The beautiful white sand of a tropical sea beach is majorly produced by Parrorfish poop 😀 .... No matter how strange it may sound, it’s actually true. Using their beak-like teeth, Parrotfishes scrape off algae growing on coral reefs, and in turn, they consume parts of the corals. The indigestible coral skeletons made of calcium-carbonate are later excreted as sand. Just one Parrotfish can produce hundreds of kilograms of white sand each year. Presenting the largest fish in our sea, Rhincodon typus or Whale Shark. The latest image from my collaboration with @nathansawaya To see the full image and learn more about some of the worlds most endangered species go to @perniciemcollection 🐋🦈 The Whale Shark can weigh up to 50,000 pounds and grow to be over 30 feet long. It is, however, deceivingly harmless. It survives mainly off of plankton and the occasional small fish. Ironically, they also pose no threats to humans - at times even allowing swimmers to hitch rides on their backs - despite the fatal impact we’ve had on them and their ecosystem. The Whale Shark has been on the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species since 2000, when it was categorized as Vulnerable. It’s classification had not been remediated by the time of its second assessment in 2005 and only continued to worsen. In 2016, the Whale Shark became Endangered and research shows their numbers are still declining. Its population in the Indo-Pacific region has been reduced by 63 percent and approximately 30 percent in the Atlantic. Combining the data of both regions shows that the overall population of the Whale Shark has been cut in half. Although a number of commercial fisheries were forced to close from the 1990s-2000s, the Whale Shark’s byproducts have remained valuable and they continue to be hunted illegally. They are especially vulnerable in parts of Asia, like China, where Whale Shark take has actually increased. It has also become susceptible to not just accidental but also intentional bycatch, as they’ve proved to be indicator species for the presence of other fish. It is also certain that a large number of Whale Sharks have succumbed to their injuries from vessel strikes as shipping lanes continue to be placed closer and closer to their feeding sites. Although we know the number is likely high, because these giant creatures usually sink to the bottom after death, it is near impossible to accurately estimate how many are lost each year. Without a more aggressive approach to the conservation efforts of our ocean and its inhabitants, we will likely have lost another beautiful species, the Whale Shark. - @deanwest on Instagram

💦 BIENVENIDA HERO 9 BLACK 💦 • Esa es la primera foto “oficial” de mi @gopro #hero9black . Había que empezar a lo grande, ¿no? 🤘🏻 🎉Todas las fotos tienen una historia, es lo que me gusta de ellas, recordar qué pasó. En este caso, llevaba meses tras una foto subacuática en alguna cueva. La tenía en mi mente, quería conseguir esa sensación brutal que consigue @victordevalles bajo las aguas cristalinas de Menorca. 💦Cuando recibí la llamada de Gopro, para recibir la Hero 9 en período de prueba, supe que era el momento. Debía darlo todo, demostrar que no se habían equivocado. Planeé una historia, videos y fotos, de las cuales una parte fundamental era bajo el agua. Llamé a Víctor enseguida, compré un vuelo, y me presenté en Menorca a toda prisa. ✈️ Sólo tenia 2 días y medio, estaba nublado, llovía...y Víctor se levantó con una otitis de caballo. Nada de agua. Shit!!! Llamé entonces a @es_fly55 , otro isleño experto...adivináis? Tenía otitis. Me cago en todo. Pensé en @julia_wom ...pues tenía el escafoides roto. Podía ser más gafe? Tenía una misión: encontrar la cueva, a la hora justa de la luz, y sacar esa imagen mágica. El destino empezó a cambiar cuando me dijeron que unos vecinos suyos estaban libres “mañana”. Ellos eran @danflorit y @aina__panda , dos humanos con branquias dispuestos a ayudarme. Encontré la cueva, con mis dos amigas Clara y Agnès, pero no conseguía mantener la cámara quieta. Muy mala mar, viento, nubes...y estrés, mucho estrés. Conseguí meter la cámara al fondo clavada, pero la imagen no me convencía. Por fin, oí una voz, “hola”! Eran Aina y Dan, aun recuerdo su cara al ver que la cámara de mi mano tenía un 9. 🙏🏻😱 Trabajo en equipo, unas pruebas, y Dan colocado para sacar la foto. Nadé hasta dentro, me sumergí, y empecé a tirar arriba lentamente hacia la luz. Siempre hacia la luz. Boom. Fall of a giant - A young humpback washed up in Aptos a couple days ago. It will likely be towed out to sea soon and sunk, where it will nourish benthic communities for months. When youre in the Southern Ocean and the sunsets last for hours.....⠀ ⠀ As we reached the southernmost point of this trip, I experienced some of the most awe-inspiring ocean views of my life. It never truly gets dark below 60 degrees South in the summer. But even knowing that I didn’t expect what turned out to be six hours of sheer beauty.⠀ The sunset began around 9pm and, due to the time of year, proceeded slowly. An hour later, the pink and orange were still glowing so brightly that every surface of the ship reflected the color. Crew and scientists lined the decks to take pictures, which may be beautiful but don’t do justice to the experience. MOTIVATION MONDAY: recognition of California’s magical underwear places, Marine Life Protection Act. In 1999, the California legislature identified the need to re-examine and re-design California’s marine protected area system to increase its coherence and it’s effectiveness of protecting the states marine life, habitats, and ecosystems. Behold a very rare purple Pacific sea nettle or Chrysaora fuscescens! 🙌🏻 They capture prey by paralysis. The tentacles of sea nettles contain stinging cells that are used to paralyze their prey. When the nettle touches its victim, the prey becomes attached to the tentacle, and the jellyfish moves the food into its mouth. A sting from one of these nettles is not enough to kill a human, but they can be quite severe. “As free as the ocean” A little story about me: A couple of years ago I lost my freedom, I was trapped by anxiety and panic attacks and let me tell you, it was a devastating thing in my life because I didnt used to worry about anything and just enjoyed life. I was so mad at myself because I was no longer free. I lost my motivation for surfing, soccer and other activities, but especially my life. However, a few years later I can say that I am free again thanks to Him, because I find my rest in Him and trust Him no matter the circumstances. I will live my life for Him, so why should I worry? I will enjoy life to the fullest, be it small or big moments. I’m so blessed that every day I can open my eyes and breathe again and most of all see the people I love the most. Sometimes the stars and sea align - even in the starless skies of an Antarctic summer. In the following instance, it was a case of land and marine mammals meeting in the middle of that thin interface between the liquid and oxygenated world. The location, Wilhelmina Bay, West Antarctic Peninsula. It was during an unassuming, after-dinner zodiac cruise from the platform of the National Geographic Explorer that some of our skiffs came across a group of feeding humpback whales. After about 20 minutes of impressive lunge feeding behavior the whales seemed to settle into a less focused pattern of feeding and shifted their attention towards us. What ensued was 40 minutes of the most attentive, curious, engaging behavior I’ve ever experienced from a marine mammal while on the ocean. During this period two individuals circled, swam under, spy-hopped next to and nearly (but never actually) rubbed their 40 foot bodies along every inch of our 22 ft. rubber boats. A humpback whale calf playing up at the surface while its mother to moves it along. These whales make a long journey crossing between islands in the south pacific before eventually going to Antarctica. Watching these animals pass less than arms length away, the mother’s eye relaxed and closed is such a humbling experience. Happy #MarineLifeMonday! Lancetfish (Alepisaurus sp. which means “scaleless lizard”) are large, oceanic fish that reach lengths of more than 2 meters. While widely distributed, little is known about their biology. However, they have large mouths with 2-3 fang-like teeth accompanied by many smaller teeth, which would indicate that they are predatory.
