The Helix Nebula was the inspiration for Nush Cole’s submission for the RAS bicentennial quilt square. She explains what drew her to it - and the technique used to create this beauty: “have always been drawn to the Helix Nebula. Im not sure if its because of the beautiful colours or the fact that it resembles an eye. I originally painted it on but that didnt look quite right so I decided to have a go at beading. The beads are from a belt I broke years ago. I thought they might come in useful for something and Im so pleased I finally got to recycle them. Ive had a lot of fun making my square and I learned a lot too. Galaxies come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Perhaps the most famous are the spiral galaxies. Our own Milky Way is a spiral galaxy, along with nearly all other galaxies within our galactic vicinity, including Andromeda. The structures of these galaxies are truly awe inspiring. The complex spiral is one of nature’s most beautiful creations. All you need is time and physics, along with a lot of stars. All of the material in a spiral galaxies orbits around the galactic centre. It was once assumed that the spiral shape was created because stars closer to the galactic centre orbit faster than those further out. This turned out not to be the case, although something similar was happening. Rather than differences in stellar velocity being the cause, it turns out that the spiral arms themselves rotate at varying speeds. When material is exchanged between spiral arms, such as fast moving material moving into a slow moving arm, it hits a kind of wall and begins slowing down. This can compress stellar material, leading to a wave of star formation. Stars are denser than gas clouds, and thus move slower than the surrounding material. Over time, stellar material moves ahead of the stars and compresses, forming more stars and continuing the process. These differences in velocity and exchanges of material create and maintain the spiral structures of these magnificent galaxies. Sharpless 2-308 - The Dolphin Nebula 😍🔥 - This beautiful Nebula is located approximately 5,200 light years away from Earth, in the constellation of Canis Major. This Nebula is estimated to have a diameter of 60 light years. Arp 273: Battling Galaxies from Hubble Whats happening to these spiral galaxies? Although details remain uncertain, there sure seems to be a titanic battle going on. The upper galaxy is labelled UGC 1810 by itself, but together with its collisional partners is known as Arp 273. The overall shape of the UGC 1810 -- in particular its blue outer ring -- is likely a result of wild and violent gravitational interactions. The blue color of the outer ring at the top is caused by massive stars that are blue hot and have formed only in the past few million years. The inner part of the upper galaxy -- itself an older spiral galaxy -- appears redder and threaded with cool filamentary dust. A few bright stars appear well in the foreground, unrelated to colliding galaxies, while several far-distant galaxies are visible in the background. Arp 273 lies about 300 million light years away toward the constellation of Andromeda. Quite likely, UGC 1810 will devour its galactic sidekicks over the next billion years and settle into a classic spiral form. When a star like the Sun runs out of fuel, it expands and its outer layers puff off, and then the core of the star shrinks. This phase is known as a planetary nebula, and astronomers expect our Sun will experience this in about 5 billion years. This Helix Nebula images contains infrared data from NASAs Spitzer Space Telescope (green and red), optical light from Hubble (orange and blue), ultraviolet from NASAs Galaxy Evolution Explorer (cyan), and Chandras X-rays (appearing as white) showing the white dwarf star that formed in the center of the nebula. NGC 6369: The little Ghost Nebula. Wraithlike NGC 6369 is a faint apparition in night skies popularly known as the Little Ghost Nebula. It was discovered by 18th century astronomer Sir William Herschel as he used a telescope to explore the medicinal constellation Ophiucus. Herschel historically classified the round and planet-shaped nebula as a Planetary Nebula. But planetary nebulae in general are not at all related to planets. Instead they are gaseous shrouds created at the end of a sun-like stars life, the dying stars outer layers expanding into space while its core shrinks to become a white dwarf. The transformed white dwarf star, seen near the center, radiates strongly at ultraviolet wavelengths and powers the expanding nebulas glow. Surprisingly complex details and structures of NGC 6369 are revealed in this tantalizing image composed from Hubble Space Telescope data. The nebulas main round structure is about a light-year across and the glow from ionized oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen atoms are colored blue, green, and red respectively. Over 2,000 light-years away, the Little Ghost Nebula offers a glimpse of the fate of our Sun, which could produce its own planetary nebula about 5 billion years from now. Happy International Space Day🧑🚀 Tag someone that loves space ✨ This is the largest structure ever found in the universe; known as The Boss Great Wall. The Boss Great Wall is a supercluster of galaxies that span over a billion light years across. This makes it the largest structure we’ve ever observed. It’s named after the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey - an international effort to map galaxies and quasars. The wall is made up of 830 separate galaxies that gravity turned into four superclusters; connected by massive filaments of hot gas.
