There is no wrong time of year to imbibe Lambrusco. Seriously. I am thankful that most wine (and beer) consumers have looked well-past the stereotype of Lambrusco being a cheap, sweet fizzy wine. In fact, the world of Lambrusco is so diverse, the US has not even scratched the surface. There are so many different types of Lambrusco grapes in Emilia, Italy, but we most commonly see the Grasparossa and Sorbara clones in our market. The wines work so amazingly on the dinner table (and lunch, brunch and breakfast tables too) but especially go well with salty and smoky foods like charcuterie and cheese and red sauce pizza. We come to you with an experimental different from the rest; one Otherside holds close to our heart, the Caudwell Stout - a tribute to a legendary man, and his favourite beer. A classic Australian stout from the days before craft. No frills, no adjuncts, an easy-drinking old school beer with low roast character. Paul Caudwell has been a luminary in WA beer for many years, leading the install and upkeep of many local breweries behind the scenes. We decided to make a tribute to him by replicating the stout he drank as a young fella growing up in Kalgoorlie. The meaning of Craft Beer to us has always meant being able to try new things, push the boundaries of tradition, and never be complacent to the status quo. Thinking outside the can, if you will. Our experimental series allows us to do just that. Experiment. Instead of giving these beers names, we simply wanted to number them as a chronological reference. They may develop into a staple offering, or may go away forever, but having the ability to try new things is what defines this incredible Industry. one is the first in this family, and while not necessarily cutting edge, its something weve been wanting to do for a while. one is a bi-coastal hybrid 7.6% Double IPA. We love the bright, clean, crisp qualities of West Coast IPAs, but also love the fruity, less bitter, soft New England counterparts. Therefore, we brewed this DIPA using a yeast typically known as Chico for its bright clean character, added our first dry hop addition a little later in the fermentation process, and blasted this beast with a TRIPLE DRY HOPPED portion of both traditional and new school hops, including Amarillo, Azacca, Cascade, Citra, Eureka, Idaho 7, Mosaic, and Simcoe!! Yes, 8 hops! We are very pleased with how fruit forward this beer is, while capturing the beautiful dank and resinous qualities of a West Coast IPA, but with a soft, smooth, and subtle bitterness. All while being totally refreshing and crushable. Now lets see whos paying attention... one will be available this Saturday September 19th at our Grand Opening. We will be offering online pre-sales later this week, along with Island Sunset, Berry Blast, and Chasm, for Saturday pick up, opening at 10am. BEER RELEASE: FRIDAY 25/09 🎉 This week we have two x beers to release, and it’s party time. A variation and a classic. First up is DDH House Party! 1️⃣ Weve gone hard on one of our most loved IPA recipes and given House Party the double dry-hop treatment. Doubling up on Citra and Amarillo and supercharging with Mosaic Cryo for extra hop intensity. A simple malt bill made up of predominantly extra pale and oats brings a light orange colour with plenty of body. Intense aromas of mango, tangerine and papaya swirl together for a wave of full on tropical notes. On the palate the juiciness continues with a big hit of mango up front, with smooth melon and citrus rounding out the finish. The backend is dry, juicy and soft but with a hint of bitterness that keeps you coming back. We wouldnt recommend drinking it from a red cup but we wont tell if you wont. 2️⃣ A fresh batch of C R I S P. Crisp is an evolving unfiltered lager style beer. We have brewed this batch with German malts and hops and fermented long and cold with a Czech yeast strain. This beer is ultimately crushable. It is very pale in colour, with a fluorescent white head. It has a smooth malt profile, backed up by a slight hop bitterness and crisp and ultra refreshing finish. The days are getting warmer and the need for a refreshing and crispy lager is growing. Our Black is Beautiful release is available this week! Pre-order now at the link in bio. When Weathered Souls Brewing in San Antonio, TX announced the nationwide collaboration initiative known as Black Is Beautiful we immediately knew we wanted to join in. The beer itself is open source, with the recipe, label design and more all being provided to whoever wants to brew it. We knew we wanted to do something different for this one and what we settled on was to not be different at all. The base beer is a huge imperial stout with NO ADJUNCTS! We kept it simple and mashed in this massive beer with over 800 lbs of grain, no sugar additions, a simple hoping schedule for balance and our house yeast for fermentation. While there are no adjuncts in this beer we still get incredible notes of melted candy bars, fresh brewed coffee, chocolate ice cream, caramel sauce drizzle and roasty, toasty bread. 100% of the proceeds of this beer will be donated to @naacp Legal Defense Fund. I first met Alanna Lagamba as the partner of Martin “Marto” Worner. Canadian by birth, having arrived to Flonheim by way of Berlin, Alanna is now a burgeoning winemaker in her own right. In 2019, she made a single, gently sparkling red wine, “Frauen Power”, which is composed of 100% Dornfelder from Martin’s vines. If there’s one thing that keeps me in the natural wine trade, it’s the radical energy of young winemakers like Alanna and Marto. Frauen Power isn’t made from “noble” grapes and doesn’t correspond to any special ancestral tradition of the Rheinhessen. Its vigorous bubbles and brash aromatics are hallmarks of a young winemaker taking big risks to try out insane ideas. And despite all of this - or maybe because of it - it’s hard to drink this wine without smiling. It’s also hard to keep the wine in the bottle for much longer than 10 minutes. Right – who’s the genius who decided that #InternationalBeerDay should be the day immediately following #NationalIPADay? Can’t we spread this stuff out a bit better? . Ah well, I guess it’s a good excuse to post about another recent delivery, this one a mixed flat from Kitchener’s Red Circle Brewing (@drinkredcircle) that co-owner and brewmaster Brett Croft kindly dropped off when he was in Toronto last week. . As the cans in the photo indicate, Red Circle tends to focus on traditional styles ideal for everyday drinkin’, which is frankly pretty refreshing in these days of lactose-ridden IPAs and fruit salad concoctions that might explode if you don’t keep them refrigerated. Even the Blackberry IPA brewed in collaboration with Willibald Farm Brewery (@DrinkWillibald) is a subtle and balanced take on a fruit-infused beer. . Of the four, my favourite would be down to a coin toss between Iron Horse Trail IPA and Crystal Park Pilsner, both of them textbook takes on their respective West Coast IPA and German Pilsner styles.
