Time for a #PhxArtistSpotlight! Born and based in Phoenix, Ann Morton uses fiber and #textile techniques to examine social norms, interactions, and systems of which we are all a part—as bystanders, participants, victims, and perpetrators. Through sculptural objects and installations, she explores themes of entitlement, homogenization, marginalization, and human obsolescence. In addition to works that reflect her personal handwork, however, @annmortonaz also orchestrates public projects that call for collaboration between herself and community participants. These projects, she says, are meant to harness the power in the act of making and engaging—together. Her 2013 project Ground Cover, for example, was a public art action commissioned by the City of Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture and funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts’ Our Town Grant. The project engaged more than 600 volunteers who made 300 blankets consisting of 28 squares, with each square forming a “pixel” in a giant overall image of desert flowers. The work was installed in a vacant lot in downtown Phoenix, and afterward, the 300 blankets were given to individuals experiencing homelessness through 11 service agencies. In 2019, Morton, who is represented by Lisa Sette Gallery, was named the 2019 Arlene and Morton Scult Artist Award recipient by #PhxArt Museum. As part of the award, Morton’s work, including her next #publicart action- @thevioletprotest - will be featured in a solo exhibition at the Museum in 2021. 6 Suspected Fentanyl Overdoses in Pasadena in Single Day Leave 2 Dead, 1 in Grave Condition At least 2 survivors revived with naloxone anti-overdose spray . . . Two men died, another was hospitalized in grave condition and three others were recovering after six separate incidents of suspected fentanyl overdoses in Pasadena on Friday, authorities said. The overdoses took place at six different locations throughout the course of the day, Pasadena police Lt. William Grisafe said. All six victims, all men who ranged in age from their 30s to their 50s, were taken to hospitals, he said. Two of them died a short time later, he said. A third was listed in grave condition and not expected to survive, according to Grisafe. The other three patients were doing well and expected to be released from hospital care soon, he said. What did I do before I could mend? It’s hard to believe that I used to consider a garment that had a hole in it cashed. Of all the materials out there, fabric is one of the more “mendable” (I hate when something with brittle plastic parts snaps in two... I feel helpless). The other day when I pulled all the fall sweaters out of storage I discovered holes from last year that seemed to have gaped and widened during their time laying wait in the closet. The weather change always re-inspires me to gather up my mending supplies and cozy up with a blanket, tea, and my family’s giant pile of garments in need of mending. One by one I chip away at them, trying to slow my anxious, racing mind, if for just a few minutes. I darned this merino wool shirt with thin wool yarn. Swipe to see process pictures.
