This week at Starlight we were able to help little ones like Florence through tough moments in hospital with our Distraction Box and other vital play and distraction services. ⭐ “Due to Covid we didn’t have access to the play room at the hospital and the play team weren’t able to share any toys with us. Starlight gave us a toy bag to take away. August 12, 2000 Papa’s Ice Cream opened its doors for the first time. A lot has happened in these past 20 years and unfortunately due to the current situation we all are dealing with we don’t feel we can safely celebrate our 20th Anniversary the way we had intended to for our staffs safety, as well as the community. We promise next year (hopefully things will be back to normal) to make it up to all of you! About 20 years ago, Paul and Addie Silva decided to open a neighborhood ice cream parlor. After a rough opening year, they began to contemplate if they made the right decision but they didn’t give up and with each passing year, things would get a little better. As time went on, we noticed the same faces coming in daily or a few times a week. Though things haven’t always been easy, my parents successfully did what they set out to do, build a neighborhood ice cream parlor like the old days. You weren’t a stranger, you were someone here. They knew names, faces and orders before the person would walk in the door. They shared stories, smiles, laughter and even tears throughout the years. They were able to accomplish what they set out to do! Mom and Dad are still very much involved, just behind the scenes! 20 years later, with a lot of hard work and dedication on their parts, they turned a simple and fun thing to do during retirement into a neighborhood landmark. Thank you Mom and Dad for deciding to open your doors and hearts to the community! Of course, what would a business be without all of our amazing customers! We know how lucky we are to have the love and support the community has given us! Papa’s would not be able to stay open for 20 years if it were not for all of you! Day 3 of Back to Basic week Lets see what we have here today, Dal Bati 😋 (Whole wheat and semolina yeast free hard crust bread rolls, with mixed lentil soup) Recipe for Bati - 1. Whole wheat four - 4 cups 2. Semolina (rava) - 1 cup 3. Clarified butter (Ghee) - 1 cup 4. Carrom seeds (Ajewin) - 1 tsp 5. Cumin seeds (jeera)- 1tsp 6. Salt- TT 7. Water- 1 cup - 1 1/2 cup 8. Coriander copped - 1 tbsp 9. Baking soda- 1tsp Method- 1. Combine all ingredients together and make a crumbly hard dough. 2. Make balls out of the mixture, with above quantities you can me 10-12 balls 3. Bake at 350 degrees centigrade for 20 mins turn the rolls and bake for another 10-15mins 4. 🔹👩‍❤️‍👩 2 year anniversary of getting married: to Me, Myself and I 👩‍❤️‍👩🔹 2018-2020, yo 💖 And I feel like taking a moment to reflect and give appreciation to this path of messy-magic self-love I have been on with myself: pretty much ever since I was consciousness that I have a self worth loving (however many lifetimes ago that was...) In this lifetime, Ive been married and entangled a few significant times before, including a 13-year old Marriage (12 years of which were semi-heaven, 1 of which was pure-hell), and the past 7 years Ive been in a VERY deep process of rebuilding my life from the ashes of my past-identity and life...Even though it was excruciatingly painful and exhausting at times (to say the very least!), I now know that this pain was an initiation into REAL LIFE and REAL LOVE: Love that starts and ends with the Love in my eternal-soul, a Life that contains the wholeness of the fragile-human-experience & mystery...and Ive been learning the dance of these 2 devoted lovers through many glorious mistakes and countless sacred messes this past 7-year-cycle. Real LIFE & LOVE is messy AF! But its the way, and its a path worth stumbling in the dark for, no matter the bruises and confusion: I am now incredibly grateful that I can SAY THAT I AM GRATEFUL for all that my soul chose to experience. Life was always on my side. Im starting to realize (and accept) that Its just part of nature that Life also asks us to Die from time to time: usually quite unpleasant (to say the very least), but Life holds an intelligence in the fabric of its mystery & divinity that is waaaaaay bigger than lil ol me. On September 3 we said goodbye to #NannuAlfred, my grandfather and the centre of our family. He and my grandmother, Nanna Maria, emigrated to Canada from Malta on December 24, 1981. Nannu was always there for us, flying to Toronto from Vancouver every Christmas making sure all of us could be together. Everyone slept at my dads house. It was an absolute zoo. And I loved it. We played cards, ping pong and foosball. We ate, we drank. He was a cerebral man and loved talking about the global politics of his time. As Nannu got older, he longed to live in Malta again. And I had the privilege of living with him every winter while I attended school at the University of Malta. He was the centre of my world at that time and I cherish those years. Gonna try a different approach... --- This is my grandmother. She survived the *actual* Nazis. . On the evening of Kristallnacht (Google it, if you dont know what that was) she hid at a neighbors, whilst Nazi gangs smashed up her familys clothing store and broke into their apartment out the back looking for Jews to kill in the streets. Inexplicably, they somehow made it out of Germany and arrived in Australia with not much more than the shirts on their backs. . They managed to rebuild a life, minus nearly the entirety of their extended family. . Because of this experience, she had to become a tougher and stronger person than any of us ever will be. Ever. . And despite being this incredibly tough, you can clearly see here that she is wearing a mask. So, if it isnt too much for