How to be doing everything - working, side hustles, family, friends, etc. but still be fully present. It’s hard because we’re usually thinking of the next place we have to be, the next person we have to talk to, the next task we have to complete on our to do list. I used to have this problem more when I was younger, in medical school, residency, and fellowship. It always seemed like so much was going on, I didn’t want to miss out. I had my schedule packed with back to back activities, work, studying, socializing, and so on. The problem is we can be doing a lot of things and always be busy without really ever being present. What I found helped me was meditation, journaling, and most recently I started blocking my days last month to focus on only one main goal per day. The other day Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez opened up her Instagram story to answer peoples questions, and this one felt profound: Q: What does an America with defunded police look like to you? Her answer: The good news is that it actually doesnt take a ton of imagination. It looks like a suburb. Affluent white communities already live in a world where they choose to fund youth, health, housing, etc. more than they fund police. These communities have lower crime rates not because they have more police, but because they have more resources to support healthy society in a way that reduces crime. When a teenager or preteen does something harmful in a suburb (I say teen because this is often where lifelong carceral cycles begin for Black and Brown communities), White communities bend over backwards to find alternatives to incarceration for their loved ones to protect their future, like community service or rehab or restorative measures. Why dont we treat Black and Brown people the same way? Why doesnt the criminal system care about Black teens futures? Why doesnt the news use Black peoples graduation or family photos in stories the way they do when they cover White people (eg. Brock Turner) who commit harmful crimes? Affluent White suburbs also design their own lives so that they walk through the world without having much interruption or interaction with police at all, aside from community events and speeding tickets (and many of these communities try to reduce those, too!) Where do I even begin… it’s my mom’s birthday today 🎂🎉🤍!!! She shares a birthday with Annie and @shaymerritt ... talk about a powerhouse lineup of incredible women! My mom is really something special. I was having coffee with my dad the other day and he was telling me about how fortunate he was to have my mom at his side through life, especially with his diagnosis. I thought about it, and looked up at him and asked him “what do you love most about her? “ He looked up at me with big tears in his eyes said “her heart “. Then I started crying. Ahh, it’s so true. My mom does have the biggest heart. She is the person that puts everyone else before herself, and wouldn’t think to complain about it, not even for a second. She so willingly shares her love in such a gracious open way with no strings attached… It’s the kind of love that the world needs more of. She is the grandma with the best hugs, the stranger on the street with the biggest smiles, the life of the party, the friend you always hoped you would have and has more talent in her pinkie than 12 people combined (she’s an artist) but is so modest. Happy birthday sweet mama. I have no idea how I lucked out landing you as my mom but am I ever grateful I did. JUST LIKE MOMMA MAKES: HOMEMADE MATZO BALL SOUP⠀ ⠀ Growing up in a Jewish household, Fall holidays werent just about Halloween and Thanksgiving. As much as I looked forward to trick or treating and stuffing my face with turkey, I couldnt wait to gather around with my family to celebrate Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish new year) and Yom Kippur (a day of atonement)⠀ ⠀ Not only was I able to see my extended family more often because of these holidays, but I was able to spend extra time cooking with my mom in the kitchen, helping her prepare for the big Jewish feasts. I cherish those memories with her and love to keep the tradition for as long as possible.⠀ ⠀ My all time favorite recipe? Her homemade matzo ball soup. Think: chicken soup with a soft pillowy dumpling. Each year she makes it in a huge soup pot and we freeze the leftovers to enjoy throughout the next few months. ⠀ ⠀ Though the Jewish holidays are looking a bit different this year, a real bummer! I am grateful for my health, my familys health, and the extra time I get to spend with my parents.⠀ ⠀ This year, I challenge you not to take things for granted and to show gratitude to those that hold meaning in your life. Kondisi ekonomi, pendidikan, pembangunan akan semakin terpuruk, orang-orang yang sakit dan gugur akan semakin banyak, dan bukan ga mungkin bahwa kita dan orang-orang yang paling kita sayangi bisa jadi salah satunya. Sudah terlalu banyak yang menderita. Coba lihat sekeliling, dengar cerita mereka yang sakit dan kehilangan, mereka pun ga menyangka musibah ini akan menimpa mereka. Jadi jangan lengah, this can literally happen to ANYONE. Jadi, yuk kita perketat 3M (memakai masker, menjaga jarak, mencuci tangan) sambil tetap #dirumahaja at all possible times. Pokoknya, anggap aja semua orang yang kita temui, termasuk diri kita sendiri adalah OTG. Dan jaga daya tahan tubuh! Karena sistem imun kita adalah benteng pertahanan utama kita, so make sure it is strong and secure. Pastikan asupan vitamin dan nutrisi kita baik, olahraga di lingkungan tempat tinggal saja, istirahat yang cukup dan berkualitas, minum air yang banyak, get some sunlight too. And please do what you can to stay sane and happy during these times. Read books, watch videos, join webimars. develop new hobbies, try new home workouts, do meditation, call and check on your loved ones, scroll through memes, whatever you need to stay zen so we get out of this pandemic in a good state. Yuk bersama-sama jadikan ini PSBB terakhir kita. Buat yang daerahnya ga menjalani PSBB, tetap jalani protokol kesehatan seketat mungkin. Tahan dan sabar sebentar lagi aja.. 👰 My little sister got married!! We had a tiny ceremony in Cape Cod on the waterfront. I was honored to be the officiant, my husband played 🎻, and the boys were the 💍&🌷 boys. I managed to hold off on crying until the toasts during our homemade clambake 🦞. When Erin, the lovely editor at @asac.albertas Birth Issues Magazine, put out a call for submissions for their Birth during a Pandemic special issue, I thought it might be a good moment to share my experience. 