Ross Gay’s poem “A Small Needful Fact” relates to the subject of Eric Garner’s death by the New York City police. By sharing with the reader that Garner worked for some time in the Horticultural Department at Parks and Recreation -a small and necessary fact- the poet opens us up to the possibility “perhaps, that with his very large hands, perhaps, in all likelihood, he put gently into the earth some plants” which grow, provide shelter, beautify, convert sunlight, and make it “easier for us to breathe.” Gay’s poem both questions our knowledge of real world facts and leads us to imagine other possibilities. Today’s post comes from our group member @oldmauserman For those of you who have fired a P08 Luger, you know that satisfying feeling of a surprisingly-smooth action and the knowledge that you are using a piece of history. The Luger served the German armed forces well in the first four decades of the twentieth century. The Luger was, quite simply, a work of mechanical art. Beyond its rather intricate design, the Luger has to be hand-fitted to ensure proper operation, and it was quite costly—in time and resources—to produce. As it geared up for World War II, Germany sought a replacement for the venerable Luger. In 1938, Walther GmbH submitted a design for what would become the P-38. After a few modifications, the Army accepted the design, and Walther produced prototypes in 1939. Mass production began in earnest in 1940, just before the invasion of France. Besides being more economical to produce, the P38 had several features that represented improvements over most other sidearms of its time. Using a double-action/single-action trigger, coupled with a safety lever that allowed safe decocking, the pistol could be safely carried with a round in the chamber. Moving the safety lever to firing position immediately put the pistol into double-action mode without needing to pull the slide. A pull of the trigger would discharge the chambered round, load the next round, and cock the pistol for single-action operation. These features made the P38 the first truly modern pistol, and many sidearms of today are simply improvements on the basic P38 features. The P38 soldiered throughout World War II and beyond. When arming the Bundeswehr in the 1950s, Germany turned to the P38 (later redesignated P1), and these trusty sidearms remained in service until 2004. - @the_firearm_history_community on Instagram

One man died and another was being detained by police following a stabbing in the parking lot of a CVS pharmacy in Pasadena on Friday night, authorities said. The killing took place about 8:15 p.m. outside the business at 20 E. Orange Grove Blvd., according to Pasadena police Lt. Carolyn Gordon. Both victim and suspect were initially described only as men, she said. No further details were available as the investigation remained in its early stages. Today marks the release of the final work in our current project, In the open’. This latest release is a second work by Luke Fowler, entitled ‘A walk through a different city’ - a companion to his earlier The Pitches. Together they form a sound portrait of the city under lockdown. Link in bio. • Luke Fowler’s second acoustic work for ‘In the open’ is a sound portrait of Glasgow’s urban core, emptied out of human presence during the months of lockdown earlier this year. Edited from over 500 hours of audio recordings, ‘A walk through a different city’ traces a sonic journey that begins at the top of Sauchiehall Street, winds through alleyways and lanes, past hotels and empty car parks before taking in Buchanan Street – the heart of Glasgow’s commercial shopping district – heading south through a deserted Central Station, and concluding under the Kingston Bridge, by the River Clyde. • ‘A walk through a different city’ frames the city’s acoustic environment at the height of the pandemic, defamiliarized through the absence of crowds. This radically altered ambience allows us to tune into a broader and more nuanced soundscape to the one we are accustomed to. With the shoppers, buskers and traffic gone, Fowler’s microphones instead amplify impressions from a transformed acoustic environment; extractor fans, electricity boxes and triggered alarms systems polarise our sonic experience. A vibrating undercurrent to the ordinary ambience of the city, the drones, rumbles and fluctuating tones at times take on a meditative, almost harmonic quality, whilst at others feel abrasive and disquieting. • The social sounds we do hear punctuate our perceptual field – snatches of overheard conversation, the sound of floors being mopped and bins being jet-washed, construction work being hastily erected and tannoy announcements being made. Reaching for a community-led organization available for immediate response that didn’t exist. We see resources shared constantly but where do they go when we need them? We know the implications of calling the cops. Unlearning our relationships with the police and learning to deescalate in response requires energy of us. This delicate Anglo-Scandinavian, hood-shaped cap is made of plain-woven, hand-spun, undyed silk. It dates between 875 and 950 AD. It was imported to York from Iran by Viking traders, who connected the city with the rest of the Viking world. It is an amazing survival, preserved by York’s waterlogged soil. Many fragments of silk have been found during archaeological excavations in York. Archaeologists think that silk was brought over to England in large amounts then cut up to create clothing, headdresses and caps. By finding the silk archaeologists think that textiles were manufactured with spinning and weaving taking place. Silk caps would have been an exotic item, therefore would have only belonged to the wealthier citizens of York. The style of this cap is unusual and was previously unknown. In recent years, media interest in happiness has grown significantly, as has the number of people who practice meditation and yoga or work in the field of psychological and emotional support. Recently, three countries have adopted happiness for their citizens, alongside GDP, as a national goal: New Zealand, Scotland and Iceland. Externalization of feelings is no longer taboo, not even for men: recently, for the first time, Princes William and Harry spoke publicly about their grief over the death of their mother. While still representing a minorityy, this movement of opinion is growing rapidly. M: In his book you argue that such gentle culture has the potential to increase the “overall happiness” on the planet. Happiness is contagious. The Buddha said: One candle can light a hundred other candles and continue to burn just as brightly. M: What is the relationship between our happiness and that of others? They are intimately interconnected. Anne Frank wrote: He who is happy will make others happy too... How wonderful that no one needs to wait a single moment before starting to improve the world. We are social animals. We have a selfish part, which leads us to believe that we are the centre of the universe and that our needs come first; undoubtedly, this egoistic trait is fundamental for the survival of the species. But there is also an altruistic part in us, which allows us to feel what others feel and to fight for their good.
