Usually small fish like these are quickly eaten by larger fish but they can survive as a group because of the help of a red big fish called Cephalopholis Sonnerati that is in the center of the picture. He chases the larger fish away from the school. Even though he protects the school of the small fish from larger fish, he eats the small fish as well. There is a message in this picture that through āThe law of the Jungleā they help each other to survive. Our Orangelined Triggerfish is anything but camera-shy š· . Also known as the Undulate Triggerfish, these beauties are found throughout the Indo West Pacific area, including the southern Great Barrier Reef...as well as right here in our Fish Gallery! . Triggerfish are named for the trigger mechanism of their dorsal spines. When avoiding predation, the main dorsal spine will snap up, and lock in place with a second a trigger spine. Only when the trigger spine is moved can the main dorsal spine be lowered. This trigger mechanism helps the fish avoid predation in two ways: . ā Firstly, it makes it more difficult for predators to eat the fish with the main dorsal spine standing up. ā And secondly, if the fish is quick enough is can slide into a crack or crevice and lock itself in place using the spine. This makes it much harder for the predator to get the triggerfish out of its hiding place! . The Orangelined Triggerfish has a relatively small mouth with sharp teeth. These teeth keep growing throughout the fishes lifetime and so it is important that they are fed hard-shelled food on a regular basis to wear them down. . EYELESS AXOLOTLS! It appears that as my tiny albino baby got bigger, I discovered that the clear eyes that I thought may be there are actually not there at all! Iām currently seeking some second opinions just to double check, but this little dude could very well be eyeless.
