There are multiple major wildfires burning in the L.A. region. In the Angeles National Forest above Azusa, the Bobcat Fire has burned nearly 11,500 acres with 0% containment. Evacuation warnings have gone out to residents in nearby communities. In the San Bernardino Mountains, there’s the El Dorado fire — that’s the one sparked by a gender reveal party. It’s burned 11,479 acres so far. There’s is also the danger of additional fires as the Santa Ana winds blow into town . A red flag warning is in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday for parts of L.A. County and Ventura County. So far in 2020, California’s had 7,606 wildfires and lost 2.3 million acres. And it’s only September (in all of 2019, there were just under 5,000 fires, and the state lost 118,000 acres). Follow us for the latest fire news. DARK AND SCARY.... our first bad choice of #park4night📍spots but we didn’t hang around long! Feeling a little flat because we know we need to turn and head towards home we didn’t plan our night very well. The TeamGo driver didn’t want to stop for the night until we’d filled the tank up and was so focused on that task that we assumed in quite a blase fashion that “we’d find somewhere” leaving the final choice to him. Epic mistake. We pulled up to the closest @park4night spot as darkness fell, pulled up the blinds but left the windows ajar to keep us cool. “Is that a good idea?” He asks but little man and myself are pretty relaxed. It’s not the nicest spot but we figure we’ll just get snuggled up in bed and settle in for the night. UNTIL WE SMELL SMOKE. Someone’s out there! We can’t see further than a couple of metres but I reassure them I’m sure it’s just some other campers. Then we hear movement, we hear foot steps crunching on the ground but we can’t see anyone and there’s a distinct lack of voices. Heart breaking photos coming out of Detroit, Oregon. We had a second crew deploy there last night. But out of the horror, some incredible stories of generosity have risen. The Aurora Fire District donated a fully stocked fire engine to Detroit-Idanha Fire Department after several of their apparatus were destroyed and several of their volunteer firefighters lost their homes. From a smoky night in North Bend. Wasn’t planning on shooting this particular evening, but I came across this road and pasture and had to grab a couple images. The horses in slides 3-5 stood almost completely still for the full 1.5 minute exposure, which was a pleasant surprise. Good morning from the inside of a house to wherever you are. It’s good to have a house, to be safe in this time and to be connected by any means possible. In this case through the internet and thanks to @Equallens. I placed 2nd runner up in their recent competition with my images of Jane ironing and Woody watching the Space X launch (scroll down to see those). I am grateful for all of this. However, possibly like you, I did not used to spend this much time inside houses or on the internet. Before March I preferred to be on the street on my feet making portraits of strangers and writing about those connections (see @gmotophotos), on a motorcycle traversing landscapes (@hengetohenge), or on a tour bus documenting the impact a musician has on her audience and the impact the tour had on her (@amandapalmer). My name is Gabrielle Motola and I’m a photographer and writer based in London having been here since 2000 (from NYC) with a five year sojourn in Iceland. There I wrote the story-picture-book “An Equal Difference” (@anequaldifference) about equality, society and the individual, inspired by the ideas I discovered through portraits and interviews with some of the great minds there. I begin my three day takeover of this account in Iceland. I’ll take you to the Faroe Islands by motorcycle, across Europe and back to London where I’ll bring you to the street to meet some strangers. People are my preferred subjects, but the time I spent in Iceland drew me to landscapes. My work is about connection; our desire for it, the joy it brings, but also our fear of having it and losing it. This image from the chapter “On Pools” was made in the geothermally heated Secret Lagoon in Fludir. The lagoon isn’t so much of a secret anymore but when this photograph was made, it was far less crowded. The geothermal energy of Iceland is one of gifts of the earth and makes their bathing culture (and more) possible, enjoyable, and even essential. During lockdown their pools and bathing areas were closed for six weeks. I was told recently that Icelanders didn’t realise until now just how important bathing and swimming were to their daily lives. England has pubs. Iceland has hot tubs. - @equallens on Instagram

