We are extremely excited to announce that ISSUE 3 of Oxford is my Home: The Lockdown Edition is now available on www.oxfordismyhome.co.uk As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020, our homes have been transformed. Bedrooms have become offices, living rooms have become classrooms, gardens have become gyms, and every house has become a cage of sorts. Some people without a home have found one whilst others have been evicted, and many, many people live with the uncertainty of not being able to afford to keep theirs. ‘Oxford is My Home’ is a zine produced by Oxford Poetry Library and Open House Oxford which uses words and pictures to tell the hidden stories of housing and homelessness in Oxford and what it means to call this city ‘home’. For the last 15 years of my life I have identified with the concepts I am about to share with you, since my first protest in front of my local corrupt police station in Greensboro NC when I was just 15 years old. I began my work against oppression in the context of fighting police power, this photo was from my first arrest nine years ago fighting for this cause. Personally I want to imagine a world where radical transformation is actualized through collective liberation from systemic oppression. I envision a new relationship of the human being and the planet where we share resources without exploitation or selfish abuse of the earth. I aim to live in a world where peace, respect, humility, equality, music, art, poetry, love and justice form the core of what constitutes the everyday reality of human existence. I value the dignity of every individual. I wish to balance respect for the individual with the need to act in solidarity. I am committed to non-hierarchical direct democratic participation, sharing power, nurturing healthy leadership and collective liberation. I believe in commitment and accountability, with radical trust, transparency, and open, respectful communications. I respect and love the Earth. (2/3) In @Aleeplazass second post for Fast, we asked her to re-imagine the Fast brand. Anything was fair game, no restrictions. She said when she thought of Fast, she thought of two things: Immediacy and delight. This reminded her of the claw games that we all used to play as kids. The ones where you could win a stuffed animal by picking it up and dropping it down the chute. Alee remembered when she was young she would go to game rooms, insert a coin, and in a matter of seconds she would walk about with a brand new stuffed animal. She wanted to capture that experience in this illustration. You’ll notice her signature bold colors and exaggerated features, creating an atmosphere that is again just “adjacent to reality.” In the Fast Checkout version of the claw game the big red button has been replaced with a mouse, the claw with a hand, and the stuffed animals with everything for sale on the entire internet. We love this analogy because it takes a broken aspect of online shopping (having to repeatedly fill out forms) and turned it into a process that people actually enjoy. And in Alee’s version it takes longer to decide what you want to buy than it does to actually buy the item (which is true of Fast Checkout). Essential eyewear for essential workers When COVID-19 struck NYC in March, we had to shutter all of our stores and close our operations to keep our staff and patients safe. However, we saw that essential workers were in need of PPE and were leaving their eyes especially exposed. We wanted to help. We immediately contacted our friends at Hoya Optical to see if they could provide lenses and reached out to our patients to see which organizations we could help. On May 28th, we delivered 200 pairs of Mott and Bayard glasses to essential workers at the Montifore Medical Rehab Center in the Bronx and to the Queens Center of Progress. Eyewear adds an extra layer of protection to prevent droplets from entering your eyes and we are happy to help contribute to essential workers’ protection. We would like to thank our lens partner, Hoya, for providing the lens and the lab service, Thea Cohen at Montefiore, and Dainty at the Queens Center of Progress in coordinating with us to deliver these glasses to our essential worker heroes.
