We want to start by thanking all of you for the overwhelming support we have received since reopening, we wouldnt still be here without all of you! As many of you are aware, we are operating with reduced hours and staff. Our regulars and locals have been extremely appreciative, supportive and generous with their tips, however many of the tourists have not. The problem is getting worse, not better. Last night, as our servers ran food out to customers in the pouring rain they made less than $70 each. We do pay them more than a normal server hourly wage, however the bulk of their income does still come from tips which they use to pay rent and utilities, pay for college and health insurance and buy food for their families. If they do not make enough tips, we are supplementing their pay to make up for it as we could not run our business without them. These servers that are working now, for us and for other businesses, chose to come off unemployment and return to work, thereby forfeiting the extra $600 a week from unemployment. I dont believe they should be penalized for that. For those of you that do tip on your takeout orders, thank you! For those of you that dont Im hoping that reading this might give you some food for thought. Restaurants are operating through the largest crisis to hit our industry in history, fighting to keep their doors open. It seems in the early months of this pandemic everyone appreciated that fact, however now it seems that like with many other important issues we are quick to forget. It is estimated at least 600,000 post-9/11 veterans are part of the population living with PTSD. “The challenges stemming from PTSD are not only experienced by the warrior,” said Lt. Col. (Ret.) Michael Richardson, WWP vice president of independence services and mental health. “When a wounded warrior is coping with PTSD, the ones who love them sometimes struggle the most.” Families of veterans managing PTSD experience secondary trauma symptoms — or indirect trauma — very similar to what warriors face: anxiety, depression, irritation, social isolation, and more. According to WWP’s mental health team, sometimes the symptoms warriors display in dealing with PTSD become so pronounced that they tax the family and create added dysfunction. For instance, injured veterans may lose interest in family activities, leaving family members feeling abandoned. In addition, the risk of physical and emotional violence is higher in families where one of its members has PTSD. So, family members may feel extra stressed trying to meet the veteran’s needs while not having their own needs met. This can cycle into the family’s sense of helplessness and depression. WWP believes that increased awareness can bring more attention to not only warriors coping with PTSD but also those families who are facing secondary trauma. With education, treatment becomes an option. WWP directs every hour, dollar, and action to helping warriors achieve their highest ambition. Today is my dia-versery! If you’ve known me since 2007, I apologize because these posts are probably getting old. Just imagine if you actually HAD diabetes since 2007! :’) in the first photo I was undiagnosed and getting sicker by the day. Thankfully I didn’t go into diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) before I got to the hospital. . . I’ve never posted the second picture before, because I am unrecognizable. I am 80 lbs, 5’7” and SICK as hell. I looked like shit and I felt like shit but this picture makes me laugh because my mom and I joked around and said, “is this how diabetics have to eat?”. Whenever I tell the story of my diagnosis I always talk about how I was so afraid I’d have to start eating salad. If you’ve known me for awhile you also know I forking hate salad, lettuce, anything leafy and green. Over the years I’ve answered with a lot of “YES, I can eat that” and learned a lot about how to take care of myself. It’s never been easy. But it’s getting better with technology and experience. . . This year is 13 years living life as a type one diabetic. Now I’ve officially lived most of my life as a type one! I’ve lived with this disease long enough to even experience the actual medical name shifting from juvenile diabetes to plain old type one diabetes. I’ve done multiple daily injections, 2 different insulin pumps, and now with a continuous glucose monitor (thank gawd). . . I think this year my message is going to be that A.) insulin is too forking expensive. This needs to change before more people die. And B.) please be aware of the symptoms for your sake and your loved ones. If you are extremely thirsty, dehydrated, and peeing CONSTANTLY you need to call your doctor. And I’m not talking like “wow I was out in the sun all day” thirsty, this is some next level shit. There are other symptoms as well like muscle cramps, fruity breath, blurred vision, and fatigue.
