It’s a great day to save lives! 💜 Today, our tails are wagging a little harder because after 158 days at SAPA! Kimber found her fur-ever! Kimber’s sweet brown eyes could easily melt your heart, but not everybody was her cup of tea. This dog was having a hard time socializing and getting along with her other furry friends. Being a very confident dog, she had trouble playing with more submissive dogs, and she seemed scared of people. However, when behavioral specialist, Rebel K9 Academy, evaluated her, things were looking up for Kimber. Soon enough, she was able to get out of the kennels and into a foster home. Her social skills were improving, and during her stay, her foster family started falling in love with Kimber and just couldn’t let her go. Her exultations and exclamations in sweet sighs over multicolored note cards and fluorescent highlighters . The ritual of selecting and rejecting punctuated with passionate revisions of decisions. A lingering toying and fondling as we approached the checkout line and the closing psalm: “Oh Mom!-This is essential Seriously !” The first time I went to Staples after Marina died I shocked myself as I burst into wracking sobs. Her work has been exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami (Untitled Art Fair), and Venice, Italy (Venice Biennale), as well as in Chicago and throughout the Midwest. I don’t remember previously hearing about #nationaldaughtersday but apparently it’s celebrated this weekend. I wrote about not being able to see my mother for the Globe and Mail. This week has been lovely and intense with the book in the world and more and more I feel how powerfully I want my mother to be seen and known. I am not a perfect daughter, no one is, but I feel especially far from any possible ideal. Our relationship was, like all intimate relationships, complex and filled with contradictions. My mother did not want me to tell her story. I am compelled to tell her story. That has been complicated, but what is not complicated is my love for my mother; like my love for my son, it is overwhelming in its simplicity. I love my mother and telling stories is the best way I know how to love her. It is the best tool I’ve got to fight the pressures of erasure. I need to see my mother, and part of this act of witness, of recovery, is to invite you to see her too.
