Tive crises de ansiedade na primeira vez em que saí do país, e mesmo no dia a dia sempre evitava o desconhecido. Até que resolvi não viver mais assim e busquei as viagens como forma de aprendizado pra lidar com situações fora da zona de conforto. Funcionou até demais! :) Acabei ficando viciada em ir além do que é familiar pra mim.⠀ Comecei a viajar sozinha em 2009, geralmente com a “desculpa” de ir estudar no exterior. Em 2012, quando me preparava pra passar mais uma temporada fora, criei o blog Janelas Abertas, que acabou virando meu trabalho. Pedi demissão de um emprego que adorava, mas não me permitia viajar tanto quanto gostaria nem me dedicar aos meus propósitos. ⠀ E aí entrei num ritmo mais intenso de viagens, no esquema de mochilão, pelo Brasil e pelo mundo. E amei as experiências que vivi! Mas passava pouco tempo nos destinos e comecei a sentir falta de uma imersão mais profunda na realidade de cada lugar. Do you ever remember a place that made you feel so good? What do you do when you remember it? Do you savor the moment and engage all your senses? Really feel the joy in the memory? Does it have texture? Color? Your brain doesn’t know the difference between past, present, and future so when you remember that memory, it’s like you’re actually living it again. We can retrain our neural pathways to stop firing at the over stimulation to potential threats and retrain it to relax. Part of my recent limbic training program has required me to write down positive memories prior to a trauma, and future positive goals, as if they’re happening right now. Present. Tense. Remember, your brain doesn’t know it’s in the past! It’s been helpful in organizing my thoughts/feelings, assists in manifesting how I want my future to be, and anchors me positively in the present moment. I really want to clarify this program is for more than chronic health issues and brain injuries. Because it’s based on neuroplasticity of the brain, it can cover a wide amount of conditions, including stress management. Neuroplasticity allows the neurons in the brain to compensate for injury and disease and adjust their activities in response to new situations or to changes in their environment. For example, I am starting to remember more of my good past experiences because I’m actively engaging that in my brain, and releasing the trauma that was triggering so many systemic health problems. The stress response no longer has to fire so intensely because my brain understands that it’s a limbic system impairment from a brain injury and other environmental exposures. hi there Instagram, I have a heavy heart writing this but I need to share this with y’all. It saddens me to say that I’m taking a step back from hairstyling. I will still work on Saturdays (don’t worry brides, still giving your wedding 120%) but I will no longer accept new clients or work during the weekday. Some unfortunate events took place in my life recently, therefore I had to make this decision. I felt as if God was pulling me in another direction in life & with that being said, I am now working at Advanced Orthopedic Specialties. I am very excited where this new journey is taking me. Like many of you, I’ve been reading the news about the Ellen Show and I have to say I am not shocked. In 2007 I was in a long term and loving relationship with an amazing woman and we planned an exciting trip to LA with our friends to go to her show. We were big fans and we were so thrilled to be a part of the studio audience. For anyone new to this space, I am Queer and came out at the age of 15 on National Coming Out Day in front of my high school at a school assembly. While I very, very much have privilege from being in a heteronormative relationship with my life partner today, I have never stopped identifying as a Queer person. When we arrived at the studio there was a lot of long waiting in line and then there wasn’t. The line started moving and when we got into the studio to be seated we were immediately and suddenly separated. My friend and I who are more gender conforming and femme presenting were whisked away to the front section. Our partners at that time-- my ex who is gender non-conforming and our other friend who is Trans, were seated in the back. We were shocked and asked to be seated together, but were told to move and sit down stat. While we managed to have a lot of fun and I got to dance near Ellen, it left a terrible taste in all of our mouths. While I didn’t experience being seated in the back for my gender expression or gender identity, I witnessed how painful it was for my ex and our friend at that time. We ended up writing to the show about the discrimination my ex-partner and our friend experienced and the response was disappointing to put it mildly. From that day on I stopped being a fan of Ellen and of her show. So… all this news about the behind the scenes at the Ellen Show, while