a woman this strong and tough to wear a mask, then you too can wear a mask. It’s been a month since my brave, extremely intelligent, funny, uniquely complex California Mom, Jan Daugherty passed from a Covid-stroke. We spent her last five days together through a 4” opening in a little window b/c I haven’t sat with her since March 5th when they closed her nursing home. The incredible staff there would wheel her bed to the window so I could come and go all day to tell her stories about her life, our life, what’s happening in the world and play her favorite music...Brahms and The Paul Winter Consort. It was five Daze like no other. A Living Wake. A chance to make amends, a chance to work out long held grievances, a chance to realize I have a lot more to do in my life.... most of all tho...a chance to tell her it was okay to let go. Unconditional Love was never in question, although I learned my mothering skills elsewhere. That may sound harsh ... my Mom was an amazing human who helped an uncountable number of people all over the world. I am the product of a long line of strong white women of privilege. Mom fought her whole life for Civil Rights and Women’s Rights. As a SWW in Puerto Rico and East Harlem in the 1950’s, Urban Ministry Projects and protests through Perry Projects in Buffalo NY, battered Women’s shelters and alternative education in Ithaca NY and starting Santa Cruz CA first Hospice. Mom’s Great Grandma Rebecca Buffum Spring (1811-1911)was also a bad ass and I’m certain it’s where we all get it from. She was an ardent Abolitionist, feminist and suffragette, with unusual complete support from her husband who apparently marched and worked with her. Together they established a Underground Railroad station in southern New Jersey at Eagleswood, a Quaker communal living establishment in Perth Amboy. Besides standing up for what’s right, marching in protests I have been sitting on my privileged white ass... until now. I am on a mission to learn and change, get my message down and to be more of an activist. I have some Huge shoes to fill. Tra le più alte espressioni dell’artigianato della nostra Isola, il processo di produzione della seta di Orgosolo è probabilmente quella più singolare ed affascinante. La produzione della seta ad Orgosolo, appartiene dunque al patrimonio storico e culturale del paese ormai da numerosi secoli ed è da sempre stata finalizzata alla tessitura de “su lionzu”, la benda del costume tradizionale, tessuta con della seta grezza prodotta e lavorata da alcune esperte donne del paese. Lallevamento dei bachi da seta ha solitamente inizio ai primi di maggio, in coincidenza con il germogliare degli alberi di gelso; dopodiché “su semene” viene tenuto per un intero anno in un ambiente fresco, per evitare che le uova si schiudano e finché le foglie di gelso non iniziano a germogliare. Secondo la tradizione la schiusa del seme avvenne per la prima volta il 25 di aprile, in concomitanza con la festa di San Marco; in tale occasione le donne del paese si sarebbero recate in processione dalla Chiesa di San Pietro fino alla chiesa campestre di San Marco, tenendo nel seno un involucro di cotone contenente il seme. Lallevamento del baco da seta ad Orgosolo presenta inoltre alcuni aspetti originali: innanzitutto la colorazione gialla del filo di seta che la differenzia dalle produzioni realizzate a livello industriale, nelle quali si è da sempre scelto, per motivi economici, di produrre seta bianca, a causa della sua maggiore facilità a colorarla. Il giallo di Orgosolo è legato al tipico colore intenso de “su lionzu”, tinteggiato con lo zafferano locale; un’altra particolarità è data invece dal fatto che il baco da seta allevato ad Orgosolo non ha subito in questi secoli incroci con altre razze, facendo sì che nel tempo si sia selezionata una vera e propria specie riconosciuta oggi come razza Orgosolo. Si può assistere al processo che porta alla creazione del prezioso copricapo nel centro di Orgosolo, nel laboratorio Tramas de Seda di Maria Corda, discendente di una famiglia che porta avanti la tradizione da più di 200 anni. Eulalia is 97 years old and lives in Dallas, Texas. She loves to cook tortillas, enchiladas and especially tamales. But for the past seven months she’s been in a wheelchair, making her unable to walk or cook on her own. Per la ricetta mi sono ispirata a quella del tiramisù alle fragole di @fattoincasadabenedetta , ho però fatto la sua versione gluten free ai frutti di bosco, con qualche zucchero in meno per esigenze del diabete di mamma. I called my mom last week thinking it was Mother’s Day because I live in a country that celebrates it 2 months earlier and I got confused. Here we are making enchiladas with Nana in her kitchen. Much of my childhood was spent in this kitchen planning menus, sorting groceries and cooking feasts for our family. Sognando torte di mele, vi passo la mia ultima, che ha un passaggio in più, ma mi ha molto soddisfatto. The lockdown has given us many lessons. My grandparents who i have never had the opportunity to stay with stayed back with us over at Salt Lake. They stay in Shodpur and my dadu is too attached to his patients to stay in Salt lake for more than 10 days. I stay in Rajarhat and see them once a month over a meal at any restaurant dadu wants to go to . 4 months have passed in this lockdown and life has settled into this new pattern. One of the best things that has come out is this. She boils the milk for an hour at 9:00 pm sharp she stirs in some curd in a aluminium bowl and pours in the milk . She gets up at 12:30 am to put in the fridge otherwise she says an acrid taste forms in the curd. Every afternoon there is a bowl of perfectly set curd with a shine. P:S : My popo (maternal grandfather) made curd for us when we were small and now cosmically my grandmother ( paternal) has taken upon this duty.
