September 15 through October 15 marks Hispanic Heritage Month. As we celebrate influential Latinx individuals like Frida Kahlo (Mexican painter known for her self portraits), Roberto Clemente (the first Latin American/Carribean American baseball player to win a World Series as a starting player), Ellen Ochoa (the first Hispanic female astronaut), Sonia Soyomayor (the first Hispanic American to serve on the Supreme Court), Selena Quintanilla-Pérez (famous Mexican American singer and musician), to current politicians and household names like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ted Cruz, and Marco Rubio, we’d like to take a moment to introduce you to Pura Belpré, New York City’s and the New York Public Library’s first Puerto Rican librarian. Pura Belpré began her library career in 1921 as the Hispanic Assistant in a branch of the public library in Harlem, where she pioneered services to Harlem’s growing Hispanic community by creating bilingual story hours, buying Spanish language books, and implementing programs based on traditional and cultural holidays at several of the NYPL’s branches. She later went on to write children’s books and translated and published several Puerto Rican folktales. In 1996, the American Library Association and the Association for Library Service to Children established the Pura Belpré Award, a childrens book award presented to the Latinx writer and illustrator whose work “best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latinx cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth” as an homage to Belpré and her work for the Hispanic community of New York City. As we continue to count down to the end of our Kickstarter campaign, wed like to share some more about the virtual art workshops, inspired by Sister Corita Kents PLORK (play + work) happenings, that will be taking place later this autumn. These events will be made available to all backers, at all levels: a celebration of the community that has come together to support us, through art-making. What better way to celebrate? The idea for this workshop is inspired by Sister Corita Kent, a truly radical nun, as well as an artist, activist, and teacher, who is the subject of our spring 2021 book, MAKE MEATBALLS SING. Written by Matthew Burgess, author of DRAWING ON WALLS and ENORMOUS SMALLNESS, and illustrated by multimedia artist and educator Kara Kramer, this spirited and colorful biography draws readers into the life of a singular woman whose way of living invites us all to see the potential for making, creating, and finding joy in the everyday, while questioning the structures of society. Inspired by the political climate of the 1960s, Coritas artwork, through bold and accessible images, urged viewers to face injustice head-on. Sister Corita specifically devised the concept of PLORKing in acknowledgement of the creative block that can plague the artistic process. She encouraged pure fun, as a means to spark an idea or memory or thought, so that the fun times prove to be marvelous resources and research. She viewed play as an invaluable and essential part of making creative work, hence, the portmanteau PLORK: recognizing the union of playing and working as one responsible and necessary for human advancement. Mewar - Maratha Relations: Hurda Conference A conference of the important Rajput Kings was convened at village Hurda (Bhilwara) to devise measures to keep the Marathas away and also to decide the course of possible action to be adopted against them. On 17th July 1734 CE, the conference was held under the chairmanship of the Maharana of Mewar; Jagat Singh II in which the rulers of Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kota, Bikaner, Kishangarh and Nagore participated. At this conference, the following points were unanimously agreed to: The rulers would be companions of each other during the struggle against the Marathas. No one shall give refuge to the enemies of another kingdom. After monsoon, the affairs shall commence, all the Chiefs will assemble at Rampura and if the king could not attend, they will send their heir apparent or other dignitaries. The ruler of that respective kingdom will sort out any dispute created within his own kingdom and no other ruler shall interfere. My grandparents came to the UK in the 70s, and worked for the NHS until their retirement. Being Indian, but born in Britain, sometimes I feel like I’m straddling two complex and intangible identities, especially when I’m confronted with questions like ’Where are you REALLY from?’ or asked why I’m brown, but have a ‘white’ surname. Like so many, the British empire and its lasting effects in India is entangled in my identity. But there is still a sense of national amnesia when it comes to Britain’s imperial past, an unwillingness to acknowledge what colonialism did and how its legacy lives on today. A false and romanticised version of events is still ingrained in our national story and rooted in our culture. This was clear just yesterday when our PM Boris Johnson proclaimed that we should end our ‘cringing national embarrassment about our history’, encouraging patriotic pride in Britain’s involvement in slavery and colonialism. I *wish* his opinion was uncommon, but a survey found that 59% of the British population think that the atrocities of empire were “something to be proud of”. (YouGov, 2014) It’s kind of unsurprising when you think about how much of our colonial history has been filtered or consciously covered up (google Operation Legacy). Our school curriculum excludes the ‘ugly’ bits of our national past, and this erasure perpetuates white supremacy in our education system and minimises past injustice and racism - further marginalising those whose ancestors have suffered because of it. This year research found that only 9% of GCSE students have studied modules that reference the British empire, and only 11% study modules that acknowledge Black people’s contribution to Britain. It was only when I started studying history at university that I really began to learn the full extent of British imperialism and its ongoing legacy - and there’s still SO much I don’t know. (ibid 31:19) These were G-ds words to Moshe at the conclusion of the previous Torah reading, Vayelech. Haazinu - listen, (literally, give ear), is the song that Moshe composed as the hours and minutes of his life were growing less and less. What song would you compose on your final hours if so instructed by G-d? Moshe chose to write about his two great loves - the people of Israel