÚMERO UNO DE LA ACADEMIA. Acto seguido metía la mano en una bolsa y sacaba un puñal de caramelos sugus. Apoyaba los carmelos sobre la mesada y si había alguno colorado lo apartaba. Me miraba y se reía los rojos son para los amargos. Me acuerdo que el primer gorro de la academia que tuve me lo regaló Patricia, la chica que ayudaba en casa con las tareas domésticas, cuando cumplí cuatro años. Ella pensó que era un gorro de Argentina ( bendita confusión ). Typewriter, paper. 7 pages. 29,903 characters. • This took me over a week to complete; having split the characters into seven pages I averaged a page a day, working on it for an hour or two at a time. • I was initially drawn to the idea of doing this as a way to explore my love for repeating patterns, in order to see what other patterns they might reveal, and as a way to pick apart and potentially understand this thing thats causing such unprecedented disruption, confusion and sadness in the world. The letters themselves are harmless; the virus they contain the malevolent agent, and the social upheaval surrounding it being a much farther reaching, deeper and more subtle sting, along with a surge of positive communal action and a unplanned moment of rest and reflection for much of the world. • I found the visual patterns within the text to be very faint, with the ink densities of each letter being almost the same, meaning theres a visual uniformity to the piece. However, you blur your eyes, I feel that what patterns are there perhaps reflect that of the DNA double helix itself, with graceful curves running faintly down the text. The result, in this format, I feel is fitting to the subject matter; a dumb block, a monolith, a code containing the thing that we must conquer, both medically and socially. • The project became a way to focus each day, to have something to achieve. A way to centre myself. And as I became more familiar with the letters, their groupings and the beat of their repetition, I began falling into a state of deep focus when typing, becoming more and more able to type from my reference material with confidence. The more concentrated and relaxed I became, the more meditative my state, in which I recognised moments of wandering thought as the times when I would make a mistake, and refocus in order to continue. It’s when we can discover that purpose and harness the good in it that we have potential for making a difference. No matter how big or small. . . . Each of my births was so different. And yet four of them shared such an important similarity...my babies entered the world bum first. Thousands of you in #breechnation have experienced the same thing. Even more of you have experienced birth, period. Breech isn’t any scarier than head-down birth. Let’s be honest....whether vertex or breech it’s still pushing a human out of your hoohah or having one lifted out of your belly. It’s scary no matter what! . . . And on top of that, a mama doesn’t need professional care providers heaping more anxiety onto her plate. Many of them do though and usually it’s because they haven’t been educated in breech delivery. Their training was non-existent and so breech birth was grouped into that “emergency” category. Can’t blame people who haven’t learned yet. I have faith that this will shift over the next few years. I know more breech training has started already in grass-roots circles. A change is in the air. I’m honored to be part of that change. . . .