incredibly upsetting and awful, is unfortunately not a huge surprise to me after what we experienced. That moment was such a life lesson on my privilege related to gender expression and the importance of speaking out-- even if the response was not a just one, it was important to write to the show. Meet Helen Popinchalk, a LUCAD screenprinting professor and the faculty highlight of the month! Helen completed her undergrad at Simmons in Studio Art and Administration, and her graduate at UMass Dartmouth. She is the cofounder of Trifecta Editions, which works with local artists like Greg Lamarsh and Farel Dalrymple. She also created a show called Go to the Light, featuring a collection of artists whose prints are focused on neon and fluorescent inks lit by black-lights (this will be shown at the Montserrat College of Art in Beverly on October 29, check it out!). According to Helen, its common for people not to realize the work that goes into getting an image onto the paper with screen printing. It is very process oriented, and the finished product doesnt always express that in the same way a painting might. New to Lesley, Helen says her favorite thing about working here is hands down the students, and their genuine enthusiasm for their artwork and for learning the processes. It’s apparently ‘National Sons Day’ and how do I have a four month old, who’s getting SO friggen BIG! My heart burst with love and joy when I look at this kid. I’ve lost count how many times a day, I catch myself saying “he’s so friggen cute!,” and I never get to snap any “picture perfect milestone photos” because I’m always too busy being present with him, that I don’t even care to take snapshots. Every milestone picture happens a week late, or sometimes not at all (whoooops we missed 3 months), but I’m not complaining because in this busy life and hectic world, to be present and completely at peace, is a true gift. I kind of almost nearly had a food reaction because this restaurant wasnt sure if they added milk to the eggs! Im lactose intolerant if you didnt know and I am very careful with what I eat. We went out to a lovely place and after a mix up with my hot chocolate, three different staff werent sure if milk was in my eggs. My friend spoke on my behalf because my reduced complaining lifestyle had kicked in and I was not about to drag anyone. Thankfully, 20 minutes later they had figured it out, took it off my bill and tried to appease me. We were eating out to help out and supporting a new restaurant in the city centre. (Eat out to help out was a UK government scheme to get us outside after bars and restaurants re-opened from a 5 month lockdown. Good old Boris paid up to £10pp off the bill from Mon to Wed of August at participating restaurants when you are in. Courteous lad I guess🤷🏾♀️) After the reductions, my friends paid like £5 each for their massive plates, I was content with the food and sadly looked at the cold seasoned up egg that sat there (which ended up not having milk in). I also like this group of women, you need groups of women for different reasons. These are my Psych friends that I work and down bday drinks with: we chill, dance, vibes and eat together. We are Rachel & Camille- friends going on 16 years, creatives, and first time mamas who just so happened to, by the Grace of God, have had our babies 2 months apart from each other! Rachel’s name means “Little Lamb” and Camille’s maiden name is Coast, thus Petit Coast was born! We started this little business venture a few months after the craziness of Covid-19 hit. We knew we needed to get our creative juices out, so we started crafting and making clay earrings just for fun! Low and behold, we became addicted to the process and being able to spend time with each other after months of only seeing each other through a window! So Ive been thinking a lot about people in our community who are not wearing masks, throwing or attending underground parties, foregoing safety guidelines - or maybe just lacking the words to ask for more safety & compliance from friends. ⠀ Like you, I want to scream at the top of my lungs when Im confronted by this flagrant disregard for community heath - whether that be screaming directly at these people or into the abyss, I dont know. ⠀ I *DO* know that screaming, shaming, guilting, and dragging does not HISTORICALLY work when it comes to public health and compliance. Many of you know I worked in the health sector as a scientist before I switched to nightlife. Specifically, I completely 8 years of research on drug addiction. I also spent several summers volunteering at syringe-exchange programs for users of injectable recreational drugs. ⠀ Heres what I learned: when it comes to high risk behaviors, the best model we have for getting people to embrace safer practices is Harm Reduction. This is a practice of meeting people where theyre at, and using positive