Throwback to a reflection I wrote in third year of medical school, still resonates with me today. --- 01/14/2020 To heal, one needs to be vulnerable and this is definitely not easy. Especially in front of someone you’ve just met. I’m privileged to be that someone. That one person you can share your deepest and darkest struggles with both physically and emotionally. My first two weeks as a clinic intern has been nothing short of remarkable. Being a source of trust and comfort for someone at their lowest is extremely humbling. This is a responsibility I don’t take lightly. We often forget that the word doctor comes from the Latin word “teacher” or “to teach”. But let’s not forget that the teacher can also be taught by their students. The patients I’ve seen in the last two weeks have taught me the importance and beauty of vulnerability which can turn into a journey of healing with the right support. I am so thankful for these humanly, raw, and grounding interactions. Yesterday we had the honor of talking with Kristy Lee, the owner of the Children’s Social Club (@thechildrenssocialclub), located over in RVC. This mom of two was inspired by her girls, Kensly and Kaylee, to build a safe play space for all parents to enjoy and their children to flourish. With her magnetic personality, unbridled positivity and keen attention to detail, its no wonder her business has earned 5 stars all across the board on Yelp:⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ I own a childrens modern indoor play space in Rockville Centre, NY. Besides the usual play gym toys and equipment, I have a small cafe for coffee and packaged snacks, a small movie theatre area, an instagram-able lounge area, and an art and reading nook. I started thinking about this business right after I had my first daughter as there were not any play spaces close by. It took 2 years to plan, design and finally open up the perfect play space for me, my kids, and the community around us, who so desperately needed one. I opened in January of 2020.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Community and supporting locals has always been in my blood. Both of my parents owned a Chinese take-out restaurant nearby and watching them work hard gave me my work ethic. Also, watching the community stand by and support them gave me the LOVE to keep supporting businesses and everyone around me. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ One way I have had to adapt these last several months was to start a reservation system instead of my walk in and play any time, any day policy. It was hard to change because I know as a mom, our schedules are always up in the air, dictated by our little kings and queens so we never really know what time works for us. Luckily, the community of socialites at The Social Club have really rallied behind me with these changes. Although Covid has hurt a lot of people, I think most of us have learned how strong we can be, that we can adapt, we are fighters, and that there is nothing that can stop us from doing what we love. AND WE WILL KEEP PUSHING FORWARD. I envision my business growing, thriving and being resilient through this. This project started after I tried one that was the equivalent of sticking a wand into a paint can and applying it under my eyes. I screamed. It was so thick, yet was made splotchy after I used a makeup sponge. THEN THIS CONCEALER HAD THE AUDACITY TO NOT COME OFF. Whew. Now that it’s out there, I can move on. AND WHY???⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⚠️ TW: MENTION OF RECOVERY FROM SEXUAL ASSAULT⚠️⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ 💕 It’s no secret that I’ve spent some time off of social media recently. I won’t get into specifics but I’ve been facing a lot of health issues and coping with recent trauma. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ 💕 I won’t lie, there have been several moments in the last few months where I questioned my ability to continue in the sex ed space as it can be triggering to my trauma at times.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ 💕 As mentioned in my @input mag interview (link in bio), I’ve gone through periods of HATING sex due to my experiences with it before. I remember thinking, “am I even normal? Am I permanently broken? Will I ever enjoy sex?” Which are all valid questions to have in a world saturated in the idea that if you aren’t drawn to sex, then something is wrong with you. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ 💕 I grew tired of being deprived of the pleasures in human connection due to past trauma and lack of a positive sexual experience. And while I can’t erase my trauma, I can let it challenge me to not be held captive by it. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ 💕 @nomitang sent me a g-spot toy to try a while ago and to be fair, it terrified the HELL out of me for two reasons. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ 1. G-spot stimulation isn’t my go-to form of pleasure so I was skeptical.⁣⁣⁣⁣ 2. Penetrative sex is typically not my preference 🤷🏽‍♀️⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ 💕 But, one day I decided to be bold and give it a try. Was it bliss the second it touched my skin? No. Did I let it completely penetrate me? No. But did I take a step that day and everyday since then to step into my pleasure? Yes. Was it worth it? Fuck yes. And, most importantly, has this toy been able to help me face my trauma with penetrative sex on my own timing with ME in control? Fuck yes. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 💕THAT is something I can stand behind.