En octubre del 2019 se realizó el Primer Festival Internacional de Fotografía de Valdivia, en el que participaron destacados exponentes de esta disciplina. ⠀ El evento fue organizado por Carlos Fischer (director general), Claudio Albarrán (productor general), Carolina Candia Antich (directora artística/curadora), Anna Da Sacco (productora artística/curadora) y un gran equipo de profesionales. ⠀ Entre los artistas seleccionados/as se contaron Antar Fernández, Claudio Lavado, Eduardo Asenjo, Fernando Aceña, Jano Soto Cossio, Martín Cordúa, Valeria Lopetegui y Cristián Arriagada, ganador de la beca Wabi Sabi, otorgada por Romina Resuche en el marco del premio FIFVAL. ⠀ En el encuentro valdiviano fueron expuestas obras que exploran, entre otros aspectos, las aperturas que desarrolla la fotografía hacia otras formas expresivas en el área de las artes de la visualidad. Al mismo tiempo, el festival permitió reflexionar en torno al territorio y los espacios locales como entorno para la expresión artística. ⠀ Es precisamente esta mirada que pone foco en el entorno inmediato la que adquiere singular relevancia en los días presentes, marcados por el confinamiento impuesto por la pandemia. Las inéditas circunstancias que vivimos en la actualidad hacen que nuestra mirada se vuelque con mayor interés y una curiosidad nueva en los espacios personales y locales, lo que abre un espacio de gran interés para la reflexión artística. Captured a lovely sunset image right here a few nights ago. It will go down here again tonight—we just won’t see it. This is this afternoon and the Inlet is covered in this haze to the point where I was struggling to see the other side. This ain’t no fog…this is smoke from the West Coast burning up south of here in Washington State, Oregon, and Cali. We’re not waiting for climate change any more; we’re right in the middle of it. This is an emergency and there’s nothing political about it. I’ve spent the last year taking in ‘the back roads’ around where I live (the paths less trodden). I’ve been drawn to places in my mind and at first I couldn’t figure out why. Driving is one of the things that allows me to visualise and compartmentalise my filmmaking (that or the shower). It’s time alone to dive deep and power up ideas. Dusk hours add even more magic and murky weather is like a lightning bolt to the brain. It’s the same with Autumn/Winter, and while many repeat the same mundane objections to the seasons and ‘what they miss from summer’, I try and use what’s on display. Eventually it dawned on me that my feature film features a character that is totally isolated most of the time; he lives remotely on a fairly dark landscape. So figuratively I’ve been subliminally in deep research for a while. Lockdown has been the icing on this research. We begin writing (@hurryupuniverse and myself) on Sept 18th in an ‘official’ capacity and I have no doubt the images I’ve shot are going to play a part. All that’s missing are some mountains... That research is to come. But I felt the chill of Autumn today and despite my frustrations at living a half life I’m ready for the season change and what it brings. i’m scared to live a life without pain and darkness. i’m not sure how a life like that even feels. the truth is i have spent years mourning the loss of the happy girl i once was that now it’s gotten to the point where i no longer seem to know what happiness truly means. i guess maybe that’s why, i am constantly searching for reasons to not be happy; it’s like the thought of being happy just doesn’t make sense within my mind. i wish it did but how can it when my mind is full of scars and memories from battles i have fought that have broken me. i know it probably sounds so stupid that i am trying to hold onto a sadness which has ruined me completely but i guess it’s because this is the only thing i really know. it’s the only thing i can be so sure of staying. i have spent years fighting to hold on to the rails of life whilst this agonising pain tries to drown me to my death. this pain is the only thing that has stayed through everything. but it wasn’t always like this. i remember a time where i was so full of life. i was happy and believed that was how i would forever be. i was so innocent and naive to think that would be my forever. because it wasn’t. one day a deadly storm came, stealing away viciously from me the life i once had and in the process i lost myself completely. i don’t even know who i am anymore. all i know is that i’m not the woman i once was. instead i’m just some broken mess waiting for her life to be over in hope of maybe finally finding some peace, in her death. - 3am.wordss - @3am.wordss on Instagram