🌈 TW: infertility, pregnancy loss. For the first time, I wrote about my journey to motherhood, from a difficult diagnosis to my first miracle baby (Felix!), a traumatic loss, my experience with anxiety and panic attacks following this sequence of events, then finally having our rainbow baby (Beatrix!) arrive during the earliest days of the pandemic. 💗 I shared our story as a way of documenting my experience during this unique and challenging moment in time, but more so as a way of trying to help others feel less isolated in their struggles on the road to parenthood. None of this was easy to write about, let alone to go through. It feels incredibly vulnerable to do so but feeling alone when youre in the midst of a fertility struggle or grieving process is far worse. Morning flow on Squirrel Hill with my Mom and thanks to @amazingyoga and @seanconley2. Sam Laffey I am enthusiastic about helping artists and creative business owners find success. I’ve found that writing artist statements, bios, grant proposals, and more can be unreasonably challenging to those that put all their energy into creative work. Plus, designing business cards or other print pieces can be overwhelming when graphics and layout are not their chosen medium. We can’t all be great at everything, right? I graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a BFA in Fine Art, with a double concentration in Painting and Sculpture, and a BA in Psychology in 2006. I earned my Masters of Arts Management from the Heinz College in 2007. I then served for ten years as the Design & New Media Manager at Pittsburgh Glass Center, an organization dedicated to supporting glass artists. On September 3 we said goodbye to #NannuAlfred, my grandfather and the centre of our family. He and my grandmother, Nanna Maria, emigrated to Canada from Malta on December 24, 1981. Nannu was always there for us, flying to Toronto from Vancouver every Christmas making sure all of us could be together. Everyone slept at my dads house. It was an absolute zoo. And I loved it. We played cards, ping pong and foosball. We ate, we drank. He was a cerebral man and loved talking about the global politics of his time. As Nannu got older, he longed to live in Malta again. And I had the privilege of living with him every winter while I attended school at the University of Malta. He was the centre of my world at that time and I cherish those years. I literally cannot believe how much ‘in fighting’ there seems to be in the human race right now. I mean you don’t have to look far do you? A recent photo of me from my session with @capturedbykirsten and what can I say she nailed it! If I could have someone just follow me around and take photos she would be it! I love to start my day off moving, whether that is a workout or a stretch video I thrive on this! I feel so energized, motivated and ready for the day when I start this way. This wasn’t always my process but I have become accustom to it and without it, it really throws of my day. Karate or Martial Arts depending on who you talk to, is an obsession I have had since I was a child.🥋 It’s disciplined yet relaxed with a serious side of fitness. What activities do you turn to when you’re feeling stressed? ⠀ ⠀ For me, I have my daily mediation practice, virtual yoga, breathe work, journaling and I offer Reiki to myself as well as my boys (and my client’s dogs). It helps to be equipped with tools. ⠀ ⠀ Learning to recognize what stress, anxiety, worry, disappointment and all the fun stuff ‘feels’ like in your body, whether it be tension in your shoulders, knots in your stomach, tightness in your chest, a racing mind or endless chatter is key. ⠀ ⠀ Awareness allows for possibilities. ⠀ ⠀ It’s the first step to letting go and releasing the things that no longer serve you and allows for transformation. ✨⠀ ⠀ And self-care doesn’t have to be time consuming. A quick 10 minute stroll with your dog or connecting with a friend in-person or virtually can do wonders. ⠀ ⠀ So how have you been feeling? Em 2016 participei da Conferência da Cidade em Humaitá/AM, e no calor das discussões, uma pessoa incomodada com as minhas colocações, tomou a fala e se dirigiu até mim e perguntou o que você é?. Eu dei uma resposta para o momento, mas a pergunta continuou reverberando! Até que eu resolvi fazer uma viagem para o meu profundo e escondido. Também me debrucei sobre um vasto material, e aos poucos fui respondendo a pergunta! Foi um processo lindo, porque a medida em que fazia descobertas eu também fui o laboratório. O desvendar da alma, por exemplo, me trouxe a definição de que seus componentes (pensamentos, sentimentos e emoções) precisam ser trabalhados constantemente para não causarem danos ao corpo e nem ao espírito. Aí mora o perigo! Sou muito grata à Deus pela maravilhosa tutoria nesse processo, ninguém melhor do que o Espírito Santo para nos capacitar! O mapa dos caminhos nessa jornada me levou a muitas fontes de conhecimentos, e cada uma delas estará sempre presente na continuidade da minha busca por equilíbrio. 🌱 Member Feature 🌱 Jackie 🌱 When Covid hit and everything went into lockdown, I was thrilled that Revive reacted so quickly and started up their online fitness classes. At first, I was excited, but as the days went on, I found it harder to get motivated to attend the number of classes that I should, and when I did, I certainly did not push myself alone in the basement. Being back in the studio and having to commit to a routine has been wonderful. I usually set my intentions a week or two in advance then no matter what life brings, I am committed to my workout. The classes each morning start my day off on the right track and I find I am far more motivated to push myself harder with the encouragement of the coaches and the energy of the other members. Estas palabras que hoy tacho, borro... estas con las que me atraganto, eran las que tan piadosamente temía en aquel verano de 2007, cuando dormías arrebujada en el pecho de tu padre. Por 13 años 3 meses y 25 días nos aseguramos de darte una buena vida y no sé de dónde cojones sacamos las fuerzas para darte una buena muerte. Este 12 de agosto a las 21:02 te acompañamos en tu último viaje. Unas manos firmes y cálidas te ayudaron a cruzar de orilla, a abandonar esa carga en la que se había convertido -de un día para otro- tu cuerpo. Por muchos años fuimos el triángulo Alex-Erika-Lola.
