What time is it? It’s tarantula time! Whoa! Don’t everyone get so excited at once… Fall is tarantula mating season in Arkansas, when males leave their burrows to find a mate. They check out every potential burrow, looking for a female ready to lay eggs in a nest she has prepared. Most of the year, they are more secretive, and will sit in or near the opening of their burrow and wait for potential prey to pass by. Once prey is detected, the tarantula rushes forward, seizing its prey, inserting its fangs, and injecting venom to immobilize it. Beetles, grasshoppers, crickets, and other spiders make up the typical diet of a tarantula. If provoked, the tarantula may inflict a painful bite, similar to that of a bee sting.