incentives to encourage safer behavior instead of punitive & negative reactions to discourage bad behavior. ⠀ We desperately need a badass public health campaign that gets people EXCITED about wearing masks and makes social distancing cool. In the absence of that (and I seriously lack faith that it will ever come), Ive decided to make my own campaign..... ⠀ #ThisIsNotADanceParty ! ⠀ The idea is to lean in to the awkwardness of pandemic nightlife with a bit of humor. The idea is to flood social media with more images & videos that model good behavior and responsible socializing. Lets show the world that we can hang out in ways that are NOT dance parties, but are still totally fun, uplifting, and full of connection. Its hard not to feel nostalgic around this time of year. Normally we would be going to the fair, and it would be my kick-off to the end of the year: State Fair, Balloon Fiesta, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and bam the New Year. . 2020 has not been what any of us could have predicted. And the uncertainty of the future seems just as unpredictable as it did back in March. There wont be a state fair or the balloon fiesta, and big holiday gatherings might be via zoom, but what I do know is that the more I can sink into my heart and lead from a place of love, the happier I am. It may not be that overly bubbly happy but more of that deep contentment that comes with being in line with my values and doing the right thing. Choosing to take care of myself, those entrusted in my care, and tending to of my corner of the world to the best of my abilities. Whenever life seems too big and tumultuous to handle, these principles always bring me back down to earth, taking it one day at a time. I didn’t know I could feel so much love for a pair of pajamas but here we are. 🤷🏻♀️💖💖💖 I bought these @honeydewintimates All American pjs in black from @nordstrom before going into labor in December because the internet commanded me to get a pair of comfy pjs (in a dark color!) for post labor... I changed into them after delivering and prettttty much haven’t changed out of them since 🤩 they are SO soft (“like BUTTER” as the fashion bloggers say) In the early days I pretty much only took them off to wash them. Then I wore them to work from home, (totally looks like a normal shirt on zoom calls), I’ve worn them to walk down the street to get coffee, and I’ve worn them so much that they got a hole in the legs - and while it’s not stopping me from wearing them, I figured I should order a second pair. 👍🏻 They were out of the black so I ordered the gray and pink stripes. I worried I wouldn’t love them as much as my OG black ones. Wrong. Love. THEN, the Nordstrom anniversary sale came and I’m happy to report dreams do come true because they had them! For $29.90! In this fun purple leopard no less! Dare I say this is the best money I’ve spent since December? Yes. But I also feel like I would feel this way even if it wasn’t a pandemic? 🙌🏻 Anyway, if I can help you and your happiness in any small way, I feel very confident that it’s through these pjs. 💯💯💯 And as for Jake’s? soooooo life is messy and hard unlike this photo. a little over i week ago i decided to move to texas with my mom ( never ever ever did i think i would come out here i’m a california girl at heart) but i was feeling stuck and in a deep deep rut. i was a little too comfortable with where i was and what i was doing and i’ve always said the last thing i want is to be comfortable. so i went wayyyyy out of my comfort zone and moved 1,200 miles away from my childhood (a little dramatic huh?!?) “I think a lot of people can relate to scan anxiety and the fear of the future, the fear of leaving your loved ones behind,” says Alexa DiVener. She was first diagnosed with lung cancer at age 17. Now, at age 25, she is finding hope in a clinical trial target therapy drug called selpercatinib after recurrences and several different treatments. The tumor in Alexa’s breast began to shrink within a month of beginning the drug. She was also nearly symptom-free. Her hair grew back, her skin cleared, her nausea and vomiting ceased, and her cancer began to decrease more with each new scan. “Finding drugs that work is just beautiful,” says Alexa. “It is beautiful that scientists at MD Anderson have the technology and the resources that can make possible what was impossible before.” Alexa has finished school and now works as a mental health nurse in Illinois. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, she’s continued participating in the clinical trial remotely. She has monthly virtual visits with Dr. Vivek Subbiah, and her medication is delivered to her door. “MD Anderson has saved my life over and over these last nine years,” says Alexa. “The doctors and nurses at MD Anderson are the reason why I wanted to become a nurse: to help people through the hardest times.
