The station grew out of Fort Worths first radio station, also called WBAP, established in 1922 by Amon Carter, owner of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Although what happened overnight set in motion the events of the following day, the greatest losses started in the early morning hours of June 1st. The gun battle that lasted throughout the night kept immediate threats to black Tulsa at bay but by daybreak the tables started to turn in the most disastrous way. Many Greenwood citizens either fled for safety or were defending their property until being outnumbered by the oncoming mob. Some escaped unharmed while others who peacefully surrendered were still shot. Police and National Guard began taking the remaining blacks into protective custody but in the process left Greenwood vulnerable to all out attack. As the white mob marched into Greenwood from all sides, their mission seemed clear: after looting the properties, they were to be set on fire. This was repeated until 40 blocks of Tulsa was reduced to rubble and ash. *These photographs were taken on June 1, 1921. I will be sharing more of these in an exhibit called “21 for ‘21” opening January 1, 2021 at @bws.gallery . The exhibition will showcase 21 composite images from the 1921 #tulsaracemassacre. Heres a newly renovated William Krisel designed home. (Model 14-A) About 3 - 4 were constructed and easily identified by their distinctive array of open air beams that allows light to drench the front of the home in all directions. 14As were designed with sunwell glass walled bathrooms which act like mini atriums next to the tub to let natural light into the inner parts of the home. They also were designed with sliding glass front doorways once the resident passed through the front patio gate. Quite remarkable!!! Our client, @mlupick, brought in a Kodak Brownie 620 which her grandmother gave her dad in 1959. As a young lad in Terrace BC he shot one roll of Kodak BW film in it, left the film in the camera and never used it again. Here we are 60 years later and hoping to develop the film to see what comes of it. YES, Success!!! The film was a bit thin from all the years of latent image aging but with some push processing and a touch of photoshop we managed to get quite remarkable images out of it. Mallory, Dad and grandma were surprised and thrilled to see the results.
