LABOR DAY...Its not just a paid day off from work! . Its funny this past Friday while running around town I heard many a person speak of Labor Day... . They spoke of the paid day off from work...the BBQ they were going to have...the long weekend vacation they were going to take...etc. . But as I looked around and listened...I had a different feeling come to mind about Labor Day. . To me Labor Day is a holiday to dedicated to the social and economic achievements of the American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of the companies we work in...as well as, building up our great country, the United States of America! . When I look at the absolutely amazing people I get to work with daily...I truly feel blessed beyond words! And through their hard work we have to grown our work family to almost 60 people...for which I feel even more grateful than ever! . On the car ride to Barnabas my sister and I were talking about camp and campers and I told her wouldn’t it be so cool if they paired me with Zac again. Then it turns out they give me my welcome packet and guess who’s name was on it Zac! I’m couldn’t contain my excitement as I was just so ready to hug and be reunited. When I saw Zac’s face his jaw dropped as later I asked him what he thought and he felt like this was all a dream- that the lord allowed us to be together again. Four generations 💕 While I was home, I finally got to take Lorelai over to my grandmas so they could meet, and when I say it was the sweetest thing, I’m not exaggerating. As soon as she opened the door she said “I’ll take that baby” and I couldn’t stop smiling. My grandma has always been very special to me, so seeing her lose pieces of herself every time I see her is extremely hard. We’ve known she has dementia for a while now, but seeing her never gets easier for me. Do you ever wonder if you are cut out to be the kind of mother you want your children to have? Do you tell yourself at the end of the day if only I could yell less, decrease the feeling of exhaustion, not be so forgetful, have more time in a day, or get rid of the clutter and chaos...etc______you fill in the blank? If so, let me tell you first you are normal and your are not alone! ⠀ You ARE however probably experiencing a level of burnout! Burnout has as undeniably increased since the pandemic struck earth, but even before COVID-19, parents have been experiencing burnout for years due to workplace stress but also from general life and home stressors. ⠀ I know for a FACT I have experienced long periods of burnout before. Even now, knowing more about how to easily identify it, I still experience varying levels of burnout. I am, however, more equipped to manage it. ⠀ ➡️check in with yourself- ask yourself what outcome you REALLY want and use positive language around what you desire. Ex. Instead of saying...I want to decrease exhaustion, say...I want to feel energized. I want to have more time in my day- say...I will learn to manage my time better. ⠀ ➡️practice self care- get deep and ask your self where you need the MOST attention. Is it mind, body, or soul? Then create a self care routine around your biggest need. Start there before incorporating more self care activities. ⠀ ➡️Be ok asking for help! If you are giving all the time, where have you created space to give to yourself? Create that space by asking for help. If you have family or friends close by- ask if they can lend a hand. If you have a spouse- be vocal and honest about how you have been feeling and create a plan together that offers you some relief! Do not sugar coat it, be honest! If you are both burnt out (hello dual income household with multiple kids during a pandemic)- trade off space and time for you each to fulfill your own needs. ⠀ ➡️prioritize rest- this could be part of your self care, but it deserves an extra shout out! I have noticed some new faces around here, so I wanted to re-introduce myself! Hey, my name is Ali, and I am in the business of preserving love into physical memories. A few of my favorite things include ivy plants because they remind me of my nana, being super organized and having things in order, and hiking in the woods, especially when the light turns extra pretty. I have been a photographer for as long as I can remember. I dont ask for much but Im asking with all my heart for this - that my mother be protected and supported with love as I continue the biggest transition of my life, without her. Shes been living with us almost exclusively since Cairo was born two and a half years ago and its been rough... rougher than rough, its taken my beloved Davana and I past our limit. She has singlehandedly plunged us into the darkest pits of despair and it has felt hopeless at times. If it wasnt for our fam and soulfam I dont know how we would have been able to stay positive. I own my failures in not seeking extra support in the beginning, I was naive to believe it would all work itself out so long as I kept going but Ive been humbled. Having denied it, avoided it, displaced it it feels good to finally come to a place of clarity and acceptance of my responsibility for her care. Part of that is having healthy boundaries with her and holding the truth that I can no longer sacrifice mine and my familys well being by having her live in the same home as us. I know other families have been able to successfully care for their parents with dementia and have found it very fulfilling, but its just not my case. My mother is carrying a lifetime of unprocessed trauma and as her memory continues to fade, so to does her capacity to hold it in. As such I can no longer allow her to project her pain and her fears upon Davana, who has been so good to her. I broke down in tears more than a few times in her inability to receive all the love Davana was giving her. It was so sad to see that she simply couldnt receive it. Yet, we harbor no ill will towards her and rather than resentment for the extra pain shes put our family through, I feel gratitude for the lessons and to know I must take a new approach to caring for her moving forward. Shes in Las Vegas right now near my sister, and is in good spirits. We had a great conversation earlier and she expressed her love for us and I felt it. She misses Cairo but said she doesnt want to be a barrier to us fulfilling our dreams. I let her know she wasnt and that once we find our home and settle in Ill find a place for her not too far. Crazy how life can change in just the blink of an eye.... * * * February 1, 2018 * About 24 hours before this picture was taken, I was woken up to 30+ missed calls from my family, my dad had a massive stroke. I couldn’t breathe and I felt like the entire world stopped. After hours of tears and acceptance of my new normal, my dad was ready to for some special visitors (the grand babies). He was determined to walk on his own (OT was right behind him). My dad was so insistent on holding my nephew (and with a little help from yours truly😉) I saw my Dad as the strong fighter and protector he always has been for our family. As the world navigates our new normal, I’ve learned to accept what I can’t change, focus on my own personal growth and thank God for the amazing friends and family in my life. So what was the impact of alcohol free 2019 on me and my life? - realising and breaking all the associations with alcohol I didn’t know I had, massive improvement in mental clarity and focus, more time and energy for what really matters to me and makes me happy, increased productivity and awareness, improved health and contribution to losing over 20kg’s, more time being present and grateful, appreciate life and people more, a great sense of accomplishment, pride, integrity and that my word has power. I got to enjoy so many magical moments with loved ones where I was truly present and I’m so very excited for 2020 and to make this remarkable human @smilelikeyoumeanit77 my wife in February and then travel Italy and France with my new wife, our 1 year old son and my incredible daughter @kayley.jay. Thank you to so many for your support along the way. @smilelikeyoumeanit77 even did the first 6 months of 2019 with me after doing 9 months whilst pregnant in 2018!! For anyone looking to make a powerful change and difference in their life where drinking is a habit that you’re not aware how much it impacts your life, health, relationships and finances, go for it.
