The past few months have been a whirlwind in many ways, but they have given me the space to reflect and dig deeper into what I’m passionate about. At the beginning of March, my desire to create was at an all-time low, and picking up my camera for a job took everything out of me. My heart for photography felt distant, and I realized that I had become so swept up in the hustle of running a business that I lost sight of who I am as an artist. The slow pace of quarantine led to a break from photography altogether, and I was able to invest more time into discovering what I’m truly passionate about. All that to say, moving forward, I have decided to take a step back from traditional wedding photography. Neeko Everest Posey 💙 Still in awe that he’s here already. At 33 weeks and 6 days pregnant my water broke around 2am on Good Friday, and Neeko arrived at 3:32am on Easter Sunday. He weighed 4lbs 4.4oz and was 17.25 inches long. He’s since gained almost two pounds and grown over two inches. Yesterday would have been 37 weeks gestation. We weren’t even supposed to meet him until a few weeks from now, but we’ve had the pleasure of getting to know him for the last four weeks. The first three weeks in the NICU were almost indescribable so I’ll leave it at: I’m so glad he’s finally home. The biggest design challenge with this install was the heritage ceiling! 🤔 We couldn’t fix into the ceiling, we couldn’t hang anything because of the sheer weight an install has & the consequences it could have on the heritage foundations... so we really had to challenge ourselves to think outside the box, but we had to meet a brief! 👊🏻 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ That’s when we thought of paper as a light weight material & then one morning at 2am I thought of magnets as the fixing mechanism! Katie found a Perth supplier with rare earth heavy duty magnets and we got testing. The pressed metal ceiling @theflourfactory is ridgy-didge heritage, it has ferrite in it which meant the magnets stuck! If it was today’s pressed metal ceiling magnets would not have worked. 😝 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So long story short we then got designing & creating!🥳 and this is the results! Thank you to everyone to who has visited and supported Miishkooki these past two years. Unfortunately, I have made the tough decision to close the gallery. I didn’t get the property tax exemption I was hoping for. As a non-profit, the steep yearly tax bill of $23,000 was just too much. Looking back, it was a fantastic experience and I have no regrets. I want to thank everyone who helped with building the space, curating shows, Lauren Asta for her beautiful mural (which was the first mural out of ten in Skokie), and my wife Drew who supported me throughout this adventure. I’ve made many lifelong friends and connections and hope to have made a positive impact on the community. Miishkooki may continue through pop-up shows in the future around Skokie. Hi all, This is Gaston, founder of Bonsai. I’ve spent a lot of time writing and re-writing this post in an effort to come up with the best way of sending the right message here. I think ultimately, just saying how I feel and what is happening is adequate. . . Due to this situation, it’s not feasible for us to continue operating. I’ve tried to look at every angle possible, looking for all ways that would allow us to do our favorite thing in the world- welcoming you into our home and serving you. Unfortunately, it’s not in the cards. . . The reality for restaurants everywhere is harsh. We rely on people coming in every day. Regulars, tourists, lunch meetings, quick coffee runs, serendipitous encounters, word of mouth visits, and so many more ways people visit us allows us to stay open. All those smiles and visits halted suddenly, and for good reason, when the health of people became jeopardized. What I thought was a short time frame until things got back to normal now seems to be a least a year. . . Every restaurant has a different situation. Unfortunately, ours doesn’t allow us to keep fighting. Despite grants, loan programs, and different revenue streams, the math doesn’t add up. We have to close. . . I’ve know this fate for some days now and have held out writing and sharing this with you all. By far the most painful part of closing Bonsai is knowing that I’ll be taking a special place away from a lot of people. Knowing how special Bonsai was for people was the biggest motivation I had for everything I did. New flavors, decorative changes, employee hiring decisions, and almost everything we decided to do ultimately hinged on wether I thought it would make people feel more welcome. Without all of you, there would be no us. I’ve always thought that restaurants are like theater plays. We show up everyday to perform and delight. Without you as an audience, our performances would be for nothing. What makes us fulfilled and happy, is knowing that we might have made your day just a tiny bit bet better when you stopped by. . . I am also healing well after a painful but very quick labor process (I dilated from a 3 to an 8 in less than an hour). I can’t think of a harder time to open a business. A dear customer and friend of mine, Sandra Santane, had been diligently working hard on this incredible space long, long before anyone had even heard of the word Covid. Despite the ill timing, @cuppatahoe, a gorgeous bookstore/coffee shop/casual co-working space, has now opened and was already fortuitously set up to accommodate social distancing. Wednesday after picking my daughter up from daycare, we picked up a pizza and salads from our favorite local pizza place @thehallspizza. Delicious as always. It is a pretty typical errand for us, and fairly uneventful aside from one driver - unfortunately also pretty typical. Our route naturally takes us by Classen and 16th, and I humbly notice Chad Epleys ghost bike every time. Chad was killed biking home from work a year and a half ago, in a hit and run. He was 31 at the time. The driver murderer has not been found. Ive been running Cycliq front and rear cameras on my bike ever since, hoping my family will never need to rely on such footage. (I am, however, amassing footage of drivers running red lights, cutting me off, or speeding around me without changing lanes only to stop at a stoplight, then sit for another 10 seconds after it turns green - perhaps texting. All recorded at 1080p at 60fps - license plates show up well.) Most drivers are courteous, patient, and even jealous of the amount of fresh air my daughter gets. (My cameras also record the smiles, waves, and thumbs up.) But I never forget that it only takes one driver... This morning I learned of a 20 year old biking home from working at his church, was hit and killed by drivers of 2 different cars. Both drove off. One eventually returned, but the other murderer is still out there. It could have been us. Making it worse is the amount of likes that a shortsighted and callous response has gotten, wondering why anyone would be stupid enough to bike in the rain. It is difficult knowing that people with these opinions drive the same roads I bike on. I dont believe they want to murder. But maybe they want to glance at their phone thinking its no big deal, and thats all it would take. A family lost their son. A congregation lost a dedicated servant. Friends are mourning. I hurt for them. And I know it could have just as easily been us. Please understand that 2 tons of metal at 20mph is capable of murder, let alone at 30mph.
