Restauración República 550. Entregada en comodato a la Corporación del Patrimonio Religioso y Cultural, fue sede de la Dina y residencia okupa. La muestra, proyectada para el 2020, buscará dar un testimonio de paz. Es una casa donde ha ocurrido de todo. Partió como el hogar de la familia del arquitecto Josué Smith Solar, quien la construyó en 1924 con la elegancia del estilo Tudor. Luego perteneció a la familia Irarrázabal, y después, hogar universitario. Pero hoy sus marcas visibles vienen de una etapa más reciente. Fue centro de detención y oficina del general Manuel Contreras, jefe de la Dina, y, tras pasar años deshabitada, fue tomada por okupas en 2005, quienes crearon allí el Centro Cultural Aki, alternativo y anarco, pero de mucha vitalidad. Tras ser desalojados en 2009 -y luego de un nuevo período vacía-, el Serviu la entregó en comodato a la Corporación del Patrimonio Religioso y Cultural por 30 años. Ahora, la casa de calle República 550 está en proceso de restauración. El deterioro es evidente en el segundo y tercer piso y en el subterráneo, pero en el primer piso -hoy atiborrado de muebles que aún no han sido dispuestos- ya es posible ver los avances de una recuperación que ha sido lenta. La Corporación estima en unos 900 millones de pesos el presupuesto para arreglar todo, pero por ahora la ambición es que los antiguos espacios del living, comedor y escritorio queden aptos para dar pie al proyecto cultural que buscan realizar ahí. Revisar las instalaciones eléctricas y sanitarias y reconstruir los baños son las tareas que aún faltan. Un primer apronte será la muestra Ecos... confesiones de una casa, que reunirá a 15 artistas nacionales que intervendrán 15 piezas de la casa. El Mercurio. The Austin-Wherritt House c.1903. This elaborate home was originally built for John Ezra and Sarah (Sadie) Austin by local stonemason Herbert Clegg. The beautiful sandstone home was one of the finest homes in the city. John Austin moved to Heber City in 1893 and became a very successful livestock dealer and rancher. The Austin family only lived in the home a few years before leaving to pursue further livestock business in Wyoming. In 1908 the town doctor William Russell Wherritt and his wife Emma purchased the home for their family. Dr. Wherritt was well known and respected for the 49 years he worked as a physician in Heber City. Many of those years he was the only doctor in town and was always available for the community. He served as the quarantine physician for many years as well as the railroad doctor. He had an office in his home, but most often would make house calls. His wife Emma was also very involved in community affairs and was chosen Utah “mother of the year” in 1961. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and still remains in the Wherritt family. It remains very much the same and has been meticulously cared for by the members of the family.