and the G-d of Israel. Moshe, himself, does not factor into his own song. Listen, O heavens, and I will speak! And let the earth hear the words of my mouth! Bear witness to my words, O heaven and earth, witness to G-d who created you, and to Israel, for whose benefit and blessing you were created. Moshes song is directed both to G-d and to Israel. The forty three verse song is built upon a dichotomy. Its opening and closing verses praise the power and perfection of G-d. The intervening verses point out the imperfection of Israel. Verses four through six of the song Haazinu, set forth the underlying message of the song: The deeds of the Mighty Rock are perfect, for all His ways are just; a faithful G-d, without injustice He is righteous and upright... So often, workers are only cast as victims - we want to make sure to tell the story of how they are leading the way to justice. We start with Swatee, who interviews Monika from the Solidarity Centre to understand what organising actually is, a few stories of what successful organising looks like, and what a consumer’s role is to enable change. Then we hear a bit of the activist journey of Chamila, leader of the Dabindu Collective, a garment workers collective in Sri Lanka. From there, Devi speaks with Annanya, from the Asia Floor Wage Alliance, who explains the connections between the individual worker, to the union, to the regional alliance, to the global movement to transform the future of fashion. 🌕 VU LAN FESTIVAL - Vietnamese Day of Filial Piety and Mercy - Artwork by @hieusicula - 🌾 The Vu Lan Festival, also known as Vu Lan Bồn (盂蘭盆), is a Vietnamese traditional Mahayana Buddhist festival held on the Middle Primary occasion (i.e. the full moon day of the Seventh month in the Vietnamese lunar calendar). This is the time for people to show filial piety towards deceased and living parents, as well as show mercy towards the beings suffering the exile of hunger. This festival originates from the Vu Lan Bồn sutra. The story is about Bhikkhu Mục Kiền Liên and his quest to liberate his mother from her reincarnation as a hungry ghost (ngạ quỷ). That reincarnation is due to the accumulation of many evil karma she has created. 🌺 VU LAN FESTIVAL IN HISTORY • Filial Piety towards the ancestors The spirit of the Vu Lan festival in Vietnam is to pray for deceased parents as a way to offer filial piety. For example, let’s read this paragraph in the “Complete Annals of Đại Việt” about the Vu Lan festival in 1118 under the reign of Emperor Lý Nhân Tông: “Autumn, the Seventh month, a feast of the Middle Primary festival is hosted because it coincided with the Vu Lan Bồn ceremony [to pray for the salvation of the soul] for Linh Nhân Imperial Empress Dowager.” (1). About the Vu Lan festival in 1128, under the reign of his son, Emperor Lý Thần Tông, the text is as following: “Autumn, the Seventh month, the Middle Primary occasion, the Emperor stayed in Thiên An hall, for the the mandarin to commend. Adapun orang yang menemanimu dengan kebodohannya, dia bukanlah sahabat sejati, karena dia tidak kuasa melihat kekurangan dan aibmu. Dia tak akan mampu bersabar menanggungnya, meskipun bersabar pasti ada maksud dan tujuan yang diinginkannya. Maka sebaik-baik sahabat sejati adalah orang yang tidak menuntut apa pun darimu. Seperti itulah persahabatan Tuhanmu atau orang-orang yang berakhlak seperti akhlak-Nya. #daughtersday 𝙐𝙩𝙝 𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙞 𝙟𝙖𝙖𝙣 𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙖𝙩𝙝 𝙝𝙞 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙣𝙖 𝙝𝙖𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙪𝙟𝙝𝙚 Shabana Azmi shared a special bond with her Abba Kaifi Azmi, the legendary poet. Her earliest memories of her Abba was him sitting on a writing table in his white kurta-pyjama smoking incessantly and writing in the wee hours of the morning. As a child, she was convinced poet was a euphemism for people who dont work! Living in Red Flag Hall, a commune like flat of the Communist Party of India meant the family lived frugally. Her mother Shaukat Azmi worked in Prithvi Thearte and in her absence her Abba fed, bathed and looked after the children. Her mother often rehearsed her lines spontaneously in front of dhobi, cook etc. Shabana got petrified and assumed her mother is turning insane. Her father dropped his work and took her for long walk on beach, he explained to her, her mother has not enough time to rehearse and as a family it is their duty to support her. Shabana was embarrassed about her father while growing up since Kaifi never wore in western clothes or could speak English. It was years later, Shabana finally realised the grandeur of her father. When she finally confided in her father she wants to act, he said I will support you in whatever you choose to do. If you want to become a shoemaker (moochi) I will support you provided you tell yourself that you will try to become the best moochi in the business. One of the heart warming incidence between father and daughter is related to mangoes. When Shabana was young she brought a bag full of mangoes from her friend. Kaifi noticed this but did not say a word. It was 1950s and the family was living frugally. For #HispanicHeritageMonth, were exploring the history of @sociosensalud, as Partners In Health is known in Peru.⠀ ⠀ 1️⃣ Father Jack Roussin, Dr. Jaime Bayona, Dr. Paul Farmer, Dr. Jim Kim, and Ophelia Dahl founded Socios En Salud in September of 1994.⠀ 2️⃣ In 1994, Father Jack brought together 12 people in Carabayllo, one of Lima’s poorest districts, to find the primary problems affecting their community.⠀ 3️⃣ On July 8th, 1996, Socios En Salud became official when a few doctors, medical students, nurses and a secretary joined the cause. ⠀ 4️⃣ Clinical support isn’t the only thing SES workers do, they make frequent house visits to provide support in any way possible. ⠀ 5️⃣ SES workers worked to address basic social determinants of health by providing support in nutrition, housing, transportation, clinical cost, education and employment. ⠀ 6️⃣ In 1999, the first group of 75 Multidrug-resistant (MDR) TB patients finished treatment with a high cure rate of 83% (the highest in the world at the time).⠀ 7️⃣ MDR-TB—previously a death sentence—was shown to the world to be treatable in a resource-poor setting. It was a powerful message that even in its deadliest form, we can cure this disease.⠀ 8️⃣ 24 years after SES was founded, it has grown to nearly 500 employees and reached thousands of beneficiaries in Peru.
