This photo was taken on a shark dive charter on the North Shore of Oahu. Before we booked, I made sure we went with an operation that doesnt bait or chum the water for sharks. That may have decreased our chances of having an interaction with them, but seeing them in their natural state was healthier and safer for our group and the animals. Baiting the water not only disrupts the animals eating patterns/sources, but it also associates humans with food - both having major downstream effects our ecosystem and our relationship with sharks. If you want to have an inwater interaction with sharks with one of these businesses, I highly recommend it. Today I thought Iโd bring attention to the life cycle of a blue crab! Scroll to see pictures! 1. Mature blue crabs mate throughout the summer. The pregnant female will move to a high salinity near-shore location to spend the winter. They will spawn (release eggs) between May-August into a โspongeโ attached to their abdomen until the larvae escape. 2. The first stage of crab larvae (free floating, destined by currents) are called Zoeae! They resemble curled crawfish, filter feed on phytoplankton and typically drift out to sea during this ~35 day period. They will molt (shed their shell to continue growing) 4-7 times during this period. 3. Once theyโve reached the ripe size of 1mm, they enter post-larvae development: Megalops. They develop claws and pointed joints, and can now swim freely! Winds whip these youngsters to northern water and norโeasters bring them back into a bay (generally the Chesapeake or Delaware). This stage lasts about 6-20 days. 4. Finally they become โJuvenilesโ or โfirst crabsโ with a 2.5mm carapace. They move inland to less saline waters, and depend on the cover of submerged vegetation as they grow and molt another 9-10 times. 5. The following spring juveniles reach adulthood! Woohoo! They do not reach sexual maturity until 1 to 1 and a 1/2 years old. #DYK, while red abalone (Haliotis rufescens) used to be abundant along the California coast between Mendocino County and San Luis Obispo, they are now a more rare sighting, experts believe as a result of over harvesting. Abalone are characterized by their strong muscular foot and large shell, with their ability to suction onto rocks as their main defense against predators. Once they have clamped down, itโs difficult to move them. They are capable of moving around along the seafloor but tend to remain in the same small area for their entire lives! As a result of this sedentary lifestyle, they can easily become covered with marine growths and serve as refuge for other small creatures like algae, sponges, barnacle, bryozoan and hydroids. In fact, as many as 90 species of small gastropods have been found living on one shell! ๐ฎ ~~~ Since the recent collapse of kelp forest along the northern California coast, distributions of intertidal organisms in the area like abalone, sea stars, and sea urchins have changed dramatically. To help understand the worrisome changes occurring along our shoreline habitat, Greater Farallones Association is joining researchers at Multi-Agency Rocky Intertidal Network - MARINe (@marine_pacificrockyintertidal) to monitor several sites for abalone, sea urchins, and sea stars through our LiMPETS Monitoring program (@limpetsnews). One of the most genuine smiles youll ever see from me. This hike remains to be one of the hardest and most gruelling Ive ever completed. It was a 12 hour round hike in thigh deep mud, through rough jungle terrain and up a steep incline. I can still remember feeling the shoes rubbing against the blisters on my feet and the pure exhaustion from such a difficult hike in 38 degree heat! HEAVY SMOKING ๐ฌ #LungHealth These are the charcoaled lungs of a life-long heavy smoker! Have you ever wondered where the black or brown color comes from? When you inhale cigarette smoke, there are thousands of tiny carbon-based particles that are inhaled. As soon as you inhale a puff of cigarette smoke, your body is alerted to the fact that toxic particles have invaded. Inflammatory cells rush to the scene. One type of white blood cell called macrophages may be thought of as the garbage trucks of our immune systems. Macrophages essentially eat the nasty brown-black particles in cigarette smoke in a process called phagocytosis. Since these particles could be damaging even to garbage truck cells, they are walled off in tiny vesicles and stored as toxic waste. And there they sit. As more and more macrophages containing debris build up in the lungs and lymph nodes within the chest, the darker the lungs appear. Its important to state that not all black lungs are related to tobacco smoke. Other irritants that can be inhaled may cause this appearance as well, such as the black lung disease sometimes seen in coal miners. A 2018 large-scale study of more than 100,000 patients by the Harvard School of Public Health found that thoseย who chose to eat a healthy diet rich in vegetables; exercise at least 30 minutes a day; maintain a healthy body weight; limit their alcohol use; & chose not to smoke during adulthood, had an 82% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, a 65% lower chance of dying from cancer, and a 74% lower risk of dying from all causes during follow-up. This little parasite might not seem like a big deal. Its kind of cute at first. But it surprised scientists when they found it where it wasnt supposed to be. Orthione griffenis, a cough drop-sized crustacean native to Asia and Russia, has decimated mud shrimp populations in California and Washington over the past 30 years, causing the collapse of delicate mudflat ecosystems anchored by the shrimp. Researchers identified the intruder during a 2017 marine bioblitz organized by @hakaiinstitute and Smithsonian MarineGEO. These surveys can act as early warning systems for invasive species, said Gustav Paulay. โIf you catch them early enough, you have a chance to do something about it.โ Most scientists believed the parasitesโ expansion was exclusively mediated by human transport โ O. griffenis is thought to have first arrived in North America by traveling in shipsโ ballast water.
